Preview: Mariners at Cubs

GAME: Seattle Mariners (51-49) at Chicago Cubs (61-40)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 29 - 2:20 PM EST
WHERE: Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Despite a tumultuous July, the Chicago Cubs still own the best record in the major leagues, and they’ll look to improve upon that mark when they host the Seattle Mariners for a three-game series that begins Friday. The Cubs are a National League-best 32-16 at home after taking two straight from the visiting Chicago White Sox, while the Mariners are 10-4 in interleague play.

The Mariners had a day off on Thursday after splitting a two-game set in Pittsburgh to move to 3-2 on their eight-game road trip. Seattle’s offense has been feast-or-famine on the trek, scoring 21 runs in two games while totaling three in the other three contests. Jon Lester hopes for more of the latter as he looks to continue his strong performance at home, where he is 5-2 with a 2.18 ERA in nine starts this season. Lester will have to contend with a power-packed Mariners lineup that boasts eight players with double digits in home runs, including three with at least 20.

TV: 2:20 p.m. ET, ROOT MLB Network, Northwest (Seattle), CSN Chicago

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners RH Hisashi Iwakuma (11-6, 3.96 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Jon Lester (10-4, 3.09)

Iwakuma has won five straight outings, posting quality starts in four of them and compiling a 2.51 ERA over that span. The 35-year-old won at Toronto last time out, allowing two runs and four hits over six frames for his third straight quality start. Iwakuma faced the Cubs once in 2013, allowing four runs over eight innings in a no-decision.

Lester had a rough outing Sunday at Milwaukee, allowing four runs in four-plus innings, but a late rally got him off the hook. The 32-year-old has issued 11 walks over his last three starts and has walked three or more in five of his last seven outings. Lester is 5-4 with a 3.52 ERA in 12 career starts against the Mariners, but he hasn’t faced them since 2014.

WALK-OFFS

1. Seattle OF/DH Nelson Cruz sat out Wednesday’s series finale at Pittsburgh after fouling a ball off his left leg a day earlier but is expected to return to the lineup at Wrigley Field, and he is 11-for-28 with three homers versus Lester.

2. The Cubs are 56-1 when leading entering the ninth inning after newly acquired LHP Aroldis Chapman nailed down his first save for the club on Thursday.

3. Mariners 2B Robinson Cano needs three extra-base hits to join Carlos Lee, Albert Pujols and Eddie Mathews as the only players in MLB history with at least 50 in each of his first 12 seasons.

Preview: Orioles at Blue Jays

GAME: Baltimore Orioles (58-43) at Toronto Blue Jays (57-45)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 29 - 7:07 PM EST
WHERE: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Baltimore Orioles lead the American League East but are experiencing a mini-funk as they enter a pivotal three-game divisional showdown with the host Toronto Blue Jays that begins on Friday. The Orioles have lost three consecutive games, including a 6-2 setback against Minnesota on Thursday, and have seen their lead over the Blue Jays dwindle to 1 1/2 games.

Baltimore has been outscored 15-6 during its slide and has belted just two home runs -- both by Adam Jones. The Orioles (150) and Blue Jays (144) are the top two home run-hitting teams in the majors and feature five players with more than 20 blasts -- major league-leader Mark Trumbo (30), Chris Davis (22) and Manny Machado (21) for Baltimore and Edwin Encarnacion (27) and Josh Donaldson (25) for Toronto. Trumbo enters the series in a 1-for-18 slump and without a homer over his last five games. Toronto has won six of its last nine games but has allowed 22 runs in its last two defeats.

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, MASN (Baltimore), Sportsnet (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Kevin Gausman (2-7, 3.77 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH Marco Estrada (5-4, 2.94)

Gausman is coming off a strong outing in which he defeated Cleveland by scattering four hits over seven scoreless innings. He is 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 10 career appearances (five starts) against Toronto and settled for a no-decision on June 10, when he gave up three runs - two earned - and eight hits in 6 1/3 frames. Gausman has thoroughly befuddled Encarnacion, who is hitless in 12 at-bats against the 25-year-old.

Estrada lost to Seattle in his last outing as he returned from a back injury, giving up two runs and seven hits in six innings. The 33-year-old originally was slated to start Wednesday against San Diego, but the Blue Jays pushed him back so he could face the Orioles. Estrada is 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in eight career appearances (six starts) versus Baltimore but did not factor in the decision on June 10 after yielding three runs and four hits in six innings while matched up against Gausman.

