Goes off at 10:00 PM EST
The Pick: 15 Dime - Rams
The Line: Rams +1 at 3:30 am pacific
UPDATE: Rams +2 1/2 at 5:30 am pacific. Now, this changes things a bit. With this line moving up at most books, it's time to buy up the 1/2-point on LA if your price is anywhere between +2 1/2 and +4). If it's +2 still, don't do anything.
Today's Analysis
I realize Sean McKay could care less about the preseason, but when I'm handicapping these summer games it still comes down to quarterback rotations and I like the Rams' options tonight more than what the Texans are bringing to the table.
The Rams opened with a 29-22 victory over the Chargers, a game that was only significant to me for the fact that third-stringer Bryce Perkins, who had a strong camp a year ago (started all three games; 56-for-91, 451 yards, 3 TDs), went the distance and played well (10-of-17 passing, 133 yards, 2 TDs; 8 carries, 39 yards rushing).
Perkins plays the second half tonight as QB2 John Wolford gets the starting nod in his first significant action since replacing Jared Goff as the team's starter in the 2020 wildcard game against Seattle, a contest he was knocked out early with an injury. Wolford, who has taken the majority of reps with the first-team offense during camp with Matthew Stafford nursing an elbow injury, only took 24 snaps in three games a year ago. However, McKay likes him, so much so that he benched Goff a few years back in his favor when the playoffs began.
Now the bad news: LA's defense, with all back-ups on the field, couldn't stop the Chargers' QB duo of Chase Daniel and Easton Stick, who were a combined 27-of-40 for 226 yards and 2 TDs last weekend. The Texans are expected to give Davis Mills more than the two series he played in a last-minute, 17-13 victory over New Orleans last week before he yields again to Jeff Driskel (16-26, 165 yards, 2 TDs, 3 INTs vs the Saints).
Lovie Smith obviously wants and needs to build a winning culture with Houston, but he also has gone on record as saying he likes to treat the final exhibition game as the season's dress rehearsal. With Perkins having shown he can move the chains two straight preseasons, the Rams, who opened at -1 before dropping to +2 should be the stronger finisher.
