Microsoft has announced that the Xbox 360 exclusive game 'Halo 3' has officially become the biggest entertainment launch in history, garnering an estimated $170 million in sales in the United States alone in the first 24 hours. The Xbox 360 title beat previous records set by blockbuster theatrical releases like "Spider-man 3" and novels such as "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."
'Halo 3' is the conclusion to the epic trilogy and picks up where 'Halo 2' left off, answering questions around the fates of the beloved protagonist Master Chief and his artificial intelligence sidekick Cortana as they struggle to save humankind from destruction at the hands of the alien coalition known as the Covenant. In addition to the rich storyline, 'Halo 3' continues the franchise's tradition of delivering innovative online multiplayer experiences via Xbox LIVE, the world's largest social network on TV.
'Halo 3' has become a pop-culture phenomenon,' said Shane Kim, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios. "Not only is 'Halo 3' setting sales records, it's also redefining entertainment."
Within the first 20 hours alone, we've seen more than a million Xbox LIVE members come online to play Halo 3 - that makes September 25 the most active Xbox LIVE gaming day in history."
Retailers have also expressed their excitement about the launch of 'Halo 3.'
Bob McKenzie, Senior Vice President of Merchandising for GameStop Corp commented that, "With consumer demand for Halo 3 and related products, we expect it to be the biggest video game title generator in GameStop's history."
"The initial demand we've seen for 'Halo 3' has been astounding, and the game is on track to become the number one gaming title of all time. 'Halo 3' is a genuine entertainment phenomenon and our customers have responded very enthusiastically to the release," said Jill Hamburger, vice president of movies and games at Best Buy.
More than 10,000 retailers hosted Midnight Madness events to celebrate the launch of this third installment in the billion-dollar franchise. In New York, Seattle, Miami and Los Angeles, Microsoft and retail partners hosted marquee launch events that featured contests and appearances by local celebrities.
More than 1.7 million copies of 'Halo 3' were preordered in the United States before a single store opened its doors at midnight, Sept. 25, making this the fasting pre-selling game in history, surpassing the previous record-setting pre-sales of 'Halo 2.'

I played it at a friend's and the the game is a bust to me. We didn't finish it, but we've read that the campaign lasts only 10 hours, pretty unimpressive compared to hl2 or doom 3's 30+ hour story. Online gaming got boring pretty quickly because they got rid of the custom servers. Seems like they rake in more dough and they produce less of a product.
If they re-released the first game with xbox live online gameplay, it would be the new crack. But, we're stuck with this one.

graphics-wise the game is amazing, but gears of war still tops it. Gears was also a short game though, and had terrible multiplayer. So, your best bet in the end is halo 3 still for xbox live.
I tell you what, if Bungie releases the old maps from Halo 1 and 2 then the multiplayer will be amazing, but these new maps aren't cutting it.

You know what part of gears I was stuck on for so long is when you come out of the building and there is a beat up car there that you have to push and you have to shoot open the canisters to keep the birds away and also all those stupid guys in the building.
Eventually I just got fed up and rushed the building and shot them all up. That strategy seemed to work! But then you go to advance and if you dont see and shoot open a canister, you get killed by the birds or whatever those things are.
Then it kind of gets easy again, you switch on the lights etc. Just that part had me ready to rip my hair out.
I'm not much of a FPS fan. This summer I did play the single player of Halo 1 and 2 and thought they were ok. I will probably pickup Halo 3 in about 2 years when I can get a used copy for 10 bucks or so.
I will be picking up the game called "Mass Effect" when it's released in November. From what I've seen this rpg game looks amazing. It's being made by a company called Bioware which has a nice track record of putting out solid games like Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire.

I just beat Halo 3
decent ending... but I beat it on easy... so I basically walked through it... towards the end I kept an energy sword (always) and either a shotgun or spiker... alot of 1 shot kills to save time
Excellent game.... the campaign is so damn short. Micro$oft obviously wants you to get off campaign and pay $50 to play xbox live. Their plan worked on me loool... Ill be on xbox live in the next few days, I just gotta make a long ass cat5 cable and im out of rj45's.
