I could maybe go along with letting my 14 year old go fishing with his buddies if it was a lake and i lived semi close to it and kids had cell phones and crap. To me it sounds like these boys were allowed to take a 19 foot boat out into the ocean by themselves. and some reports are saying they may have been headed to the bahamas. seriously, there is not a single chance i'd let a boy that young do that. Right off I live here and you have to be pretty careful even taking a 19 foot boat out into the ocean. It's not like a lake where the waves are 1-2 foot.

I don't know the answer to this but can you legally operate a boat at that age?

In Florida I do know the age required to operate a boat is 14. However, I'm not sure if that means you can operate a boat by yourself or if an adult is supposed to be with you. Either way this is crazy. In fairness to the parents, maybe they told the boys to stay in a certain area and they just went anyway.

My brother has a 28 foot fishing boat with two engines we go out on sometimes and even that boat can be somewhat sketchy going out into the ocean. A 19 foot single engine boat in the ocean is not a very big boat. And i'd certainly never take that small of a boat out very far. I only say this because I'm assuming most of people on this forum don't live a mile from the ocean like I do and are more familiar with boats on small lakes, where a 19 foot boat is a pretty good sized boat. In the Atlantic, a 19' boat is small.

A 19 footer is perfect for Intracoastal waterways and that's bout it. Anything going More than a mile off the coast has to have 2 motors for me.

how far (boys and rescue) do they think $100 of gas is gonna take them. Burn through that in no time, especially playing with the throttle to fight waves. I don't know why they think they could make it to the Bahamas or SC?!?

As a Coast Guard officer, I can tell you this thing would have (should have) been called off a long time ago if not for the news coverage. The CG doesn't like negative publicity so they are continuing the active searches. Search and Rescue cases like this rarely end well.

Exactly my thought. If I can't see the shore then the boat better have two engines or I'm not on it.
