Baylor vs Texas

Friday, November 25, 2022 12:00 PM (ET)

No. 23 Texas will look to keep its chances of playing for the Big 12 Conference championship alive when it hosts Baylor on Friday in Austin in the teams' final-regular season game.
The Longhorns (7-4, 5-3 Big 12) must beat Baylor and have Kansas beat No. 12 Kansas State on Saturday night to earn a berth opposite undefeated TCU in the league championship game. The Bears (6-5, 4-4) already are bowl-eligible and will aim to derail their longtime rival's title hopes.
"We all understand the ramifications of where it's at in the Big 12," Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said Monday. "We don't shy away from those things. We've got to do our part and see what happens after that."
The Longhorns re-entered the College Football Playoff rankings Tuesday after a dominating 55-14 road victory over Kansas on Saturday, their second win in their past three games.
Bijan Robinson rushed for a career-high 243 yards and four touchdowns in just three quarters as the Longhorns finished with 539 total yards -- 427 on the ground. Texas also got 108 yards on 11 carries from Jonathon Brooks in an effort that included two TDs in the fourth quarter, one of which covered 70 yards.
The victory over Kansas ensured that Texas will have a winning season, and at No. 24, the Longhorns also moved back into the AP Top 25 as the only four-loss team that's ranked. Texas' four losses are by a combined 18 points.
"You can always look back and play the ‘what-if' game," Sarkisian said. "‘What if' this play and ‘what if' that play in a couple of other ballgames, but in the end, the resiliency our guys have shown, I'm very proud of that."
Baylor came within a hold-your-breath, last-play field goal of ruining TCU's undefeated season in a 29-28 loss in Waco on Saturday. The Bears will head into the regular-season finale looking to secure their 11th seven-win season in the past 13 years.
The Bears churned out 501 yards of total offense -- their fourth game of the season with 500-plus yards -- kept the ball for nearly 34 minutes and effectively shut down explosive TCU until the last seven minutes. Baylor's Blake Shapen passed for 269 yards and a touchdown while Monaray Baldwin made six catches for 123 yards.
"I think always the emphasis is where I'm at right now, this is who I could become," Baylor coach Dave Aranda said. "And then further, just collectively, this is where we're at right now, this is what we could become. You look at that game this past Saturday, and the effort, the speed and just all of it, that's us right there. We just have to be able to execute better."
The Longhorns lead the overall series 79-28-4, including a 48-10-2 all-time mark in games played in Austin. Baylor captured last year's contest in Waco 31-24 but has not won in Austin since 2014, a three-game losing streak.

Tulane vs Cincinnati

Friday, November 25, 2022 12:00 PM (ET)

