I bet blows to the head caused depression then suicide................Sux

You called it, two days before the news reported his suicide. Nice call, I guess.....

Allegedly, Duerson sent a text to a family member shortly before he shot himself asking that his brain be donated for research to determine if he suffered from "chronic traumatic encephalopathy", otherwise known as dementia puglistica or "Punch Drunk" syndrome. (I see the same thing was posted in Post #19, my apologies for the duplication.)

As a member of the Notre Dame family, I pray for him and his family. RIP.

You all wait and see. His family will give the NFL permission to examine his brain. Unfortunately, his brain will be battered. They will also find that the continued banging of his head from football hits caused brain damage, depression then ultimately suicide.........

You all need to watch the HBO special on NFL concussions. Some of the older players from the 60's and 70's can't even feed themselves. All their wives are furious with the NFL because in the past they took no ownership. They are now realizing the damage the head smacking does.....

I have nothing against football. Love the game played it my whole life. Does not change the fact that when you have a 300 lb man running into another 300 lb man, as fast as they can, that something has got to give.......

If anyone can find a link to that HBO special or maybe a web site that has it, I would really really like to see it again.

How do you know how much despair he was in? Were you able to walk in his shoes? I'm sorry man this post screams ignorance of human biology. It is a fact that players, especially those that played before measures were taken to prevent brain damage, suffer brain damage playing college and pro football. In fact there was a safety who shot himself because he was so depressed. They examined his brain and said that it was basically mush and that his suicide was a direct result of collisions on the football field and the depression that resulted from those collisions.

Even if a guy has not played football, every person is born with different brain chemicals than any other person. People are born clinically depressed every day, it's very common. Just like people are born with a unique look about them, even more diverse is the combination of brain chemicals you are born with that make up your reality. This is probably way over your head but your comment is just classless. You have not one clue what that man was going through. None.

Suicide is not a direct result of brain injury. Suicide could result from depression caused by a brain injury.

If a guy has an innoperable brain tumor and commits suicide the tumor didn't cause the suicide. The tumor could've caused depression which in turn may have caused a guy to commit suicide.

Today, scientists announced that Duerson's brain tissue showed "moderately advanced" evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a dementia-like brain disease afflicting athletes exposed to repeated brain trauma.

Just read this on the CNN site

"Dave Duerson had classic pathology of CTE and no evidence of any other disease," said Dr. Ann McKee, a neuropathologist with the Bedford VA Medical Center, and co-director of the Boston University School of Medicine Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy. "He had severe involvement of areas that control judgment, inhibition, impulse control, mood and memory."

CTE has been found in the brains of 14 of 15 former NFL players thus far studied at the center. Their cases share a common thread -- repeated concussions, sub-concussive blows to the head, or both. The picture beginning to emerge from these cases is that trauma could be causing brain damage.

We are all gonna see this happen a lot more often. Don't get me wrong my kid is the starting quarterback and safety for his 8th grade football team, I support football 100%. I don't know what to say because without the hitting football is nothing more than soccer. Men running around as fast as they can and not allowed to hit each other...lol