WALK-OFFS

1. Blue Jays RF/DH Jose Bautista is 1-for-11 in three games since returning from a toe injury.

2. Davis is 3-for-7 over his last two games after going hitless in 24 at-bats over his previous seven contests.

3. Encarnacion, who leads the majors with 87 RBIs, is 4-for-21 with a homer and nine strikeouts over his last six games.

GAME: Oakland Athletics (47-55) at Cleveland Indians (57-42)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 29 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Progressive Field, Cleveland, Ohio
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

A pair of promising 25-year-old right-handers take the mound Friday as Kendall Graveman leads the Oakland Athletics into the opener of a three-game series versus Trevor Bauer and the host Cleveland Indians. Graveman has won four straight starts and hasn't tasted defeat in more than two months while Bauer is looking to get back on track after a trio of difficult outings on the heels of a three-game winning streak.

The American League Central-best Indians - like Bauer - have also hit a rough patch and seen their lead over second-place Detroit shrink to 4 1/2 games after dropping four of five to AL East-leading Baltimore and NL East-best Washington. Francisco Lindor is riding a five-game hitting streak and has scored six times in his last eight heading into Friday's tilt versus Graveman, against whom he is 3-for-6 with a double in his career. Oakland has momentum on its nine-game road trip as it has won four straight series for the first time in two years and has emerged victorious in nine of 13 games since the All-Star break. "There's a loose relaxness in the clubhouse before the games. It's a good chemistry. Winning creates that," Khris Davis, who belted two homers in Wednesday's 6-4 victory over Texas and has six RBIs during his five-game hitting streak, told reporters.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSN California (Oakland), STO (Cleveland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Kendall Graveman (7-6, 4.15 ERA) vs. Indians RH Trevor Bauer (7-4, 3.65)

Graveman recorded his second career complete game Saturday after yielding three runs in a 4-3 victory over Tampa Bay. The Alabama native permitted only eight earned runs in 30 2/3 innings during his four-start winning streak and is 6-0 since a hard-luck loss to the New York Yankees on May 19. Graveman will have a tall task on his hands against the Athletics, who are 15-4 in their last 19 contests when facing a right-handed starter.

Bauer fell to 0-2 in his last three outings Saturday after yielding five runs for the second time in that stretch. The Californian was taken deep on two occasions in a 5-1 loss to Baltimore after surrendering that same number of homers over his previous eight starts. Bauer looks to bounce back versus Oakland, against which he allowed one run on four hits in 6 2/3 innings of a no-decision in his lone encounter with the club in August 2015.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cleveland CF Tyler Naquin has 10 RBIs and seven runs scored while hitting safely in all but one of his last nine contests.

2. Oakland CF Coco Crisp has gone 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs in back-to-back games after going 3-for-28 in his previous seven.

3. The Indians are 7-9 versus the AL West.

GAME: Houston Astros (55-46) at Detroit Tigers (54-48)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 29 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Comerica Park, Detroit, Michigan
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Jose Altuve has made himself at home on the road with a scintillating 19-game hitting streak away from Minute Maid Park. The diminutive star looks to add another notch to that belt while also reaching base for the 35th consecutive road contest Friday when the Houston Astros open a three-game series at the Detroit Tigers.

Altuve is a blistering 40-for-77 during his road hitting streak and has 23 hits overall since the All-Star break, but is only 1-for-3 in a small sample size against Friday starter Matt Boyd. While the Astros salvaged the finale of their three-game set with the New York Yankees on Wednesday to post their fifth win in seven outings, the Tigers also have won five of seven after becoming the first team this season to sweep Boston. Miguel Cabrera homered for the second straight game in Wednesday's 4-3 win to finish up a 5-for-10 series with three RBIs and three runs scored at Fenway Park. The two-time American League MVP looks to continue his run of good fortune Friday against starter Collin McHugh, versus whom he is 4-for-8 with a pair of doubles.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Houston), FSN Detroit

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Collin McHugh (7-6, 4.18 ERA) vs. Tigers LH Matt Boyd (1-2, 4.63)

McHugh followed up his dominating 10-strikeout performance over six scoreless innings against Seattle on July 17 with another sterling six-frame effort six nights later in a 7-2 victory versus the Los Angeles Angels. The 29-year-old looks to ride that momentum into Detroit, against which he is 0-2 with a 3.72 ERA in three career starts. McHugh allowed eight runs and two homers in those starts versus the Tigers, the same totals that he has permitted over four starts (23 2/3 innings) in July.