No. 25 Cincinnati is familiar with competing for the American Athletic Conference championship.
No. 21 Tulane isn't.
But both teams will meet as equals on Friday in an AAC showdown in Cincinnati.
The winner will claim the regular-season conference title and host the AAC championship game next Saturday.
The Bearcats (9-2, 6-1 AAC) are two-time defending conference champions and have won 32 consecutive games in Nippert Stadium. Only Clemson (40) has a longer active winning streak at home.
"Nobody wants to be the guy that lets the streak go," linebacker Wil Huber said. "But it's not something that you go into the week thinking, ‘I'm not going to lose this streak.' No one goes into a game thinking about not trying to lose. We go into every game expecting to win."
Cincinnati, which qualified for the College Football Playoff last season, is 31-4 since the start of the 2020 season.
"I want them to embrace the opportunity that they've created and enjoy it," Cincinnati coach Luke Fickell said of his players. "It doesn't always happen at the end of November that you're playing for the championship in the final game. They've created this and they deserve to enjoy it."
Fickell said he's unsure if starting quarterback Ben Bryant will be available. Bryant suffered a foot injury during the first half of a 23-3 win at Temple last Saturday.
Evan Prater replaced Bryant and would start if Bryant is unable to go.
"I think he's ready," Fickell said of Prater, who completed 12 of 17 passes for 127 yards last week. "It's not going to be too big for him if he has to go in there. In the second half, he did a really good job of managing where we were and what we needed to do."
The Green Wave (9-2, 6-1) were picked seventh in the AAC preseason poll after finishing 2-10 last season.
"It's a great feeling to reflect back on how bad we did last year and now we've got the chance of a lifetime," said running back Tyjae Spears, who has five consecutive 100-yard games and is 4 yards short of 1,000 for this season. "We're just living in the moment, trying to make the most out of the opportunity we have."
Tulane sat alone atop the conference standings before losing to UCF 38-31 two weeks ago but bounced back with a dominant 59-24 victory against SMU last Thursday. Quarterback Michael Pratt passed for three touchdowns and ran for three more.
"We played a great game and we're going to have to play great again on Friday," Green Wave coach Willie Fritz said. "We've got to take care of business. This is a big, big challenge for us."
Tulane first appeared on the national radar this season after upsetting Kansas State 17-10 on the road on Sept. 17. Fritz said he expects a similar atmosphere in Cincinnati.
"This is a big deal for our program," Fritz said. "We try to do the same preparation if at all possible every single week."
These teams could meet again in the championship game, or the winner could face either UCF or Houston depending on what happens Saturday when UCF faces USF and Houston plays Tulsa.

Arizona St. vs Arizona

Friday, November 25, 2022 03:00 PM (ET)

Neither team will be traveling this bowl season, but either Arizona or Arizona State can walk away feeling good after playing for the Territorial Cup on Friday in Tucson, Ariz.
The visiting Sun Devils (3-8, 2-6 Pac-12) are looking for a new head coach after firing Herm Edwards during the season and will finish with just their fourth losing regular season since 2003. Amid their troubles, they would love to continue to claim superiority over their neighbors to the south, looking to win their sixth consecutive game in the rivalry.
"It's absolutely amazing that you can win one football game and most of the rest of the season will be forgotten," said Arizona State's Shaun Aguano, who has gone 2-6 as interim head coach. "It's a legacy for this class."
For Arizona (4-7, 2-6), ending the losing streak to Arizona State and finishing with five victories would widely be considered a successful second season for coach Jedd Fisch. The Wildcats' triumphs include beating then-No. 12 UCLA on Nov. 12, but they were eliminated from bowl consideration by losing 31-20 at home to Washington State last Saturday.
"It's a huge game for older guys that have been a part of this program for a while and having not gotten a win," Fisch said of the matchup with the Sun Devils. "It's a big, big game for our young guys ... to take the momentum of winning this game into the offseason."
Turnovers have been a common theme in Arizona's losses, including when Jayden de Laura threw four interceptions last week. But when he is in sync with a talented group of receivers -- de Laura ranks fifth nationally at 316.8 passing yards per game -- the Wildcats are dangerous.
Arizona State recently turned to quarterback Trenton Bourguet, who supplanted Florida transfer Emory Jones. Bourguet, who is from Tucson, will be a major storyline this week, but the Sun Devils' key offensive player is running back Xazavian Valladay, who has rushed for 1,095 yards. He will be going against an Arizona run defense that rates 125th nationally (213.5 yards per game).
The Sun Devils' five-game run against Arizona is the longest in the rivalry since the Wildcats won five in a row from 1982 to 1986 to start a nine-year unbeaten streak that included a tie in 1987. Arizona State won 70-7 when the teams last met in Tucson in 2020, prompting Arizona to fire coach Kevin Sumlin.

