Cities, like Toledo, are flooded with guns and yet the Republican supermajority in the Ohio House is preparing to pass a crazy, constitutionally dubious barrier to enforcement of federal firearms laws.
House Republicans will protect gun rights ahead of crime victims in opposition to police and prosecutors. ( “Bill to block federal gun restrictions,” Friday. )
The Second Amendment Preservation Act passed out of the House Government Oversight Committee on a straight party line vote. Speaker Jason Stephens (R., Kitts Hill) promises to bring gun-sanctuary legislation to the full House before the end of the year.
Absolutist Ohio gun rights organizations applaud the proposed law that would ban police from cooperating with federal law enforcement on gun laws or enforcing federal provisions. House Bill 51 creates a fine of $50,000 against state or local agencies that violate the gun sanctuary law.

“This is a straightforward bill that will ensure Ohioans’ Second Amendment rights are not infringed upon,” said principal sponsor Rep. Jean Schmidt (R., Loveland). House Republicans are so convinced gun rights need further protection they plan to pass House Bill 51 as an emergency so it takes immediate effect.
Ohio police and prosecutors have lined up in opposition to the gun-protection legislation, claiming prohibition from cooperation with federal officials will keep them from accessing gun crime databases that often lead to arrests and convictions.
In the long run, this entire debate is just political posturing. But until the opponents can get a case in front of a federal court where state lawmakers will get a lesson on the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution, House Bill 51 can do real damage.
As the Ohio Legislative Service Commission analysis of the Second Amendment Protection Act makes clear, the Supremacy Clause specifies that the U.S. Constitution and federal laws take precedence over state laws and constitutions.
It’s revelatory of Ohio Republican radicalism that the U.S. Constitution is little more than a speed bump in the quest to eliminate any and all restrictions on gun rights.
Sylvania Township state Rep. Josh Williams should talk some sense into his Republican colleagues based on his experience in Lucas County courtrooms.
Mr. Williams blamed the ease of obtaining guns and soft punishment for juveniles charged with illegal possession of a firearm for the murder of 17-year-old Antwan Walker.
Mr. Williams represented Tavion Price, the 17-year-old assailant who pleaded guilty to the murder and faces a sentence of life in prison.
According to Mr. Williams, testimony would have shown one of the guns in the juveniles’ possession was supplied by an adult. Mr. Williams advocates more aggressive prosecution and harsher penalties for adults who make guns available to juveniles.
Prohibiting enforcement of federal gun laws and even cooperation in federal gun investigations is more than a constitutional abomination; it defies common sense as Representative Williams is uniquely able to attest.

You can have all these restrictions on gun owners, and yet they follow the law, but your gang bangers don't, and yet you want to blame the legal gun owners instead of the criminals the problem isn't with the legal gun owners it's the criminals and just because a city passes new gun restrictions is not going to solve the problem. You have to lock up the criminals and teach young kids about guns, and the NRA has a program that teaches young kids who happen to find a gun how to safely handle the gun safely. But you have to enforce the laws already on the books and lock up the criminals
