This Saturday, HBO will have a live broadcast of one of the most highly anticipated middleweight fights of the year. Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins will be putting his undisputed middleweight title on the line against 2000 Olympic bronze medalist Jermaine “Bad Intentions” Taylor.
Hopkins is listed as a $1.60 favorite to win the fight at the MGM in Las Vegas. This, my friends, is a joke. The real number should be closer to Hopkins minus $5.00. The reasons appear below.
Taylor, ranked as the fifth best middleweight in the world, has basicaly been pampered and protected from his less than spectacular Olympic showing. As a true boxer/puncher, Taylor has become extremely effective when boxing stationary, exchamps, at long range.
Taylor fails to show any great inside effectiveness nor a spectacular defense. If he remains on the outside at long range, and does not engage Hopkins, he will have a good chance of going the distance. If he engages . . . then he will feel the same pain Oscar felt when he ate Hopkins’ fatal kidney shot.
Hopkins is a throwback, also a true boxer/puncher, he possesses the greatest overall offense and defense in the sport, with no obvious flaws . . . except his age. At 40 Hopkins is still in the same shape he was, if not better, than when he defeated Felix Trinidad. His years in prison as a young adult have preserved his body from the wear and tear of your average fighter his age. Look for Hopkins to silence his critics by throwing faster punches, hitting a bit harder than ussual and working his tremendous inside game.
While Taylor likes to throw the big punch from a distance, Hopkins likes to get deep inside and take his fight right to the other guys chest. Hopkins’ most powerful weapon is his six-inch left hook. It takes less than a quarter of a second for Hopkins to land it and it has nuetralized and even stopped almost all who get within its range. With a lack of real inside game, Taylor is a sitting duck.
Look for Hopkins to allow Taylor to fight his fight in the first round. Hopkins enjoys seeing what the other fighter brings to the table. In this case, the sacrificial lamb. Hopkins’ natural style of keeping his gloves up high and his chin down low, while closing in his opponent will prove to be extremely effective in countering Taylors long jabs.
As Taylor exposes his game plan, look for the tide to change dramactically as the fight progresses. Once Hopkins gets inside, it will be a matter of minutes before one of these three things happen : Bernard by KO, TKO, or the flying towel coming from Taylor’s corner.
In other words, the only way Taylor can win this fight is if it took place in the year 2007. He showed up for a legitimate title shot two years too early. Maybe Taylor should get a raincheck so he can learn a little more about boxing. Predction: Hopkins by TKO in 8
