Hi Doug.....Is this the daughter that looks like me?? Anyways, you may have to be a bit more specific when you say "fail"....does it hesitate when she tries to start it? I had that problem with my car and it was the starter (who would have thought LOL)

No, Billsy not the one that looks like you. So Billsy, where are you and FH moving to ? Getting married ?

Apparently the car will suddenly die ( with very little warning) while being driven. She says the gas gauge will go down to empty ( even though it has gas), then die like 15 seconds later, not to cool if you are on the interstate.

It doesn't always do it, only on occasion, rain seems to make it more likely to occur.

Nissan dealer can't find the problem. I think the distributor cap is worth replacing... actually a complete tune-up. The car has not really been maintained especially well ( IMO). I'd bet that cap is original, probably plugs, rotor and wires too. So a full tuneup is probably in order.

I'm not sure how much money she should throw into a car that could probably be replaced with a better one for no more than 6k. I'd only rate the car as "Fair" as to overall condition. If I was buying it, I'd want to pay 3k or less.

It might be time to sell it ? It probably needs quite a few things, very possibly ..... timing belt, tires, brakes, shocks, tuneup, etc. It's starting to rust as well. It might really take well over 1k to get in in shape.

She doesn't really need a car payment, just bought a house. So I'm sort of suggesting a better used car for like 5-8k. I think she is going to see what Carmax offers... I'd guess $2500-3000. I think it might go for 4k privately.

ditto ditto,,,,,,,

bad points in cap and/or 1 bad spark plug wire.

a new cap wont cost 20.00 and if you unclick the clamps to the original cap, then CAREFULLY reclick on the new cap and CAREFULLY remove each sparkplug wire and reset it in its EXACT POSITION on the new cap.

that should do it and you could do the repair just as I stated doug,,, make sure you look at wires and make sure that they are not FRAYED or cracked, if so, then you need to do the above mentioned AND replace each wire one at a time from the engine block to cap, carefully removing and replaceing 1 at a time so as not to mix upa wire,, (new wires will cost 30ish)

tater

Thanks, Tate ! I've done that before, it's like nothing. Her BF will most likely do it, he's as able as I am to do it.

Nissan has had the back for over a week now. They made a diagnosis ( finally).

They are saying it needs a new alternator for $600

I know you can get the part for about $100.

I'm not so sure about it being the alternator, the car never needed a jump start. I have a feeling this may not fix it.

The part appears to be a pain to change out, from what I've read about it... tight spot, and it seems you have to take of the radiator fan, and some other stuff.

We had a 2002 Altima (no joke) as our last car.

Replacing an alternator on that car could not possibly take an equipped mechanic more than two hours.

Get the part and pay a legitimate non-dealer garage $150 or so bucks to do the labor.

Only reason not to would be if the car was under a factory-backed warranty, which it's obviously not.

I can get her an alternator online for like $135, shop rate of About $85 ( one hour), throw in a new belt... maybe $250 total.

I don't think that is the issue. Nissan is throwing smoke, IMO !

Nissan tried to charge her storage fees, she actually called the Police... no fees... no reliable car, either !

Basically a fucked up 2002 Nissan with only 115k, saleable to Carmax for 2k.

I don't know what to tell her.

I'd dump it, personally.

Something doesn't add up here.

Has anyone besides her taken to a shop? I trust these grease monkeys about as far as I can throw them when it comes to dealing with a chick customer.

It's one thing if some hack garage has trouble finding a problem, but these guys at the dealership have seen 99% of the issues with their cars over and over-especially a car a few years old. That makes me want to throw the incompetence potential out the window.

I think she's getting dicked around. Most of these cars today get plugged into a diag computer & it spits out the problem in minutes if not seconds.

Very valid points, Terry. I can't babysit the situation personally, she lives 40 +miles away from me.The girl (Laura) is not physically intimidating... she's like 4'11", maybe 125 lbs ( if that), about 25, looks 18. BF would have to intervene... he's like 300 lbs, looks tough !

Laura makes the money, she won't listen to me

, will likely buy something like an 2009 Civic for about 19k.

Add a $400+ car payment to her $1,600 + mortgage onto her bills, with her maybe 50k salary, I'm sure she will wind up doing it soon, I can't stop her.

Another foreclosure waiting to happen, should she get layed off or something. I can't bail her out !

She has too much debt now, IMO !

I want her to buy something like a 1999 Accord with 125k on it for like 5k. She will do what she wants to do.

I think she is over-utilizing her good credit, and can't afford a new car, doesn't even drive but to work ( 12-15 miles one way). I know she's stretching with the mortgage, already, and utility bills, etc.

The mortgage is huge in relation to her income.

I figure she ( Laura) , would need to work about four 4-hour shifts ,a week, to make this car payment,at like Dunkin Donuts.

I don't want to see her after that... ever again ! :nohead:

I'll move to Alabama, before I see that !
