Interesting read. At the same time, let's be honest, it's not shocking that it "made sense" to you. Cohen makes some great points, but let's not pretend this is anything other than an opinion piece, meant to support President Obama's handling of Putin, by a fellow at The Century Foundation(a liberal think tank).

I agree with your assessment, it was just another perspective on the topic.

One thing you can’t question Putin on is love for Mother Russia. He wants what’s best for his country and will do whatever he can to bring it back to a world power.

On the other hand you have Obama.

Made sense to me

Ukraine is bankrupt. It has wavered on the cusp for some time. However, it is about to suffer the cruelest indignity: discovering that Western politicians who promised prosperity have been encouraging the IMF to deliver a leveraged poisoned chalice.

Putin has proven himself to be prudent, meticulous, and careful. He has the patience to wait for Ukraine to implode on its own.

Putin coolly picks his time. Saw it with Georgia and now here. In the end, imo he'll get his result- a govt that is not pro-west, prevent it from joining EU and NATO. Keeping Ukraine under Russian influence-- much of Russia gas lines run through the Ukraine .Whomever has significant influence over the Ukraine also has partial control over the output of said gas lines. He's already got his port. Get it all done without the use of body bags? would be impressive

USA's shere of influence has shrunk. Couldn't get any support at Syria . Here? He went to Saudi Arabia left empty handed. Now a g7 meeting coming up...


all the while, Putin is calling a friend. That friend is, economically crazy powerful. So he's turning to them for a helping hand...
