TRUE STORY:
I was flying back from LA to Toronto on Air Canada... my seat was overlooking the wing & the engine. The captain was giving his usual speech about temperature, how long the flight would be etc etc....
Then all of a sudden there was a big bang & the plane jolted a bit... the captain was on the loud speaker & he was heard going 'oh god!' before the microphone went out... I looked out the window & the Engine was in flames... I AM NOT JOKING...
anyway... the engine has a system to automatically put out the flames so they were out in a second, & the second engine was working fine... the plane only needed one of the two engines to fly... we went over the ocean to dump our fuel & landed in LAX... I spoke with the pilot later & he told me it was nothing, we could have flown all the way to Toronto on the One Engine but they turned around for safety... scary nonetheless...
THE funniest part is when I got to my Hotel at LAX at around 10pm I asked the front desk clerk if there was anywhere I could go to get a bite to eat... she looked at me funny & said "I sugest you order in..." It wasnt safe to be out at night I guess
I was so naive I coudnt have imagined it being unsafe to be out at night (to canadians that is a weird concept).