Arkansas vs Missouri

Friday, November 25, 2022 03:30 PM (ET)

Missouri can secure bowl eligibility while Arkansas will try to raise its bowl profile when these Southeastern Conference rivals meet Friday in Columbia, Mo.
The Tigers (5-6, 2-5 SEC) and Razorbacks (6-5, 3-4) have dubbed this annual game the Battle Line Rivalry. A trophy will be at stake on Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium.
Missouri won five straight games in the series before Arkansas prevailed 34-17 last season.
"The only thing we're focused on is it's a rivalry game and it's trophy week," Missouri coach Eliah Drinkwitz said. "That's it. None of the other stuff matters. The most important thing to us is that they have a trophy and we want it and the only way to get it is to play our best game and to prepare the way that we know how to prepare and to play with unbelievable effort.
"That's the focus and that's why we did Senior Week last week. This week is all about rivalry week, Arkansas and the Battle Line trophy."
Missouri rolled to a 45-14 victory over New Mexico State in their previous game after suffering a 66-24 beating at Tennessee. Brady Cook continued his improved play by completing 19 of 27 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 71 yards on seven carries.
"I felt like with the way things ended against Tennessee, I thought it was really important for us to bounce back," Drinkwitz said. "Offensively, to score on our first three drives, to score on this opening series of both the first half and second half which was the first time we've done that all year ? there was real growth there to convert some big third downs and we converted the fourth down."
The Razorbacks are coming off a 42-27 upset of then-No. 14 Ole Miss. They got quarterback KJ Jefferson back from his clavicle injury and their offensive clicked back into high gear.
"Man, it's nice to have KJ back," Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said. "We weren't too clean on the first two drives, first two scoring drives, but he made us clean because of his athleticism."
Jefferson completed 17 of 22 passes for 168 yards and three touchdowns against the Rebels. He also rushed for 47 yards on eight carries.
"When you have a guy behind you like that, it builds confidence in you when you have a big runner that can physically run over people," Pittman said. "I mean, on the draw play, they all came inside, and he cut outside for 20, 30 yards. When you have a guy back there that can break tackles and make things happen, you play a little bit better, to be honest with you."
The Arkansas offense has averaged 34.9 points per game with Jefferson and just 13.5 in two games in which Jefferson has been sidelined.
On defense, the Razorbacks may be missing cornerstone linebacker Bumper Pool, who is battling hip and back injuries. Pool is second on the club with 92 tackles.
"Bumper is still Bumper and trying to hang on," Pittman said. "I don't know that he'll be able to or not. He's beat up, not healthy. We're bowl eligible. I don't know if he'll be able to play or not."

North Carolina St. vs North Carolina

Friday, November 25, 2022 03:30 PM (ET

With two losses, it's fair to assume that No. 18 North Carolina is eliminated from the College Football Playoff, but the Tar Heels are aiming to end their regular season on a strong note and carry some momentum into its Atlantic Coast Conference Championship clash with Clemson.
On Friday, the Tar Heels will host rival North Carolina State in Chapel Hill in the regular-season finale for both squads. It's a chance for both teams to bolster their resumes for bowl season.
UNC (9-2, 6-1 ACC) brings to the game a potent offense, while NC State (7-4, 3-4 ACC) brings a stout defense. The Heels are sixth in the nation in passing touchdowns per game (3.1) and tied for eighth in total offensive yards per game (492.7). Meanwhile, the Wolfpack are 21st in total defense (323.4 yards allowed per game) and ninth in rushing yards allowed per game (101.4).
Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye still leads the nation in total yards with 4,211 this season.
"NC State is a very emotional game, it's a rival game, and I've always said that fans are the ones that create rivalries," UNC coach Mack Brown said. "NC State has played great defense; not good defense. Drake Thomas, Isaiah Moore and Payton Wilson are three of the best linebackers in the country."
Both teams are coming off loses. North Carolina saw its six-game winning streak snapped on Saturday in a surprise 21-17 loss to Georgia Tech.
The Tar Heels started that game against the Yellow Jackets off strong, as Elijah Green broke away for an 80-yard touchdown on UNC's first offensive play. Brown told his players and assistant coaches to mentally reset after that play.
"It's usually an imposter," Brown said. "It just looks like it's going to be too easy. And you jump out 17-0 and then you don't finish it."
Indeed, UNC was held scoreless in the second half as Georgia Tech scored a pair of touchdowns to take the lead. Brown called the loss and the Heels' performance "very uncharacteristic" and "very, very disappointing."
UNC might get two offensive weapons back for the NC State game. After missing the loss to Georgia Tech -- both with upper-body injuries -- tight end John Copenhaver and receiver Antoine Green both practiced on Monday.
The Wolfpack are coming off a 25-10 road loss at Louisville. NC State was forced to play redshirt freshman Ben Finley at quarterback due to injuries to Devin Leary and MJ Morris. In his first appearance of the season, Finley completed 16 of 35 passes for 201 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
It remains unclear if Morris will play against North Carolina.
"I'm not going have any answers on medical things," NC State coach Dave Doeren said. "Let's see this week how practice goes. We have four days. It's really nobody's business."
Last week was also a tough week for NC State off the field as a former player -- Joseph Boletepeli -- was arrested after stalking and making threats against Doeren.
"Outside of the COVID year where it was tough for everybody to be a head coach, this last week was the hardest in my career," Doeren said.
UNC has the advantage in the all-time series against NC State with a 68-37-6 record. The Wolfpack beat the Tar Heels last season 34-30 in Raleigh.

