Completly different situation. In 2001, the senate started a 50-50 tie, and then Jeffords jumped to the left and gave the dems a majority. The GOP won back the senate in 2003, but from then to 2007 only had a small majority, with them having a seat count in the low 50's. The democrats were able to throw up many road blocks and peel off a few GOP votes.
We're looking at the possiblity of the democrats having a filibuster proof majority in the senate. They'll be able to do what ever they want.
They controlled Congress with a sitting President in the not to distant past.
They gave us the Republican revolution of 1994.
