EXACTLY!

It is the hope with this thread that at least it can save some people here some headaches down the road, if not cure mine.

You might want to contact SS anyway and see if they recommend a new SS#, that would be a hassle but would definitely stop everything right now. They just have to explain how they would transfer all previous earnings to your new number. My daughter gave her SS# out over the telephone to supposed Capital One, nothing has happened yet. Never give anything over the phone or email, period. Best of luck with your quest to clear this, Fish.

That sucks FISH, good luck getting it cleared up!

I was avoiding this thread all day because I thought IDENTITY came up with a new name for her Play of the Day.

PS- It is my own fault, as 5 months ago i foolishly feLL for a spam email requesting my SS#............STUPID, STUPID.
Sorry to hear about that FISH but your SS# could have just as easily leaked out anyway.

When I was living in the US over 30 years ago I could not believe that a SS# was needed to get a driver's licence for heaven's sake. In fact I had to apply for a SS#. This # is so incredibly insecure.

Since its so easy for criminals to get my vital stats from databases, including my passport number that I have to file with cruise lines, I feel my SSN (Canadian equivalent) is my only true security. Fortunately it's only used for taxation purposes so, apart from financial institutions, no-one can compel you to release this number.

If it's possible to change (reapply) for a SS# that might be your easiest recourse.

BTW Everyone who maintains online accounts should use different passwords at each site.

In Nevada I always declined to have my SSN on my drivers license. If I agreed to do it then it would be extremely easy to get my SSN and address. Do other states do this? I don't know does Nevada still do this?

Yes, Missouri does it also. Who the heck would want their SSN on the front of their DL for all the world to see, not to mention your name and address staring you right in the face?:icon_conf Ican't believe they even offer this option.

Some idiots print it on their checks. I shred everything, and don't give out number, unless mandatory. No problems... yet.

Wild Bill, this was in Illinois. The SS# was not on my driver's licence but was required to apply for a driver's license.

In Nevada we have to show a SS card to get a license. The default back in 1999 was to put your number on the license, you had to check off a box to tell them you didn't want to. I was thinking maybe with all the fraud that has cropped up since then they would have stopped doing that, but I could be wrong. Needless to say your SSN number and address aren't really that hard to come by. I am sure if one looked out on the Net there are people more than willing to sell you lots of lists with this info on thousands of people.

Sorry to hear this news. This is a major problem going on in the U.S. now that most people do not take serious until it happens to them. The advice so far has been good. Make sure you have this reported on all three credit reporting agencies. Most important is to keep a copy of the police report with you and in your car at all times. Also i have a packet of everything you need to do which i will send to you. You will find it very helpful. Just send me your address and social security number and i will get it to you as soon as possible.

Yes, that was my point. What does the administration of driving licenses have to do with Social Security?

In Canada, if you are careful to protect your SIN (social insurance number), it is maintained in databases of financial institutions and those in government for taxation and pensions only.

Fish you are joking right? You thought ebay needed your SS# ??

Like I have told you before you should watch what you say on the forums. The more posts you write like the ones above the quicker everyone else figures your game out.

At least you aren't claiming that your nephew maxed out all of your credit accounts while you were on a weekend bender at the casino.

That still has to be the biggest crock of **** that I've EVER seen a bunch of people believe.