Nebraska vs Iowa

Friday, November 25, 2022 04:00 PM (ET)

After losing three consecutive conference games, Iowa stands one victory from the Big Ten championship game thanks to a four-game winning streak.
Iowa, at one point, was 3-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Then came victories over Northwestern, Purdue, Wisconsin and Minnesota, pushing the Hawkeyes (7-4, 5-3 Big Ten) in position to play either Ohio State or Michigan in the Big Ten title game.
A victory over Nebraska (3-8, 2-6) on Friday at Iowa City, Iowa, will make it happen.
"Really happy for our guys," said Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, who was embroiled in criticism after the early struggles this season. "Really happy locker room. That's November football, whatever it takes to get it done."
Iowa has won seven straight games against Nebraska, which is likely playing its last game under interim head coach Mickey Joseph.
The Cornhuskers lost five consecutive Big Ten games after starting 2-1, including a painful defeat last week.
Nebraska was competitive in the 15-14 home loss to Wisconsin but fell short when the Badgers scored on a touchdown run with 35 seconds left.
The Cornhuskers' offense totaled 171 yards, with 106 yards passing and 65 yards on the ground.
Casey Thompson completed 12 of 19 pass attempts for 106 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
"Take a hat off to these kids," said Joseph, whose team has lost three of the five games in the losing streak by a touchdown or less. "Just a good character group. A group that's not going to quit."
Iowa limited Minnesota to 87 passing yards in the 13-10 victory last week -- the third time this season an opponent has passed for less than 100 yards.
This is the first season since 1929 that the Hawkeyes' defense has allowed 10 or fewer points in eight games. The 1929 team gave up 28 points the entire eight-game season.
Jack Campbell, a linebacker, had a fourth-quarter interception against Minnesota and also tallied 10 tackles -- his seventh game of 10 tackles or more this season. Campbell is now 20th in school history with 287 career tackles.

UCLA vs California

Friday, November 25, 2022 04:30 PM (ET)

