Been to both many times - Cancun absolutely sucks - it's an American strip mall - all generic chain stores and restaurants - 30 mins away is Playa del Carmen which is very nice - Cabo San Lucas is also very nice

I wouldn't get near any part of Mexico, screw that.......with the kidnappings, etc.......try Europe, the Carribean islands, or Vegas ......try Costa Rica also.

If you get one of the condos with the big roof area with the hot tub - for 200USD the wait staff will come up and do a Mexican bbq on your roof. So much food.

Went with 2 young kids, fisher price sponsors their kids zone, the wife and I could relax.

Took a ton of sushi to go, kids loved the smoothie store too.

We are going back ASAP.

Another little destination I like is San Carlos..200 miles or so down Pacific side..alot of nice beaches..a little more mellow compared to the tourist traps

Ive read these Mexican resort towns are fairly safe. But it's Mexico, so...

Went to playa del Carmen last year and stayed on resort the entire time with no issues

I have always felt that if you stay in resort areas you really aren't in Mexico..Pretty much the same as a US resort on the beach..

I was pretty far down the beach from downtown Cancun. We took a cab into the town, and yes, it was full of strip malls.
But the rest of the week was beach, hotel, pool, bar. Loved it.