Boyd excelled out of the gate since being recalled earlier this month, allowing one run on seven hits with 11 strikeouts in two starts (11 innings) before permitting three runs in 4 1/3 frames of a no-decision versus the Chicago White Sox on Saturday. The 25-year-old struggled in his lone encounter with Houston on Aug. 16, 2015, serving up a pair of solo homers to Colby Rasmus (1-for-31 in his last eight games) and five runs total in as many innings of a no-decision. Boyd is 1-1 with a 2.01 ERA in four home games (three starts) this season with a 1.07 WHIP and .182 batting average against.

WALK-OFFS

1. Detroit, which opens a nine-game homestand, has won 21 of its last 31 at Comerica Park.

2. Houston 1B Marwin Gonzalez belted four solo homers and scored 11 runs during his career-high 11-game hitting streak.

3. Tigers DH Victor Martinez is riding a three-game RBI streak to go along with hitting safely in each of his last five contests.

GAME: New York Yankees (52-49) at Tampa Bay Rays (39-61)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 29 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

While the tabloids have been quick to predict gloom and doom for the New York Yankees this season, manager Joe Girardi's club has steadily improved with each passing month. The visiting Yankees, winners of eight of their last 11, look to wrap up a successful July this weekend when they play the opener of a three-game series versus the American League East-rival Tampa Bay Rays on Friday.

After recording losses in 14 of their 22 contests in April, New York's winning percentage has climbed in the ensuing months - with a 13-10 mark in July. Brian McCann, who belted a solo homer in Wednesday's 4-1 setback to Houston, is riding a four-game hitting streak overall and is a blistering 12-for-23 with three homers and 10 RBIs in his career versus Friday starter Jake Odorizzi. While the Yankees have scratched back into the postseason discussion, that type of talk has long since been tabled for Tampa Bay. A lack of offense is partly to blame for the cellar-dwelling Rays, who mustered seven runs during a four-game losing skid before wrapping up a nine-game road trip with a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, YES (New York), FSN Sun (Tampa Bay)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Ivan Nova (7-5, 4.65 ERA) vs. Rays RH Jake Odorizzi (4-5, 4.10)

Nova, who reportedly is "the next priority" for the trade-minded Yankees, allowed one run for the third time in four outings Saturday in a no-decision versus San Francisco. The 29-year-old impending free agent was taken deep, however, for the fourth time in his last three trips to the mound and has permitted 17 in his last 16 starts. Nova kept the ball in the park in 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief versus Tampa Bay on April 22 to improve to 8-6 versus the franchise.

Odorizzi recorded his majors-leading 12th no-decision on Friday despite tossing eight scoreless innings against Oakland. The 26-year-old has cobbled together back-to-back strong outings after getting shredded for 11 runs on 15 hits in the previous two. Odorizzi pitched well in his last meeting with the Yankees on May 29, but Starlin Castro's two-run homer accounted for the lone hit over seven innings as he fell to 3-5 in his career versus the club.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tampa Bay 2B Tim Beckham is 10-for-19 since the All-Star break, but 2-for-21 with nine strikeouts in nine career games versus New York.

2. Yankees RF Carlos Beltran has four multi-hit performances in his last six contests.

3. Rays 3B Evan Longoria collected three hits Wednesday and has 15 (four homers) in his last 10 contests.

Preview: Rockies at Mets

GAME: Colorado Rockies (50-52) at New York Mets (53-48)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 29 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Citi Field, New York City, New York
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The one constant for the New York Mets this season has been at the back of their bullpen, but that suddenly is a concern after closer Jeurys Familia blew a save for the second time in an many days. The Mets will try to get back on track when they host the Colorado Rockies on Friday in the second of a four-game set.

Familia had a streak of 52 consecutive saves -- the third-longest in league history -- snapped in Wednesday's loss to St. Louis and made it two straight blown saves when he couldn't hold a one-run lead in Thursday's 2-1 setback. New York fell to 6-7 since the All-Star break and has failed to score more than three runs nine times during that span. Colorado scored the winning run on a wild pitch to improve to 4-0 against the Mets this season while snapping a 10-game skid at Citi Field. Winners of three in a row and seven of eight, the Rockies will send Tyler Chatwood to the mound to face Steven Matz.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Colorado), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies RH Tyler Chatwood (9-6, 3.65 ERA) vs. Mets LH Steven Matz (8-6, 3.36)

Chatwood has been struggling to regain his form since returning from a 2 1/2-week stint on the disabled list due to a back straight. He tossed five scoreless innings of one-hit ball in a win over Atlanta last time out but permitted a staggering total of eight walks. Chatwood worked seven innings of three-run ball versus the Mets on May 15 to improve to 2-0 with a 1.57 ERA against them.

