Before the collision, the ship’s crew notified authorities that the vessel had lost power. That “mayday” allowed Maryland Transportation Authority Police on the highway above to prevent many cars from driving onto the bridge just before the catastrophe.


“These people are heroes,” Gov. Wes Moore said in a morning news conference. “They saved lives last night.”


Moore added that there was no evidence that the collision was a terrorist attack.

I heard what I judged to be a credible cargo ship captain who had commandeered like ships in that very harbor answer reporter questions re the accident. I didn't hear all the questions that I would have liked to have heard but he did indicate that from the visual evidence that we all saw in the video, lights going on and off; thick black smoke from the stack that it did appear to be an accident, that can happen to like ships. The difference is that when they have such power problems they usually happen on the open sea and there is no danger to anyone or anything else while the problem is being solved and corrected. This power outage happened at precisely the wrong time in the wrong place.
