Tampa Bay vs. Seattle
Pick: Tampa Bay -116

For the second straight season, I can make a pretty clear cut case that the Rays are better than their WL record indicates. In 2016, they were doomed by a league-worst record in one-run games. This season, they haven't been much better in that department (just 4-9), but at least they're two games above .500 overall. There are also signs of better luck being on the horizon. Such as Wednesday's come from behind effort at Texas. (I had 'em!). That made it six wins in the last eight games and w/ a YTD run differential of +26, I view this as a legit playoff contender moving forward.

Meanwhile, Seattle is not a team I'd be buying stock in right now. Granted, they did just take three of four from Colorado. But they're at a disadvantage tonight having played Thursday while the Rays were off. Christian Bergmann is the starter here and I certainly don't believe him to be capable of repeating his last performance, that being seven shutout innings at Boston. Consider that in his start previous to that one, he allowed 10 runs in four innings and that came in a NL park (Washington). Bergmann is a low strikeout pitcher, which is never a good sign. In three of four starts this year, he's registered 2 K's or fewer. That's bad.

Jake Odorizzi will get the baseball for TB. While the team didn't win either of his last two starts, both were quality outings where the offense failed to show up. In seven of his last eight turns, Odorizzi has allowed 2 ER or fewer, which is really impressive. The Rays' offense has been a lot better of late (6.0 rpg over the last 7 days), so support should not be an issue here, especially against Bergmann. Note that in the month of May, the Rays offense led all of MLB in home runs w/ 52! Odorizzi has a solid 2.35 ERA in four career starts vs. the M's.

MLB | Red Sox vs Orioles
Play on: Orioles +120 at betonline

10* FREE MLB PICK (Orioles +120)

Baltimore is getting zero respect here at home against division rival Boston. The Orioles won the series opener yesterday 7-5 as a dog and are now 18-8 record at home this season, which includes a 3-1 record at home against these Red Sox. Boston is sending out reigning Cy Young winner Rick Porcello, but he's 3-6 with a 4.21 ERA in 11 starts and has a 4.74 ERA in his last 3 outings. Not to mention he's allowed a ridiculous 31 hits over his last 3 starts. Baltimore will send out Alec Asher, who has been hit or miss in 3 starts this season, but he was sharp in a start at Boston back on 5/2, allowing just 3 runs over 6 innings. This will also be Asher's first start at home, where I would expect he would have a little more success. Give me the Orioles +120!

Free Pick on Indians -

I really like the value here with Cleveland as a short road favorite against the Royals in Friday's series opener. Cleveland is 4-1 over their last 5 and are swinging a hot bat, scoring 33 runs over this recent stretch. There's a good chance they keep it going here against Jason Vargas, who has a 6.32 ERA and 1.723 WHIP over his last 3 starts and a 4.25 ERA and 1.299 WHIP in 15 career starts against the Indians.

Cleveland counters with Josh Tomlin, who is coming off a sensational start against these same Royals in his last outing. Tomlin held KC to just 1 run on 6 hits (0 walks) in a full 9 innings of work. That continued an impresive run for Tomlin against these Royals, as he's allowed 2 or less run in 6 or more innings of work in each of his last 6 starts against Kansas City. Tomlin is also working on an impressive 16-5 run over his last 21 starts against division opponents. Take Cleveland!

We have an interesting weekend set in San Diego, as the National League West-leading Colorado Rockies are in town to visit the last-place Padres.

And my free pick for tonight is on the Padres, who have won four straight games - the first time they've strung together four in a row since 2015 - not to mention seven of their last 10.

The Padres and Rockies have split their first six games of the season, so there should be enough confidence on San Diego's part, to pull off a win in the series-opener.

I'm taking a shot with this comp winner, as the Pads get it done over Colorado.

Now about this complimentary winner

My free winner for Friday night takes us to the Lone Star State, where I'm playing the Texas Rangers over the Houston Astros. And in this game I want you listing Yu Darvish over Dallas Keuchel.

Let's start with Keuchel, who may lead the bigs in wins and ranks second in ERA and opponent's batting average, but also seems to have a problem against this team.

The bearded southpaw is a disappointing 5-7 with a 4.24 ERA in his career against Texas - including 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA in four starts last year.

He could run into trouble in this marquee matchup, as the streaking Astros have a 12-game lead over the two-time defending American League West champion Rangers.