Matz halted a nine-start victory drought with a superb effort at Miami on Sunday, yielding four hits over six scoreless innings to win for the first time since May 25. Dealing with bone spurs in his pitching elbow, Matz lost his previous three turns, although the Mets supplied him with a total of five runs in that span. Matz has allowed eight of his 11 homers in nine home starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mets 3B Jose Reyes (ribcage) is expected to sit out his fourth game in a row while OF Yoenis Cespedes (quad) could be out of the lineup for a few days.

2. Colorado entered the series 0-41 when trailing after eight innings.

3. Mets 2B Neil Walker has consecutive three-hit games after going 2-for-39 in his previous 11.

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (55-47) at Miami Marlins (55-47)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 29 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The St. Louis Cardinals can move a season-high nine games over .500 when they continue a four-game series against the host Miami Marlins on Friday night. St. Louis appears to be gearing up for a stretch run, pulling into a tie with Miami for the second wild card in the National League with Thursday's 5-4 victory.

The Cardinals improved to 8-3 in their last 11 games by beating Marlins ace Jose Fernandez in the series opener. Rookie shortstop Aledmys Diaz, who played on the same youth team as Fernandez in Cuba, homered, doubled and drove in three runs against his childhood neighbor in their first matchup in the majors. Miami second baseman Dee Gordon, who led the NL in batting last year, was hitless in four at-bats in his return from the lineup following an 80-game suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs. Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki delivered a pinch-hit double Thursday to move within two hits of 3,000.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Mike Leake (7-8, 4.24 ERA) vs. Marlins RH José Urena (1-2, 5.34)

Leake is coming off a brutal start in which he was battered for seven runs and a season-worst 12 hits in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He allowed one run in each of his previous two starts, striking out a combined 21 batters over 13 innings. Leake is 5-1 with a 1.33 ERA versus Miami, holding Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich and Adeiny Hechavarria to a combined 4-for-36.

Urena has acquitted himself well in two starts since he was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans, but has nothing to show for it. The 24-year-old Dominican was a hard-luck loser versus the New York Mets last time out, giving up one run and four hits over six innings. He went 5 2/3 innings in his previous turn at Philadelphia, allowing one run and four hits.

WALK-OFFS

1. St. Louis has homered in 18 of its last 19 games to push its season total to 140.

2. Marlins 3B Martin Prado is 6-for-11 with a homer, two doubles and four runs scored in the last three games.

3. Cardinals LF Matt Holliday needs two homers to reach 20 in a season for the 10th time.

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (47-57) at Atlanta Braves (35-67)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 29 - 7:35 PM EST
WHERE: Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Ryan Howard has terrorized the Atlanta Braves throughout his career, but it appears he has passed the torch to Maikel Franco as the visiting Philadelphia Phillies play the second contest of a four-game series Friday between the National League East rivals. Franco smashed a three-run homer in the first inning Thursday, his fifth homer in 10 outings against the Braves this season, as Philadelphia won the fifth consecutive game in the series.

Howard – who has 51 career homers in 176 career games against the Braves – did not play Thursday but his replacement at first base, rookie Tommy Joseph, followed Franco’s opening-frame blast with his 14th homer as the Phillies rolled to a 7-5 victory. Atlanta’s modest two-game winning streak ended thanks to allowing five runs in the first inning. First baseman Freddie Freeman had reached base in nine consecutive plate appearances (six hits, three walks) before an eighth-inning fly out. Third baseman Adonis Garcia is hitting .405 during his current 10-game hitting streak, but the Braves left 14 runners on base in the series opener to drop to 4-9 since the All-Star break.

TV: 7:35 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, FSN South (Atlanta)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Vince Velasquez (8-2, 3.34 ERA) vs. Braves RH Tyrell Jenkins (0-2, 6.17)

Velasquez has shined since coming to Philadelphia on Dec. 12 in the Ken Giles trade, using a solid slider-changeup-curve combination with a mid-90s fastball to average 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings. He gave up four runs on seven hits in a no-decision Sunday at Pittsburgh, after posting a 2.20 ERA in his previous six outings. Velasquez, who has made five starts since returning from a right biceps injury, gave up four runs on six hits in six innings May 12 in his only appearance against Atlanta this season.

