truest hebrew translation

that was what King James set out to do in his scrap with the Vatican

Got it thanks...but really the hardest part is how word meanings change over time.

Like when you met the Flintstones and you had a Gay old time back in the 50s/60s it meant something different than going to the west village and having a Gay old time in 2008 and that's only 50 years.

I'm not bewildered by the Bible, I'm bewildered by all the people who still seem to believe that it speaks some eternal truth.

It's a good book, but people have gotten carried away with it. There's a lot of good books that are not worshipped.

It really helps a society to have a common sense of what is right and what is wrong. The Bible provided that common sense since the founding of this country.

As secularism has gained strength in this country, our National sense of right and wrong has become diluted to the point where homosexuality, amongst other things, is no longer considered "wrong" by many.

The Bible tied us together. Secularism is tearing us apart.

Have you actually read the Old Testament? Common sense right and wrong? Hilarious.

Maybe you should write the new Bible D2.

I really don't care what it is I just care that we all share the same views of right and wrong.

What's hilarious is that you fail to understand how important that is to any strong society.

Way I see it is the Bible worked for thousands of years. But you secularists who don't believe in God want to rewrite the rules.

Good luck. While you dawdle we fall apart as a society.

By the way, I didn't say "common sense right and wrong".

I said a common sense of right and wrong.

Vastly different.

Slavery, subordination of women, honor killings, etc. all worked for thousands of years. You wanna go back? Personally I think society has gotten stronger and more prosperous over the last 100 years as we've gotten farther away from such primitive "faith".

We don't follow the rules in the Bible. We pick and choose. Proof that there is something else which guides right and wrong independent from the bible or religion.

Given your attitudes, surely you realize the irony in your choice of poster name?

You continue to dance around my point.

We, as a society, need agreement as to what is right and what is wrong.

The Bible was the basis for that agreement. It worked. We were strong as a people and as a country.

But somewhere things began to change. Certainly not 100 years ago. I would say about 40 years ago. And I think the country has been declining ever since.

So rewrite the rules but make it fast. A society that redefines right and wrong can only do so by dividing the society. You're doing a good job. Just look at this board. It is not healthy when members of the same society have such strongly differing views of the society of which they are all a part.

We are always evolving in societal norms. How pathetic and awful it would have been if we'd have stayed stagnant. Progress is not a bad word. Progress has come as we have tossed aside more and more bullshit from the bible and the past. The country is a better place now than it was 40 years ago. And it will likely be better and more secular 40 years from now and 40 years after that. The fundamentalists and jihadists will lose.

Way I see it is the Bible worked for thousands of years.

The Holy Bible as we know it today has only been used by maybe 30% of the world's population for less than 400 years.

Before that, it was used by a very tiny minority of the world's population for maybe the preceding 1000 years.

During those years, differences in interpretation have led to wars which have collectively killed millions of people.

I'm a practicing Christian myself, but would never be so audacious as to suggest that the Holy Bible is the only scriptural foundation needed for a healthy society.

Literally several Billion human beings living right this very minute serve as living proof that is not so.

This post is extremely strong. And it's a healthy and welcome rebuttal to the cries of those who insist that "America is in decline".

I've never viewed the future of the USA, North America and the world at large with greater optimism than I do now. Those who do not share this perception are encouraged to seek out whatever counsel and assistance needed to help them adopt similar attitudes. Seems that simple reassurances from people like me are insufficient to bolster flagging attitudes about the future of our nation and of the world at large.

You gotta give us anti-Godless (heh) Libs some slack.

We start thinking in spiritual terms and suddenly it's less urgent what political party you're in.
