Bookies are simply brokers who hold the funds for gamblers for a fee which is the juice. Bettors are gambling Vs other bettors not the bookie. The bookie isn't gambling. For example say you met a guy at a bar and he said the Packers will beat the Bears. You say not a chance..I love the Bears ..The other guy says yeah how much you want to bet ? So you bet him $500..but who's going to hold the money ? How do you know the guy will pay you ? That's where bookies come in...They take the action for a 10% fee and will pay the winner. Also these days plenty of exchanges are around where you can make offers and have other gamblers accept for a small commission of 1% This takes the bookie element out of it..Either way Gamblers are gambling Vs Gamblers. Some sports books though do scummy things like stiff and deal dual lines etc..That's a entire different story though.