Jenkins made a solid impression in his first two starts, but was hammered for seven runs on eight hits with five walks in 3 1/3 innings Sunday at Colorado. Control has been an issue for the 24-year-old through his first seven major-league appearances, walking 16 in 23 1/3 innings while posting a 1.89 WHIP and allowing six homers. Jenkins made his first career start at Philadelphia on July 6, giving up one run on four hits in 4 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Braves have allowed seven or more runs 31 times in 102 games.

2. Phillies RF Aaron Altherr, who broke his left wrist in spring training, went 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored in his season debut Thursday.

3. Atlanta CF Ender Inciarte extended his hitting streak to nine games with a ninth-inning single Thursday.

GAME: Kansas City Royals (49-52) at Texas Rangers (59-44)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 29 - 8:05 PM EST
WHERE: Globe Life Park in Arlington, Arlington, Texas
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Texas Rangers have struggled during July but have experienced success against a Kansas City team that is having an even more woeful month. Texas looks to defeat the visiting Royals for the fourth time in five meetings over the last eight days on Friday in the second contest of a four-game set.

Mitch Moreland went deep twice in Thursday's 3-2 victory over the Royals for his 10th career multi-homer performance as Texas improved to 8-15 on the month. Moreland has recorded five homers among his last nine hits and 16 on the season - seven shy of his career best registered on two occasions. Defending World Series champion Kansas City is just 7-17 in July - losing seven of nine - and All-Star Game MVP Eric Hosmer is a miserable 2-for-30 over his last eight games. Alex Gordon is emerging from a slump by going 4-for-8 over his last two games and is a robust 6-for-7 with a homer against scheduled Rangers starter A.J. Griffin.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Kansas City, FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Royals RH Edinson Volquez (8-8, 4.56 ERA) vs. Rangers RH A.J. Griffin (3-1, 4.06)

Volquez is making his second straight start against Texas amid speculation that the Rangers are interested in acquiring his services. He is 0-2 with a 6.33 ERA in four career starts against Texas but was solid on Sunday, when he gave up one run and seven hits in six innings. Volquez has struggled on the road this season with a 2-5 record and 5.72 ERA in eight starts.

Griffin has failed to pitch more than five innings in any of his six starts since returning from a shoulder injury. He received a no-decision against the Royals on Sunday, when he allowed one run and four hits in five frames, and is 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA in three career starts against Kansas City. Griffin allowed 11 runs in 10 innings over his last two turns prior to the better showing against the Royals.

WALK-OFFS

1. Royals C Salvador Perez (head cold) was a late scratch in the opener.

2. Texas optioned RHP Nick Martinez to Triple-A Round Rock to open up a roster spot for LHP Dario Alvarez, who was acquired from Atlanta on Wednesday.

3. Kansas City RHP Luke Hochevar was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday after tests displayed he is showing signs of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, a condition that compresses nerves and blood flow.

GAME: Chicago White Sox (50-52) at Minnesota Twins (38-63)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 29 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Chicago White Sox are trying to stay in wild-card contention in the American League as they continue an eight-game road trip with the first of three against the Minnesota Twins on Friday. Chicago dropped its last two to the crosstown-rival Cubs to fall two games below .500.

The White Sox had ripped off four consecutive victories before their offense ground to a halt, managing only one run and five hits in each of their last two setbacks. Melky Cabrera has hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games and is 11-for-25 against Ricky Nolasco, who is scheduled to start for the Twins in the series opener. Rookie Max Kepler homered and drove in a pair of runs to power Minnesota to a 6-2 victory over Baltimore, giving him eight blasts this month. The last-place Twins shipped All-Star shortstop Eduardo Nunez to San Francisco following Thursday's game for left-handed pitching prospect Adalberto Mejía.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, CSN Chicago, FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH José Quintana (8-8, 2.97 ERA) vs. Twins RH Ricky Nolasco (4-8, 5.40)

Quintana has turned in a pair of stellar outings since the All-Star break, but a collapse by the bullpen spoiled his bid for a fourth straight winning start. Nonetheless, the 27-year-old Colombian tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings of no-hit ball versus Detroit after allowing one run over six frames in his previous turn. Joe Mauer is 11-for-34 against Quintana, who is 2-1 versus the Twins this season.

