9/11 Victims' Kin Angered by Bush Ads
By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Relatives of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and a firefighters union are angry that President Bush (news - web sites)'s new campaign ads include images of the destroyed World Trade Center and firefighters carrying a flag-draped coffin through the rubble.

They say the ads are in poor taste and accuse Bush of exploiting the attacks. Bush's campaign defended the commercials as appropriate for an election about public policy and the war on terror, saying they were a tasteful reminder of what the country has been through the last three years.

The campaign had said in the past that it would not use the attacks for political gain.

"It makes me sick," Colleen Kelly, who lost her brother Bill Kelly Jr. in the attacks and leads a victims families group called Peaceful Tomorrows, said Thursday. "Would you ever go to someone's grave site and use that as an instrument of politics? That truly is what Ground Zero represents to me."

"September 11th was not just a distant tragedy. It's a defining event for the future of our country," Karen Hughes, a Bush campaign adviser, told "The Early Show" on CBS on Thursday. "Obviously, all of us mourn and grieve for the victims of that terrible day, but September 11 fundamentally changed our public policy in many important ways, and I think it's vital that the next president recognize that."

The first ads started running Thursday on broadcast channels in about 80 markets in 18 states, most of which are expected to be critical to the election, and nationwide on select cable networks. The ads do not mention Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites), focusing instead on improving Bush's image after criticism by Democrats in recent months. Bush is expected to spend a large part of his $100 million war chest on ads.

One of the ads shows the charred wreckage of the twin towers with a flag flying amid the debris. Another ad — and a Spanish-language version of it — use that image as well alongside firefighters carrying a flag-draped coffin through the rubble as sirens are heard. Firefighters are shown in all the ads.

Harold Schaitberger, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters, on Thursday called the ads disgraceful and said they should be pulled.

"We're not going to stand for him to put his arm around one of our members on top of a pile of rubble at Ground Zero during a tragedy and then stand by and watch him cut money for first responders," Schaitberger said. He said his union is politically independent even though it endorsed Kerry and has donated money to Republicans.

Barbara Minervino, a Republican from Middletown, N.J., who lost her husband, Louis, in the attacks, questioned whether Bush was "capitalizing on the event."

David Potorti, an independent from Cary, N.C., whose brother Jim died in the north tower, called the campaign's use of the images audacious.

"It's an insult to use the place where my brother died in an ad," Potorti said. "I would be just as outraged if any politician did this."

Until Bush cooperates with the federal commission that is investigating the nation's preparedness before the attacks and its response "by testifying in public under oath ... he should not be using 9/11 as political propaganda," said Kristen Breitweiser, of Middletown Township, N.J., whose husband, Ronald Breitweiser, 39, died in the World Trade Center.

"Three thousand people were murdered on President Bush's watch," Breitweiser said. "He has not cooperated with the investigation to find out why that happened."

Associated Press Writer Geoff Mulvihill in Mt. Laurel, N.J., contributed to this report.

Don't forget, also, that the Republican brew-ha-ha is set for this September in New York, with the 9/11 heap as its backdrop.

If the ads are intented to preach only to the choir, then they will probably work, as JPs poignant response demonstrates. However, if they're hoping to snag the 'middles' it will probably backfire, especially if this becomes a public relations nightmare.

I'm sure Jon Stewart will feature this tonight.

Why does this post not surprise me. Nobody can come up with anything good that John Kerry is going to for the country so they continue to rip on Bush.

Or as JointPleasures says....Blah,Blah,Blah!

KMAN, get used to it. This election is a referendum on George W. Bush. Period. That's how an incumbent re-election works. It's up to Bush to make his case. This is hsameful way to attempt to do that to try to make like he's aligning himself with the firefighters and so forth. I kinda thought there was an unspoken agreement by all not to show video of 9/11 or Ground Zero or any of that in political ads. Apparently Dubya didn't get the memo. But if he shows something like this then I think he's opened the door and if Kerry wanted to show video of the attack saying that Bush failed to protect us then I think now it might be OK, though still it would be low-class stooping to his level.

I simply ignore every single piece of mass-media campaigning these boneheads from the parties spew out during every campaign year, all the hand-wringing over who said what and all of the other bullshit their paid hacks regurgitate over the airwaves. I no longer give a damn what one or the other says, because it's not about truth and hasn't been for years or else Social Security wouldn't be so screwed up and a lot of other shit too - it's about getting elected and manipulating your average voter into voting for you, the reason why be damned.

I watch what people have done and actually do once they've been in office, and everything else they say they will do I simply treat as toilet paper - good for a one-time use but you can't rely on it even a second time.

Kman, if Bush were some six-year-old kid playing in a sandbox repeatedly getting kicked in the shins by bullying ten-year-olds, then I'd say, you know what, kman, you're absolutely right! Shame on us for picking on him.

But let's be realistic here, shall we?? The guy is a murdering, lying, cowardly opportunist whose entire history reeks of swindling and manipulation. He's a menace to the planet at large; he is more reviled and feared than Saddam ever was. "Ripping on Bush" as you call it isn't some pasttime that we unfairly engage in ... it is a necessary platform to do whatever it takes to get this guy away from the largest arsenal ever known to man.

If Bush is re-elected, I suspect the event will go down in infamy as the single biggest mistake Americans have made.

Hey, I saw the ad and its part of a 30 second spot that fits in very respectfully to the tradgedy...the ad to me,tells a very well done spot as to reflect the economy...and also THEE most important event in history in the last 50 years. (the 9/11 part of the ad last about 5 sec.)
The same people who bitch about this are the sam people who say that Mel Gibsons movie is anti semetic.

X...Is the Toronto Star a reliable news paper??

Pat: first, the people 'bitching' about this are the family members of the dead, not the ADL, so get that straight in your head.

Second, when you ask if the Toronto Star is reliable, I'm guessing you mean does it "conflict with the right-wing propaganda agenda" not "does it arrive on time every morning." The answer is, yes -- it is likely our most left-ist "national" paper. If you are looking for something that constructs itself as pro-working man, but spews out conservative platforms, that'd be the Toronto Sun. There's the Sunshine Girl on the inside back cover that I'm sure you'll like.

So Bush is not allowed to tell the voters how he responded to the worst day in the nations history? Meanwhile John Kerry is allowed to bring up Vietnam from 30+ years ago ?
If i am not mistaken there were a few people killed over there also.

X...now calm down...if you saw the ad,exploitation does not come to mind to the ordinary person...it is not a tasteless ad by anybodys stretch....I'd also want to know the politcal affiliation of these family members.

The reason I asked about the Star is there is an article about a link between Al Queda and Saddam (with some documentation)...rest assured there will be no explotation of this by the american "mainstream" media.

And don't you forget that NY offered to host BOTH conventions and the Democrats refused to have theirs in NY if the Republicans were going to also have theirs in NY.
Go get some facts before you spout off your nonsense.

A woman who lost a family member called Fox N Friends this morning and said that she had no problem with it. Also said that Bush did a lot for her family and all the victims.

I already knew that. However, another 'fact' of the matter is that the Republicans did in fact accept this offer as nothing more than a PR ploy. If the Dems were doing it, I would be disgusted by that as well.
