When I quit drinking I lost 50lbs. My clothes fit loose now and the other day I was on the corner exercising my arthritic hands when 2 kids came up and beat the shit outta me.

Something about flashing gang signs.

Geezus Wully, may have to put you on suicide watch.

Same here for me, last year after having 2 close friends check out (in their mid-40's).

Hardest thing to quit is smoking. Quit the sugars, processed foods, and high carbs. Find myself now looking at the content of everything I buy.

Like Tiz I eat whole grain breads. Ezekiel, or Food for Life multi-whole grain breads. Whole grain pasta. If I want something sweet, like coffee, it's a bit of honey.

No egg yolks, very lean cuts of meat (no hamburger, ever), lots of veggies, some fruit, and a little whiskey.

Salt seems to be the one ingredient that is added to everything, so it's extra hard to cut down on that.

No ice cream, but rather frozen yogurt that isn't ladened with sugar.

Diet soda with Splenda goes with the whiskey.

Watch the breakfast cereals, they load even the healthy looking stuff with refined sugar.

Refined sugar is the worst thing ever introduced to humankind.

Lost 10% of my body weight in a couple months, mostly the excess body fat. Waist and belly look like they did back when I was 18 now. Still feel like crap as body has the yearning for crap food. I see a Big mac and start to salivate, but stand firm on my new principles.

My sister did even better. She lost a bunch of weight....they adhere to the Weight Watchers, points program. I was amazed the last time I saw her.

You want candy? Eat some banana chips or some dried fruit.

Egg whites are good to eat. You need to cut out the yolk which raises your LDL (the bad type) cholesterol. Whole grain breads are an essential staple of my diet. I don't know what you are talking about here. I'm not close minded, and I look forward to your reasoning on this one.

In my opinion, from what I have read about the latest research on eggs, they are fine in moderation. The yolk is so packed with nutrients that I can't think of a food that is better for you.

Again..in my opinion I think you are talking about the old cholesterol diet model which now seems outdated from the new information available.

Cholesterol isn't a very good indicator of heart disease, it is not predictive of heart attacks or problems. It used to be assumed to be the trigger but its more about the small LDL,triglycerides and inflammation.

According to actual food studies in which they track blood samples after eating certain foods...egg yolks lower the bad cholesterol and raise the good. In fact, most saturated fats do the same thing.

You want fats in moderation, its the carbs (wheat) that skyrocket small LDL particles...and thats what directly fuels plaque in the coronary arteries.

This gets complicated I will admit, but that is my best current understanding. If you are interested in some very good information from a doctor with a reputation for reversing heart disease without drugs read about Dr. Davis Track your Plaque program.

I can't recommend this enough for a common sense approach to diet, weight loss and disease prevention. Dr Davis is a practicing cardiologist in Milwaukee, and uses his experience and results with over 4000 patients.

He has a BIG problem with most healthcare only treating symptoms...and then only using drugs. He thinks its a racket and I think he is right on.

His approach is common sense prevention, diet, exercise, and primarily Vitamin D and fish oil.

Take a look at his blog...I can't recommend it enough.

I quit the beer a few years ago & I was starting to get a little bit of a beer gut I was 158 lbs at 5'8" since ive slimmed back down to 144lbs Im very lucky to have been blessed with a metabolism even at 50 where I can eat just about anything I want & not gain weight...I really feel sorry for some of the guys on the forum that struggle with their weight but I have no sympathy for some of the people I see at McDonalds (real fatasses) ordering triple cheesburg happy meals with double fries & a vanilla shake & a fudge sundae for dessert & we've all seen that while were standing in line or sometimes you see severely obese people at Golden Corral pigging out on the fatty stuff at the buffet & you can tell they just sit around & watch TV all day & get no excercise.

Large Versus Small LDL
HEART CURRENTS BLOG
A Cross Section of a Typical LDL-Cholesterol Molecule

Large vs. small LDL

It is now a rare person who does not have at least some proportion of their LDL cholesterol as small particles. I estimate that, of the people who come to the office or report their data on the Track Your Plaque website, 90% have at least 40-50% small LDL particles. Some people have 100% small LDL particles.

The nutritional approach for small vs. large LDL differs. Small LDL particles are most sensitive to carbohydrate intake; large LDL particles are more sensitive to saturated fats. The conventional "heart healthy" diet that restricts saturated fat reduces large LDL but exerts no effect on small LDL. Thus, a diet that is restricted in saturated fat and weighed more heavily with "healthy whole grains" triggers small LDL particles. Followers of the conversations here recognize that small LDL particles are flagrant triggers for coronary plaque; they have, in fact, become the number one most common cause for heart disease in the U.S. When you have lipoproteins tested, you can therefore gauge the likely result obtained when specific dietary changes are made.

Follow the low saturated fat advice, large LDL will drop modestly, but small LDL skyrockets. Eliminate sugars, wheat, and cornstarch and you will see small LDL plummet (along with total LDL). As an aside, my personal observation is that the "need" for statin cholesterol drugs can be reduced dramatically by paying attention to this important LDL size distinction.
