Homer Simpson stuffs his face with doughnuts, cheeseburgers and, yes, pizza. Now he has finally settled the food fight between the pizza heavyweights: Chicago deep dish versus New York-style thin crust.
In a "Simprovised" episode Sunday, the animated Fox show had Homer Simpson take live viewer questions for the first time in 27 seasons for the East Coast and West Coast airings. To prove he was live, he lobbed a zinger and said Drake was terrible on "Saturday Night Live" the night before.
Somehow, the only food question focused on pizza. Mmm ... pizza. "I prefer Chicago deep dish because I like Italian better than Chinese," Simpson said.
The pizza question wasn't the first one Chicagoan George Quiroga wanted to ask. He planned to ask, for his 10-year-old daughter, about the Simpsons returning to the big screen.
"Originally, she wanted to ask because she, like a lot of fans, is very curious as to when they'll do another movie," said Quiroga, 45, who lives in the Montclare neighborhood on the Northwest Side. He has watched "The Simpsons" since it was a segment on "The Tracey Ullman Show" in the late 1980s. Now his two children watch it with him.
The pizza question was his backup. Plan B went into effect when he was told someone else was asking the movie question. Ultimately, that one never got asked on live TV.
"Homer, we know, loves food. Knowing Dan Castellaneta (who is the voice of Homer Simpson) is from Chicago, knowing he was from here, I targeted a question specifically that I thought would elicit a pretty funny response," he said.

His call finally got through after 72 tries. After being on hold for 15 minutes, he went on the air to ask his question and waited for a response. "He did not fail at all. Homer's answer was pretty hilarious," Quiroga said.
Aside from food, Simpson answered whether he would move to Canada if Donald Trump is elected president, revealed his best hangover cure and told what car he drives. He also gave tips on how to make it look like you're hard at work when you're really taking a nap.
Simpson knows his pizza. On the show, he has eaten pizza while driving. He ordered a pizza to be delivered to a courtroom while fighting over an all-you-can-eat restaurant deal. And as a baby at the hospital, he was spotted chomping down on pizza in the nursery.
Take it from Homer, the eating machine, and count this as a win for Chicago.