And since the Astros took three of four from Texas in Houston to start the month of May, revenge is on the brain, too. Keuchel didn't face Texas in the four-game series earlier this season, so the Rangers may go off tonight.

I'd rather side with the home pitcher, as Darvish has labored for eight quality starts in 11 outings, and rolls in with a 4-4 mark and 3.51 ERA in 12 career starts against the Astros. He is in triple-revenge against Houston, with a 0-3 mark in his last seven starts against the Astros.

Tonight you're going to see Darvish hit the corners with his pitches, just as he's done with 11.3 percent of his pitches this season, the second highest rate among starting pitchers.

Play the home underdog and list both.

4* RANGERS (Darvish over Keuchel)

Bonus Play: Take Houston (#971)

Yes, May is in the rear view mirror now. But what the Astros did in May has all the makings of continuing right here into June!

Houston went 22-7 in May, with a remarkable 14 of those 22 wins coming by three runs or more. They entered June ranked #1 in MLB in batting average, slugging percentage and OPS; #2 in on-base percentage. Their pitching has been every bit as good, Top 5 in baseball in both traditional (ERA) and advanced metric (FIP) stats.

Oftentimes, after a team puts together a huge run like the one the Astros have been on, we can and should expect some regression – after all, Houston isn’t going to win 70% of their games for the full season. But this Carlos Correa quote makes me think that the Astros aren’t about to take their foot off the gas pedal here, especially against hated in-state rival Texas: “I think we’re in a good position right now but I’m not going to get comfortable. We’re going to have to try for more. We’re going to try to be 30 games over .500 if we can.”

Astros starter Dallas Keuchel is still considered a ‘home/road dichotomy’ pitcher in the broader betting markets; hence the relatively cheap price to support Houston today. In 2015 and 2016, Keuchel went a combined 10-15 on the highway with an ERA approaching 5.00. This year, in five road starts, Keuchel is 4-0 with a 2.57 ERA and the Astros have won all five of those games; clear evidence that this young hurler is maturing into a savvy veteran. It’s surely worth noting that the last time Keuchel faced this Rangers lineup he threw a complete game shutout.

Yu Darvish has been excellent for the Rangers this season, and the Rangers are 8-3 with him on the hill. But Darvish has shown some regression in recent starts; dealing with high pitch counts. Behind him, the Rangers bullpen has been problematic, to put it mildly. Manager Jeff Bannister, talking about his bullpen: “It’s obviously disappointing. However, these are the guys we have, and we need to find a way to get these guys going.”

Texas ranks #29 out of 30 MLB teams with a 5.00 bullpen ERA and they rank #28 in strikeout percentage. That’s a very bad combo against an Astros lineup that has just pounded out 48 runs in their last four ballgames, red hot right now. Take the Astros.

Play: Under 9

I kind of like what I've seen from young Jerad Eickhoff lately. He has struck out 16 to just three walks in his last three starts against three decent lineups. I think that he will have a solid outing here against a Giants team that is in a letdown spot after an emotional series with Washington. They won't be up for this game at all. Ty Blach will likely take the ball, and he has rung up four straight quality starts, going at least seven innings in each one and posting just a 2.50 ERA. And those games have come against some really good lineups like the Dodgers and Cubs. Philadelphia is hitting just .230 against lefties this year and they really just aren't hitting, period. This is one of the worst lineups in the league. And it is not as if the Giants are any better. The Giants are last in the league in runs per game, OPS and home runs, and they are second-worst in the league in batting average. I think the relative obscurity of the two young starters will help keep this total up. But I see a game that neither team really wants to play and a game that should end up somewhere around 4-2.

Cleveland at Kansas City
Play: Kansas City

Kansas City and Cleveland have split the six games they have played so far with each team winning a series 2-1 on the road. The Royals have been struggling this season in large part to them not taking care of their business at home like they have done in recent years, as they are just 12-12 at Kaufmann Stadium so far this season. Someone who hasn't had any problems there this season is Jason Vargas, who is 3-1 with a 2.05 ERA in 5 starts. He has kept the Indians off the board in two starts this season as he has allowed just 2 earned runs over 11.2 innings. Josh Tomlin will be on the bump for the Indians and he is 1-2 with a 5.25 ERA on the road this year and he has allowed at least 4 runs in two out of his last three starts. I think Kansas City picks up the win in game 1 of this series.
