As IL and Pancho said, this is true
However, there are some teams that are really bad SU that do well against the spread...SD about 7-8 years ago comes to mind when they had a horrid offense but one of the top Ds in the league. I think they had a 1 win season but covered a substantial amount of games due to their D keeping the score low. I will try to dig that up if I have time.