Nolasco is coming off a wretched performance, lasting a season-low two innings while giving up six runs and six hits in a no-decision at Boston. He deserved a better fate versus Detroit in his previous turn, taking the loss despite allowing one run and three hits in six frames. He has permitted seven runs - including three homers on June 29 - in each of his two starts versus the White Sox this year.

WALK-OFFS

1. White Sox rookie SS Tim Anderson has hit safely in 30 of his 41 games played

2. Twins 2B Brian Dozier, riding a six-game hitting streak, is 9-for-40 with four homers off Quintana.

3. The White Sox placed INF Brett Lawrie (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled INF Carlos Sanchez from Triple-A Charlotte.

Preview: Pirates at Brewers

GAME: Pittsburgh Pirates (52-48) at Milwaukee Brewers (44-56)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 29 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Andrew McCutchen snapped out a slump with a big performance last time out and looks to carry that over when his Pittsburgh Pirates visit the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday to begin a three-game set. The former National League MVP went 3-for-5 with a homer and knocked in four runs during Wednesday’s 10-1 victory over Seattle after going without an RBI for nine straight games.

McCutchen and infielder Jung Ho Kang, who knocked in five runs the last two games after posting just two RBIs in the previous 19 contests, must both warm up if the Pirates are to climb back into playoff contention. Pittsburgh is 6-3 in its last nine games overall, has won four of six contests against Milwaukee this season and will see the Brewers 13 more times in the next two months. Milwaukee held off Arizona 6-4 on Thursday and has won four of seven on its 10-game homestand. The Brewers could be without slugger Ryan Braun, who was scratched from the lineup Thursday due to right side tightness.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Pittsburgh), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates LH Steven Brault (0-0, 2.25 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Junior Guerra (6-2, 2.85)

Brault makes his second major league start after going four innings in his debut on July 5 in a no-decision at St. Louis. The 24-year-old California native gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and a pair of walks while striking out five and throwing 82 pitches. Brault, who was acquired from Baltimore in the Travis Snider deal before the 2015 season, is 2-4 with a 2.15 ERA at Triple-A Indianapolis this season.

Guerra allowed two or fewer runs in five of his last six outings while posting three victories and one loss in which he surrendered only three runs. That stretch included six solid innings in a no-decision at Pittsburgh on July 19 when the Venezuelan gave up two runs and three hits while striking out six. The 31-year-old Guerra is 4-2 with a 2.42 ERA in eight home starts and is holding opponents to a .206 average overall.

WALK-OFFS

1. Milwaukee INF Hernan Perez belted a two-run homer Thursday and is 6-for-12 with three RBIs against the Pirates this season.

2. Pittsburgh LF Starling Marte is 7-for-14 with three RBIs in the last four contests and is 6-for-16 versus the Brewers in 2016.

3. Milwaukee 2B Scooter Gennett is 9-for-27 with a homer and six RBIs during a seven-game hitting streak.

GAME: Boston Red Sox (55-45) at Los Angeles Angels (46-56)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 29 - 10:05 PM EST
WHERE: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Boston right-hander Rick Porcello has the opportunity to move into a tie for the major-league lead in victories when the Red Sox visit the Los Angeles Angels on Friday in the second contest of a four-game set. Porcello has won seven straight decisions and his 13 victories are just two shy of his career high set in 2014 as a member of the Detroit Tigers.

Porcello is just one win behind Washington's Stephen Strasburg, Baltimore's Chris Tillman and the Chicago White Sox's Chris Sale in the victory leadership race. He will try to halt a Boston losing streak that reached four games Thursday when first baseman Hanley Ramirez made a bases-loaded throwing error in the bottom of the ninth inning that allowed two runs to score and hand the Angels a 2-1 victory. Los Angeles designated hitter Albert Pujols had two hits in the opener to improve to 7-for-19 over the past four games and his 28 RBIs in July are most in the majors. The Angels have won three of their past four games and are 9-4 since the All-Star break.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, NESN (Boston), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox RH Rick Porcello (13-2, 3.57 ERA) vs. Angels RH Tim Lincecum (2-4, 8.70 ERA)

Porcello has won each of his last five starts and six of his past seven in a strong bounce-back campaign from last season's 9-15 mark and 4.92 ERA. He has allowed two or fewer runs in five of his last eight outings and has walked a total of three batters over his past four turns. Porcello has traditionally struggled against the Angels, going 4-6 with a 6.82 ERA in 13 career starts and has had issues retiring Kole Calhoun (5-for-8, two homers).

