Game: Chicago Cubs at Florida Marlins Jul 31 2009 7:10PM
Prediction: under
Reason: The Cubs saw each of their last three games produce double-digits in combined runs. Those games were at Wrigley Field against the Astros. I expect to see much better pitching for this evening's series opener at Florida.

Harden gets the call for the Cubs. After a uncharacteristically slow start, he's been dominant recently. In fact, over his last three appearances, he's gone 2-0 with an extremely stingy 0.95 ERA. During that 19-inning stretch, he's recorded 21 K's while issuing just two free passes. Not surprisingly, all three of those games stayed below the total.

While Harden has had some trouble during the afternoon and at Wrigley, he's been excellent both on the road and under the lights. In seven evening starts, he's gone 5-1 with a 2.23 ERA. In seven road starts, he's gone 4-1 with a 2.03 ERA. The 'under' was 5-1-1 in those games and is 6-1-1 his last eight road starts, dating back to last season.

Volstad goes for Marlins and he's allowed four earned runs or less in seven straight starts, four of which stayed below the total. Looking back to last season and we find that he's allowed four earned runs or less in 16 of his last 17 home starts. It's also worth noting that Volstad has a very solid 2.84 ERA in three career starts vs. the Cubs. He allowed two earned runs in all three of those games, lasting a minimum of six innings in each.

With Volstad's consistency and Harden currently in top form, I feel the 'under' is well worth a look.

Game: Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles Jul 31 2009 7:05PM
Prediction: Boston Red Sox
Reason: Boston starter John Smoltz has a better than 4 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio in his last 3 starts. Boston is 24-10 vs. AL East teams. The Red Sox are 32-15 in Game 1 of a series and they are 4-1 their last 5 Friday games. Baltimore starter Jeremy Guthrie has more walks than strikeouts in his last 3 starts. Baltimore is 17-47 vs. AL East teams. The Orioles are 0-8 in Game 1 of a series and they are 6-15 on Friday. PLAY ON BOSTON - (Smoltz vs. Guthrie)

Game: Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles Jul 31 2009 7:05PM
Prediction: Boston Red Sox
Reason: Play On: Boston w/Smoltz vs. Guthrie.
Note: The Red Sox and Orioles battle in the opener of an A.L. East Division series in Baltimore tonight when John Smoltz takes on Jeremy Guthrie at Camden Yards. While Smoltz has dropped 5 of his 6 team starts with the Bosox this season he has registered a terrific 5 walk/28 strikeout ratio in those games. With Guthrie in struggling form (6-12 his last 18 team starts, including 2-6 at home) and just 2-7 lifetime in his career team starts against the Red Sox, look for Boston to improve to 16-3 in the last 19 games in this series here tonight.

Game: Toronto Blue Jays at Oakland Athletics Jul 31 2009 10:05PM
Prediction: Toronto Blue Jays
Reason: As of Thursday night it seemed the Blue Jays weren't going to make any deals so expect a relaxed bunch on Friday night in Oakland. The Jays get Richmond back on the mound and they have won 5 of his last 7 road starts. In his last 5 starts as a road dog they are 4-1. The Jays are 7-3 in his last 10 starts vs. a team with a losing record. The A's are 2-6 in their last 8 games as a home favorite. Oakland has lost 7 of Braden's last 9 starts. In his last 5 home starts the A's are 1-4. The A's are 3-13 in Bradents last 16 starts as a favorite. The Jays have won 10 of the last 12 meetings. Play on the Toronto Blue Jays +.
