You aren't buying the PC thing? They are losing 10K viewers a week. They are cutting 100M in salary over the next few months. They are hemorrhaging money left and right and are failing. Their business model is failing. What do you feel the answer is? Disney is now paying for the losses of ESPN.
I liked the RX Thread that explored the contributing factors to ESPN's demise cuz guys introduced ideas ("whys") that hadn't occurred to me, some real "Out of The Box" thinking by guys, in that thread. Appears that thread got deleted though cuz I can't find it. My opinion is that "Cord-Cutting" is the main reason for ESPN's decline, combined with a Deja-Vu-like inability to find a way to monetize Online Platform, similar to how the Big Record Companies failed to adapt.
Personally though I don't know that "adequately" Monetizing Online Sports Platform was even a viable goal....managing to get enough paying subscribers....for ESPN or any Sports Information outlet.
How anyone can view the direction that ESPN chose to take: Siding with Liberal Ideologies and Obvious & Embarrassing Pandering to Black People as anything other than a decision to wave The White Flag of Surrender, is beyond me. First Year Business Student could have identified that this was simply not going to work, where the goal was to sustain ESPN.
TateHill's recommendation would have been infinitely better: Focus on Breasts. Make Titties the Sun within your Programming Universe.
Its easy to imagine how Political Correctness could derail that, put The Kabbutz on that idea but concluding that PC/Liberal Consultants/Staffers at ESPN managed to get Disney & ESPN's Handlers to agree to just "Take The Red Pill" is much more difficult.
Personally I'd really love to see the research that was done which led to ESPN's decision to Paint It Black, and Minutes from the meetings that led to the decision to embrace the Content they've chosen. Man, that would be fascinating. I do expect some very good books to come from this, along with some real valuable Business School teaching material, Communications...Sports Broadcasting as well.
Those who go "Big Picture", view The Panaroma 360 degree View see the possibility of some Teachable Moments within Schools of Philosophy, Sociology and American Studies as well via the birth, from this particular Black Hole Implosion that is ESPN, of the question:
"Is The Appropriate Attonement for White Privilege & Correct Punishment for The History of White Heterosexual Males in America for "CIS-Gendered" White Guys to Kill Themselves?"
ESPN appears to have arrived at "Yes", in answer to this question.
Occam's Razor answer though feels like Disney is maneuvering a real nice Tax Write-off here, and the decision to sink the ship is about a longer-term +EV $$$$ situation for Disney than it is "political correctness."
I certainly could be wrong on that though....."PC" Crap has as large a role as you seem to believe, enfuego....man, that would be utterly fascinating.