Coming off a heartbreaking loss that dashed its Pac-12 championship hopes, No. 18 UCLA tries to regroup and finish its season on a high note when it travels to Berkeley, Calif., for a matchup with Cal on Friday.
The Bruins (8-3, 5-3 Pac-12) fell from College Football Playoff contention to out of the hunt for the league title with consecutive losses to Arizona on Nov. 12 and USC on last week.
The latter was a high-scoring, dramatic, back-and-forth contest in which UCLA was driving late with a chance to spoil its crosstown rival's own playoff hopes, but Dorian Thompson-Robinson had a pass intercepted on the decisive play of the 48-45 contest.
"It hurts, but we want to end this thing on the right foot," Thompson-Robinson said of switching gears on a short week to prepare for Cal. "We have 20-something seniors on this team, guys I played with here forever. Trying to send those guys out on the right foot, and the underclassmen know that, they understand that."
Thompson-Robinson passed for four touchdowns and rushed for two in the shootout against USC, continuing to add to the best of his five seasons at UCLA and moving closer to various Bruins records.
Already UCLA's all-time leader in passing touchdowns with 85, Thompson-Robinson is 474 yards shy of passing Cade McNown as the program's all-time leader in passing yards. McNown finished with 10,708 yards through the air.
"One of (Thompson-Robinson's) greatest qualities -- and I say it all the time -- is his toughness," UCLA coach Chip Kelly said. "He's as tough a quarterback as I've ever been around, and that's just the type of kid he is. ... He's going to play the game and give it all he has."
Cal (4-7, 2-6) had its bowl hopes dashed amid a six-game losing streak, but the Golden Bears can conclude the season with some positive momentum and a winning streak.
They outlasted rival Stanford 27-20 last week thanks to a fourth-quarter rally.
Cal rolled off 21 consecutive points in the final period, which included Jaydn Ott catching a two-point conversion pass after Jackson Sirmon's 37-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown, then Ott producing the win-sealing touchdown run with less than a minute remaining in the game.
Ott comes in with 842 yards rushing, sixth best among all freshmen in the nation. He became the first true freshman in program history to eclipse 100 yards in his debut, and he holds the conference's single-game high this season with 274 yards against Arizona.
If he can gain 158 yards on Friday, Ott would become the conference's first freshman to reach 1,000 since Jermar Jefferson of Oregon State in 2018, and Cal's first 1,000-yard rusher since Patrick Laird in 2017.
Meanwhile, Golden Bears quarterback Jack Plummer looks to finish strong after underwhelming performances the past two weeks against Oregon State and Stanford. He finished with 147 yards and an interception in the loss to the Beavers, and he threw two interceptions in the red zone against the Cardinal.
"I've just got to take those out of the memory bank," Plummer said. "I knew what was wrong seconds after the play was over. I don't need to go back and watch the film to say, 'Hey, I shouldn't have thrown that.'"

Florida vs Florida St.

Friday, November 25, 2022 07:30 PM (ET)

Through 11 games, Florida State has had a renaissance under third-year coach Mike Norvell, but all of that will be tempered if the No. 16 Seminoles fail to do their job on their home turf on Black Friday.
Their mission: Beat the University of Florida.
On a rare Friday evening matchup on rivalry weekend, the Seminoles will host the Gators in Tallahassee, Fla., in the 66th meeting between the schools.
Following Saturday's 49-17 walloping of Louisiana, Florida State (8-3) sits with a chance at a nine-win regular season, which would be its first since 2016 -- an improvement that represents a major upturn in the program.
After Norvell started his tenure in the state capital with a dismal 3-10 mark in 2020 into the first four games of 2021, the former Memphis coach and his Seminoles have won 13 of the past 19. They finished 5-3 in the ACC's Atlantic Division this season, trailing only 8-0 Clemson.
Across their last four contests against Georgia Tech, Miami, Syracuse and Louisiana, FSU has won the scoring battle 173-39.
Despite the Gators (6-5) being inconsistent in 2022 -- beating then-No. 7 Utah in the season opener and losing last week to SEC East Division doormat Vanderbilt -- Norvell sees a dangerous squad under first-year coach Billy Napier.
"You see talent, this is a talented team," said Norvell, whose group has won four straight games on two occasions. "Great size, speed, athleticism. You've seen them play at very high levels at different spots of the year.
"They're in the first year of a new staff, new schemes, different things like that. It's a talented group we're playing."
Napier opined that hitting on all cylinders isn't happening on a regular basis -- in Gainesville or anywhere else.
"I think we live in a time where you just see a lot of inconsistency," he said Monday.
The Gators lead the all-time series 37-26-2, but that inconsistency was out in full force in Nashville, Tenn., last weekend. Napier's club did the nearly unthinkable in its SEC finale: Losing to the one foe it consistently defeats.
In a mistake-filled showing against Vanderbilt, the Gators dropped a 31-24 decision after trailing almost the entire game, once by as many as 16 points.
The Commodores recovered a muffed punt for a score late in the first half. They then received three touchdown passes from Mike Wright for a 28-12 third-quarter lead that Florida could never equal, much less overcome.
In the Music City, the Gators authored a teary gridiron ballad in front of mostly their fans who had traveled to see an easy win.
They committed 80 yards in penalties, went 4-for-15 on third downs and rushed for 45 yards in losing on the road against the Commodores for the first time since 1988 -- ending a 15-game winning streak.
Said Napier after the ugly showing: "It's a setback, no question ... I saw a lot of Florida beating Florida."
The Gators will be without Ventrell Miller (targeting) for the first half against Florida State. Two of their top wide receivers, Xzavier Henderson and Ricky Pearsall, are questionable to play.

