Academics do matter to some. Doesn't sound like cheating to me.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Walker, probably a lock to make the 12-member team considering he was the MVP at last year's FIBA Americas 18-U championship in Argentina, said coach Jim Calhoun has suggested he might be better served by remaining in Storrs for summer session classes.
Walker said he loved the Argentina experience, that he benefitted from it as a player and person, but also that it's very important to bolster his academic standing heading into his sophomore year. He appears fine with either scenario.
"Whatever Coach suggests," Walker said. Walker and Calhoun will continue to talk about the situation in the coming weeks.

With all due respect, I am very familiar with Roy and Jamie. If you think Carolina and Pitt are not matching Louisville and Kentucky, you are very naieve. I think no less of these guys, because of what they are forced to do...just like every other D-1 Head and assistant coach. If you are not bending rules, you will not last. The NCAA would need one investigator per school, to make everything somewhat controllable & legit, according to the manual. Many of these collegiate athletes are taking a paycut, when they go Pro. Guys like OJ Mayo just don't show up on your doorstep and say I want to go to USC, with no prior contact in recruiting.

Why did you start this response like you were going to offend me and why would OJ Mayo be lumped in here in the same sentence as Roy Williams and Jamie Dixon?

I don't know what Roy Williams does or doesn't do. I don't know what Jamie Dixon does or doesn't do but what I do know is they win, they coach and their players love them. I'm not going to speculate on what they do or don't do but I can tell you guys like R. Williams have been doing this a very long time and I'd think at some point if he was crooked the truth would come out right?

Like it or not, every coach cheats. It isn't even cheating anymore. Some kids won't even allow you to see them without money up front.

This joke that is considered college sports only exists as a way for Universities to collect money. They are minor-league farm systems for pro teams. Why does it matter if Derrick Rose goes to class, it is a joke. If he were an actor or musician, nobody would give a damn. However, these idiots act like if Rose attends class for half a semster, he is going to change the world.

I guarantee Derrick Rose didn't even attend 20 classes at Memphis.

My reference to OJ Mayo was the 6th sentence in the paragraph. The discussion was about college recruiting and coaches who do & don't cheat. Since you are from Seattle, a Pac 10 city, I assumed you were aware of the latest news re: Tim Floyd, cash in envelopes, agents, and OJ's arrival. Seemed like another appropriate and poignant connection to the topic. Floyd was quoted very early in the process, that he did not know who OJ Mayo was. One of the top players in the nation was unknown to the head coach at USC. This player unrecruited by the Trojans, starts recruiting contacts and eventually delivers himself to the USC basketball program. Happens every day in the highly competitive world of college recruitment. LOL He was already recruited heavily by many top programs. The point being; Top 100 recruits expect and get extra benefits. They have been pimped since elementary school. It's the culture of their upbringing. Are they going to a school that won't take care of them? It's just part of the biz. The fact that you don't know Roy or Jamie is understood. Your speculation that "they do it the right way" is just an opinion and based on their winning teams and their players loving them??? You are oblivious to the many skeletons in the closet. And because you want to be offended, I hope that makes you feel better.

They are basketball players not fucking scholars with earth shattering opinions let them play the game and fuck off with the academics you hypocritic bitches

hehehehehe

let that player you speak of go to Europe if he doesn't want to attend classes.

The vast majority of D-1 players will need their degrees to survive, as in almost all of them.

Once the door is closed on the Squid & WWWW, Europe will be that player's only option.

They are close. Huggins has a perfect record of no basketball players ever to graduate, while Calipari will have two Final Four teams wiped off the record.

They can - overseas. They should be nowhere near a college campus. Too bad the NBA just doesn't agree to have a minor league system, and free up scholarships to deserving students.

Absolutely true, but if they take shortcuts in the classroom, they probably take shortcuts when it comes to basketball. Kobe didn't go to college, but he speaks several languages, and while he may be an asshole, you know he works hard at his game.
LeBron is intelligent, even though he didn't go to college.
Then you have a guy like Lamar Odom, who sounds like he just came out of a 15-round fight with Frazier, which gives you a hint why he is so inconsistent.
Derrick Rose is a helluva talent, but I will bet he'll never reach his full potential. He probably skips workouts because his talent will carry him through.

id argue that the athletes are pretty much on the same level as the students at the majority of colleges nationwide, except the upper tier schools like a stanford, duke, etc.

any idiot can graduate from college these days. almost every state school is a degree paper mill where they hand them out to anyone.

But Tim Floyd and OJ Mayo have zero to do with the three coaches I mentioned. Absolutely 100% nothing so I found it odd that you'd pick the bad example of the week and lump it in to our discussion about those 3 specific coaches. I, quite frankly, don't give a shit about OJ Mayo and never did.

You're right, I don't know R. Williams and Jamie Dixon. I don't go drink beer with them or play poker on a Friday night with them. You are making a lot of assertions about these coaches with zero information to back up your claims. Maybe they do cheat and maybe they don't but I don't know. I do know they haven't been caught so then I presume until proven otherwise they run a clean program.

I heard a stat on the Chicago radio Thursday. The top three scorers from the final four NBA teams had 11 years of college. Obviously the players don't want to be in college. Greed ruined the college game 20 years ago. They can play overseas for a year or two. If they are good enough, they will be in the NBA. If not, they can go to college, on their dime, like I did. Welcome to the real world.

Battier went to the same HS as Chris Webber, a college prep school. Unlike Webber, he didn't take handouts in college from a bookie.

Most power conferences, yes.

With all the opportunities kids have, sadly they don't.
