If your paper work is in the process you are given a piece of paper, that paper allows you to stay here, trust me on this one, have seen it happen before....
Also feds can come get my ass, i aint gringo and I would love for them to give me a free flight home to Spain. LOL

Buddy. FYI:
that paper allows you to stay in the country, but I doesn't allows you to work legally.
That is the reason immigration is not going to Gringo's houses, they are going to the places they are suspected to be working illegally. That offence thanks to the new immigration law past on august of last year is cause of deportation and a 1 million colones fine ($2000 usd) for the employer.
A person deemed for deportation can be surrendered to their local authorities at the port of entrie, in other words if they catch a gringo at a sportsbook working without work permit or residence, they get a deportation order and put on detention at the immigration detention center located at Zapote while appealing the order, if the order stands they are put in an airplane and at that point is where the feds come up, if the airline is of american flag.
that is why all gringos were told to go home until further notice without pay.
