Putting a few things into perspective: The Big 10 Conference, formerly know as the "Western Athletic Conference" when it was founded 120 years ago,
now stretches from the Atlantic Seaboard (Rutgers/Maryland) to the Eastern edges of Wyoming/Colorado (Nebraska). The "Big-10" with its long history of academic excellence and "winning" traditions in sports has allowed the Conference to become rich in tradition while they bask in the glory of past successes
and to some degree during the present....... Ohio State did win a National Football Championship (on the field last) last year.
Over the long-years, I've always felt the "Big 10" Conference has looked down in a condescending manor at the other conferences that existed 70 years ago
when I first began to follow Big-10 football, particularly (The SEC, the old Southwest Conference and even the Pacific Coast Conference at times ). I can remember when the University of Wisconsin (I was there on campus beginning in 1952) would NOT schedule games against those "Southern Schools" because they felt they weren't on the same academic level as the Big-10 schools.....(talk about intellectual arrogance). Some of this mind-set still lingers to this very day if you dig deep-enough into the alumni ranks and the faculties of these staid mid-western Land-Grant Colleges & Universities.
What makes me chuckle today is how the "Big-10" has come full-circle with their conference make-up when they "allowed" Nebraska, Rutgers, Maryland and Johns-Hopkins...(Lacrosse only) to play football in Columbus, Madison, Ann Arbor, Champagne, Bloomington (et al) on Saturday afternoons during the Fall of the year..........Suddenly, It's all about money, (TV money) isn't it. Don't get me wrong, a student athlete can still get what [he or she] wants academically at any one of the Big 10 schools but they can do that just as well in the schools of the other Conferences (The SEC, The Big 12, The Pac-10, the ACC).
So, what does all the above have to do with trying to determine which is the best football conference in America ? Nothing actually, now that the Big-10 schools are willing to play those "boys" from the South or the Southwest or the West Coast. The "best" (the champions) can be determined on the Gridiron on any given Saturday afternoon each year or in the play-offs....all the "perception" and a need to speculate has gone by the wayside today.
Me? I've been following college football for more than 70 years and loved every year of it.....It gets better each and every passing year.
Is the Big10 the best conference in college football this year ? Let the debate continue. Good luck during this years bowl season Guys.
