Three dudes check into a $25 motel room, but the clerk overcharges them and gets $30 by taking $10 from each of them.

Later, he feels partially guilty so he goes to their room and gives them each back a dollar, while keeping two for himself.

The three dudes thus paid $9 each and the hotel clerk has $2. Where's the missing dollar?

2-27 =25

The statement "keeping $2 for himself" is what throws one off. It is not a true statement.

as I posted once, it doesn't work as it is on here as you can see the 10 is the last number. At a bar if it is covered up and the person is in a quick rythym and cannot see that the 10 is the last number that is where they get tricked. It is true and Ice is correct. I am very good at math also, like Ice and I fell for it too as has about everyone I have ever done it to.

Thanks Barman, talk about ask and ye shall receive. Years ago the neighborhood geek said that it was 'semantics' and 2 theorums applied to the same occurence or something like that. None of us bought it being that we were stoned out of our heads and couldn't grasp what he was saying.

Exactly. I have only seen this covered up and done on paper and all but once (over 100 times) has everyone got it wrong. Has something to do with the paper covering it up and the last one.

Someone try it on another like I wrote it and report back.

what happens here is that the guys were overcharged 66.6 cents each and that adds up to the $2 the clerk over charged after he gives them back the dollar each, originally he over charged each guy $1.66

amount paid for room= $27