Lincecum served up three homers and was torched for eight runs in 1 1/3 innings while losing to the Houston Astros in his last turn. The 32-year-old, who is 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA in two career starts versus Boston, is struggling with his velocity as he attempts to regain his once-stellar form. "It's tough, because you have games when you're throwing 84-87 (mph), and you prepared the same way as games when you're throwing 88-91," Lincecum told reporters. "And it's even on pitches where I'm not trying as hard as other pitches, when I throw my hardest and it's coming out like doo-doo."

WALK-OFFS

1. Red Sox SS Xander Bogaerts is 18-for-42 with 10 runs scored during a 10-game hitting streak.

2. Los Angeles INF Cliff Pennington (hamstring) is expected to come off the disabled list on Sunday.

3. Boston INF Aaron Hill, who is just 5-for-28 since being acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers, is 11-for-22 against Lincecum.

GAME: Arizona Diamondbacks (42-60) at Los Angeles Dodgers (57-45)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 29 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Los Angeles Dodgers continue their chase for the top spot in the National League West when they host the last-place Arizona Diamondbacks for the first of three games on Friday. The Dodgers, who have reportedly been busy in negotiations before the Aug. 1 trade deadline, are 31-19 at home but dropped two of three at Arizona just after the All-Star break.

Los Angeles trails San Francisco in the West and holds down the top wild-card spot after splitting a pair of interleague games with Tampa Bay to start the week. Kenta Maeda makes his fourth start against Arizona (1-1 in the first three) this season and faces fellow right-hander Zack Godley. Jean Segura has hit safely in 10 straight contests for the Diamondbacks, who have dropped five of seven on their 10-game road trip after losing 6-4 at Milwaukee on Thursday afternoon. Arizona outfielder Yasmany Tomas is 9-for-20 with 10 RBIs in the last five games overall, but is just 1-for-18 against the Dodgers this season.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Zack Godley (3-1, 5.88 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Kenta Maeda (9-7, 3.25)

Godley has won three of his four starts this season, and two of three in July despite permitting 13 runs and 24 hits over 15 2/3 innings combined. The 26-year-old has also made four relief appearances in 2016, including one against the Dodgers on June 15 when he retired the two batters he faced. Godley is 1-0 on the road this season, but has given up eight runs and 14 hits in 9 1/3 innings.

Maeda has alternated wins and losses over his last six outings after beating St. Louis on Saturday when he allowed two runs and five hits across 5 2/3 innings. The 28-year-old Japan native has yielded two or fewer runs in 12 of 20 starts and boasts 115 strikeouts in 113 2/3 innings. Segura is 4-for-8 versus Maeda, who owns a 4.02 ERA in three games against the Diamondbacks in 2016.

WALK-OFFS

1. Goldschmidt, who is 9-for-21 during a five-game hitting streak, is two behind Steve Finley (479) for second on the franchise’s all-time RBI list.

2. Los Angeles INF/OF Howie Kendrick has hit safely in 17 of the last 18 games and is 15-for-34 versus the Diamondbacks this season.

3. Arizona 3B Jake Lamb (bruised hand) is 5-for-7 with a homer versus Maeda, but has not started the last three games.

Preview: Nationals at Giants

GAME: Washington Nationals (60-42) at San Francisco Giants (59-43)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 29 - 10:15 PM EST
WHERE: AT&T Park, San Francisco, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Francisco Giants are hoping a new arrival and a few returning stars can help end a slide that has seen them go 2-10 since the All-Star break. Infielder Eduardo Nunez is set to make his San Francisco debut Friday as the Giants continue their four-game series against the visiting Washington Nationals, who extended their lead over Miami in the NL East to five games with Thursday’s 4-2 series-opening victory.