California vs. UCLA.

Current Records: UCLA 8-3; California 4-7

What to Know

The UCLA Bruins have enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they must head out on the road. UCLA and the California Golden Bears will face off in a Pac-12 battle at 4:30 p.m. ET on Friday at FTX Field at California Memorial Stadium. If the nothing to nothing final from the last time they met is any indication, this contest will be decided by the defense.
In almost any game, 45 points would all but guarantee a win. Not in this one. The Bruins fell just short of the USC Trojans by a score of 48-45. UCLA was up 14 to nothing at the end of the first quarter but couldn't hold on to the lead. Despite the defeat, they got a solid performance out of QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who passed for four TDs and 309 yards on 38 attempts in addition to rushing for two TDs and 75 yards. Thompson-Robinson's 55-yard touchdown toss to WR Kazmeir Allen in the fourth quarter made for one of the most memorable moments of the night.
Speaking of close games: the Stanford Cardinal were up 17-6 over California going into the fourth quarter this past Saturday, but California stole the victory right from under Stanford's nose in the closing minutes for a final score of 27-20. The Golden Bears' RB Jaydn Ott looked sharp as he punched in one rushing touchdown. One of those touchdowns came with 1:01 remaining to put California in the lead for good.
The Bruins are the favorite in this one, with an expected 10-point margin of victory. Those burned by picking them against the spread this past Saturday might want to keep in mind that the squad has not yet dropped back-to-back games against the spread this season.
California's win lifted them to 4-7 while UCLA's loss dropped them down to 8-3. Giving up four turnovers,
UCLA had had trouble holding onto the ball. We'll see if the Golden Bears can exploit that vulnerability.

North Carolina vs. NC State.

Current Records: NC State 7-4; North Carolina 9-2

What to Know

The North Carolina Tar Heels and the NC State Wolfpack are set to square off in an ACC matchup at 3:30 p.m. ET Nov. 25 at Kenan Memorial Stadium. Last year, the Tar Heels and NC State were perfect equals, playing to nothing to nothing and nothing to nothing draws.
UNC scored first but ultimately less than the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in their game this past Saturday. UNC was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 21-17 to Georgia Tech. Despite the defeat, UNC got a solid performance out of RB Elijah Green, who punched in two rushing touchdowns. One of the most memorable plays of the matchup was Green's 80-yard touchdown rush in the first quarter.
Meanwhile, the Wolfpack ended up a good deal behind the Louisville Cardinals when they played this past Saturday, losing 25-10. No one had a standout game offensively for NC State, but RB Michael Allen led the way with one touchdown.
The Tar Heels are the favorite in this one, with an expected 6.5-point margin of victory. Those burned by picking them against the spread this past Saturday might want to keep in mind that the team has not yet dropped back-to-back games against the spread this season.
The losses put UNC at 9-2 and NC State at 7-4. A couple stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: UNC ranks eighth in the nation when it comes to thrown interceptions, with only four on the season. But the Wolfpack enter the contest having picked the ball off 16 times, good for fourth in the nation. These opposing strengths should make for an exciting matchup.
