I have enjoyed watching(and some wagering) my first year of EPL.
Now what happens?? I hear everyone talking about making the Top 4. What happens next and how is it played out?? What happens to Derby--they are relegated down??
Thx

There are 4 major divisions in the top tier of football in England.

The Premiership
The Championship
League 1
League 2

The three worst teams in the Premiership (Derby, Fulham and Bolton - if the season ended today) get relegated to the Championship and the three best teams in the Championship (Stoke, West Brom + play off winner) get promted to the Premiership. The teams finishing in 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th play off for the third spot in the EPL and the three worst teams in the Championship get relegated to League 1 and so on.

As for the race for top 4 in the EPL this is because the top 4 teams qualify for the Champions League next year, a very lucrative and prestigious competition. The teams finishing in 5th, 6th and 7th will qualify for a lesser European competition called the UEFA Cup. With promotion/relegation and the fight for European places all at stake there are very few meaningless games at any time of the year, even now with only a handfull of games left.

So there are no "playoffs" for the EPL??

Thanks for the info.

Has a team that has come up from the Championship ever won the Premier the next year??

No and they NEVER will. It's all about survival and maybe in a year or two competiting for a place in Europe but no team that gets promoted will be breaking into the top 4 anytime soon never mind winning the EPL.

That is a wager I accept at any price.

actually, has happened a handful of times but not for 30 years (Nott Forest in '78) ... Watford finished 2nd in '83...of course was called "Division One" back then. In the late 90's Nott Forest almost did it again (finished 3rd)

it was actually 94-95 finished 3rd behind Blackburn and United. That is the last time a newly promoted club managed a top-4 finish. If WBA can make some signings and keep their core I think they can crack latter half of top 10 next year

Agree it has happened I meant going forward. The difference between the Chelsea's/Man United's of this world and teams like Blackburn and Reading is staggering.

I prefer the league as it is now with the best players in the world choosing the EPL over La Liga and Serie A ... then again I'm hardcore United and would probably feel differently if I supported West Ham. United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool have brought in terrific talent though some may say too much non-English (hint...Arsenal)

They might as well play in a different league.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney on the same squad is sick. As the ESPN play by play announcer said a couple of weeks ago during the Roma/Man U match, "the combination of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney is intoxicating."

well, remember that United made each of these players what they are today. Yes they were known young commodities before the transfers but it is very different than buying up Ballack, Sheva, and Cole when they are already world elite players (then actually have them regress). The only horrendous signing United has made in the last several years is Park Ji-Sung while most every other top-10 EPL squad have several mistakes to their credit. It's one thing to have money, it's another to use it wisely