Nunez was batting .300 with 47 RBIs and 26 stolen bases before being acquired from Minnesota on Thursday for minor league pitching prospect Adalberto Mejia. The 29-year-old Nunez is expected to provide depth for a Giants team that has struggled without third baseman Matt Duffy (Achilles) and right fielder Hunter Pence, who could return from a torn hamstring as early as this weekend. Second baseman Joe Panik (concussion) returned from the disabled list Thursday to face the Nationals, whose search for relief pitchers likely intensified after closer Jonathan Papelbon allowed two baserunners and was pulled by manager Dusty Baker in the ninth inning of Thursday’s win. Shawn Kelley struck out Angel Pagan with the bases loaded to record his fifth save and could receive more opportunities in place of Papelbon, who has been scored on in each of his last three appearances.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Washington), NBC Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Nationals RH Max Scherzer (10-6, 2.92 ERA) vs. Giants RH Jeff Samardzija (9-6, 4.22)

Scherzer tossed seven innings for his third consecutive start Saturday while holding San Diego to two runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks. The 32-year-old has posted a 1.71 ERA with 91 strikeouts and 13 walks in his last 10 starts since June 1. Scherzer fell to 1-4 with a 6.85 ERA in five career starts against San Francisco after allowing six runs in three innings at AT&T Park on Aug. 14, 2015.

Samardzija yielded two home runs for the second consecutive start Sunday, when he surrendered five runs over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Yankees. The 31-year-old has allowed a total of 14 homers over his last nine starts and has struggled to rediscover his early-season form. Ryan Zimmerman has one hit in 19 at-bats against Samardzija, who is 2-3 with a 3.12 ERA in 12 career games (five starts) against the Nationals.

WALK-OFFS

1. Nationals RF Bryce Harper is mired in a 6-for-55 slump and batting .237 overall.

2. The Giants placed LHP Josh Osich (strained left forearm) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled LHP Matt Reynolds from Triple-A Sacramento.

3. Washington LF Jayson Werth extended his career-best on-base streak to 31 games — the longest current run in the majors — by going 1-for-5 on Thursday.

Preview: Reds at Padres

GAME: Cincinnati Reds (40-61) at San Diego Padres (44-58)
DATE/TIME: Friday, July 29 - 10:40 PM EST
WHERE: Petco Park, San Diego, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Diego Padres attempt to set a National League record by homering in a 26th consecutive contest Friday when they kick off a nine-game homestand with the first of three against the Cincinnati Reds. San Diego (44-58) equaled the NL standard after belting three home runs in an 8-4 victory over Toronto on Wednesday that capped a 3-7 road trip and improved it to 11-14 during the streak while getting closer to the major league record of 27 set by Texas in 2002.

"Hitting the ball out of the ballpark 25 straight days - it's a borderline fluke,'' Padres manager Andy Green told reporters. "It's just one of those things that happens. We don't think too much about it." Cincinnati boasts its own home run streak, but it is personal as Jay Bruce - the subject of trade rumors with Monday's deadline approaching - tied a club record by going deep in five straight games after connecting off Madison Bumgarner with the tiebreaking hit in Wednesday's 2-1 victory at San Francisco. Bruce, who is 8-for-21 with six home runs and 13 RBIs in his last five games, has played a major role in the Reds (40-61) winning eight of 12 contests since the All-Star break. Edwin Jackson has recorded a pair of quality starts in his first two appearances with San Diego and opposes Brandon Finnegan, who has not recorded an out in the sixth inning in any of his last four turns.

TV: 10:40 p.m. ET, FSN San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds LH Brandon Finnegan (5-8, 4.93 ERA) vs. Padres RH Edwin Jackson (1-1, 4.30)

Finnegan yielded six runs and seven hits - including three home runs - in five innings of a 9-8 loss to Arizona on Sunday. The 23-year-old Texan fell to 2-2 with a 10.90 ERA and 10 home runs allowed in his last four starts. Prior to the rough patch, Finnegan permitted three runs, five hits and three walks while striking out eight in 6 2/3 innings of a 3-0 loss to San Diego on June 25 in his only appearance versus the Padres.

Jackson received a no-decision after yielding two runs, six hits and three walks in six innings of San Diego's 3-2 loss at Washington on Saturday. The 32-year-old made his Padres debut at home July 17, carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning and allowing three runs (two earned), one hit and five walks in 6 1/3 innings of a 5-3 victory over San Francisco. Joey Votto is 9-for-22 with two home runs and Bruce is 6-for-23 with zero homers and seven strikeouts against Jackson, who is 4-3 with a 3.99 ERA in 10 games (nine starts) versus Cincinnati.

WALK-OFFS

1. San Diego took three of four last month in Cincinnati with the series finale - a 3-0 loss June 26 - marking the last game the Padres did not hit a home run.

2. Seven Reds have homered in five straight games with the last being Devin Mesoraco in 2014.

3. Atlanta (1998), Detroit (1994) and the New York Yankees (1941) have also homered in 25 straight games.
