Minny is 2-19 there last 21 on grass. Washington has the #2 ranked defense and Minny hasn't scored more than 7 pts offensively in the second half of their last four or five games. Washingtons offense will welcome the sight of the Vikings defense as have most qb's including Chicago's Huchinson sp?

Last, the real flu, not stomach flu, is running rampant in Minny. Culppeper and two other starters were sent home yesterday. I have it and so will many of the rest of the team by game time. This is a real ass kicker and it wears you out.

New topic. How about Houston over Cleveland. Two teams going in opposite directions. Clev sucks....

Expect reserves to play Chiefs

Schottenheimer coy about lineups

By Kevin Acee
STAFF WRITER

December 30, 2004

Doug Flutie is the Chargers' backup quarterback for the playoffs, and his role will be at least that significant Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Third-string quarterback Philip Rivers also will play against the Chiefs.

Drew Brees might not play at all.

At various points yesterday, coach Marty Schottenheimer said as much about his quarterback contingencies and also said he had not decided exactly how he might use his personnel in the regular-season finale.

While the result of Sunday's game is wholly inconsequential to the Chargers' pending playoff pursuit, Schottenheimer is intent on victory – with allowances for caution and preparedness.

"Winning this football game is very important to us," he said. "To be 12-4 would be a significant achievement. At the same time we've got to take a look at the broader picture. I think it's quite possible we will rotate some people through."

Schottenheimer plans to play backups at almost every position.

"We are trying to balance the total picture," Schottenheimer said. "As I look at it, we're hopeful this season has a number of games yet to go. I think we can be well served by giving people a chance to play – not at the expense of winning, but by the same token we will be better served down the road if we have injuries."

The avoidance of injuries and the fact the Chargers' first playoff game is less than a week after Sunday's game (Saturday, Jan. 8, at Qualcomm Stadium) are also factors in Schottenheimer's plans.

To that end, there is a chance running back LaDainian Tomlinson will not play against the Chiefs.

"I haven't made that decision," Schottenheimer said. "But it is a possibility."

Such ambiguity is Schottenheimer's way, not making a decision until he has to, not wanting to give anything away.

But the coy coach allowed at one point yesterday: "I haven't made a decision on how much Drew will play, if at all."

And as to whether Flutie is immediately behind Brees on the depth chart, Schottenheimer said, "I would have to say that he is."

Rivers, the club's rookie first-round draft pick, was the No. 2 quarterback most of the season, although he was listed at No. 3 the past two games. With the playoffs approaching, Schottenheimer appears to have decided that the veteran is the better option in the event Brees goes down. And he wants Flutie, 42, to be ready.

"Doug has not played a whole lot of football of late," Schottenheimer said. "The good Lord forbid we go into a playoff game and we have an early injury at that position, I'm going to feel a lot more comfortable if he's had some (recent) time under center."

Said Flutie: "The more work I get the more comfortable I am all the time."

All three quarterbacks said they had not been informed of Schottenheimer's plan. Based on their workload yesterday, however, they see what is coming.

"The fact is," Brees said of Flutie and Rivers, "those guys are going to play."

Brees estimated he took slightly more than 50 percent of the snaps in yesterday's practice, compared with the 80 percent he usually takes. Flutie and Rivers took more than normal.

"It was fun to actually throw the ball to receivers again," Flutie said. "I haven't thrown the ball to anybody in awhile."

Flutie carefully added: "I have no clue what's going on . . . I just work here. I'm doing what I'm told. If I'm told to get the water, that's my job. If I'm told to be No. 2, I'll be ready."

DOGS WON 123...FAV WON 117

POINTS THAT MATTER 42 GAMES OUT OF 238 ...18%
(5 MORE THAT COULD OF MATTER)

DOGS WINNING STRAIGHT-UP...81 OUT OF 238..34%

Ace - You are using figures out of 248 games. I'm just wondering where the other 212 games are at? Is this with a certain spread?? Can someone clarify for me? Thanks.

Ace:

I personally want to thank you for that UConn pick last weekend. I had a "less than stellar" weekend and I played your bet for 3 units (I rarely play for more than 2 units per game). You helped me dig out of a hole.

Thanks. :103631605

Ace, you said earlier that your numbers are really sharp in the playoffs. Is your record pretty sharp for the playoffs? Can't wait for your SB play.

Ace, The Rams have struggled but remain competitive at home. The Jets have scored 13 or less points four of last six games, 17 or less six of last eight games. In the Dome, what is your prediction for final score? Thanks. Best of luck.

ace the plan according to coach marty is to keep tomlinson, brees and most the starters on the bench. so flutie plays at least 3 qtrs followed by philip rivers.reserves will play alot on both sides of the ball. this is a party to celebrate the AFC west title and a truly wonderfull year after 10 years of futility. the chiefs can do what ever they want were going to the playoffs baby! ~RG
