No. Please do not whole heartedly listen to that. Yes he has points, yes there are advantages and disadvantages, but like I have mentioned -- you need to be honest with your computer needs. To say do NOT get a desktop is like saying, DO NOT get a car with less than 4 seats. To each their own! Obviously you have thought this out -- there are monumental advantages for laptops and desktops. You just have to figure yours out.

Once you go the laptop route, WEIGHT becomes just as big of an issue as performance. So does screen size.

HOME BUILT machines are FINE. But YOU, the BUYER/CONSUMER/USER have to have knowledge on it! If you don't, forget it! Be honest with yourself about how much you know about computers. Would you be better served with a prebuilt system? YES. Is it possible, if you knew more about computers and how to build them, you could be just as satisfied with a HOME BUILT one? YES AGAIN.

Again, yes technically speaking they are better parts. But are you really going to notice the difference if you are writing an email and browsing the internet? No and no.

You don't need a 156K PCI Data Fax Modem412-0914 from Dell, unless you are planning to NOT use high speed internet. These computers have ethernet ports built in.

Are you going to be rewriting and writing DVDs? I would also go for a bigger monitor. After a while of looking at #'s for long periods of time, you are going to find a 15 inch screen pretty small. Go for at least a 17 inch.

What you don't get with a home built system :

Warranty
You are stuck with many pieces to a big puzzle, and if anything goes wrong you are responsible to individually contact each place of purchase.
Build quality : you are refined to the skill level of the person making the system for you.

-----

The case for a powerful self built system is very important. You need great air circulation to keep it humming for years.

The gentleman who is building this has 6-7 of them in his home which he has all built. If there was ever a problem, I know he would fix it so from a tech side I am taken care of here. I have been looking at some 19"-20" monitors and found a View Sonic 20"/2ms response $199...seemed like a good deal. For what this guy is going to build me he is charging roughly $400 just for the CPU and then whatever I decide on for keyboard/mouse/monitor/speakers is up to me.

Austin I don't know where you live but I am in Houston where there is constant discussion of a city wide wifi network. I also have a Sprint Wireless card for one of my two laptops and it runs me about $50 a month after taxes. Not sure if I am grandfathered in on a good rate or if that is what they currently run but they are not as expensive as some would have you believe.

The fact of the matter is that screen size and capability restrictions with laptops are a thing of the past... I am not sure who Dr. Pepper is and all but when you describe that you are looking for a machine to surf the net it becomes a no brainer to me.

I spend half of each day on the net and I probably spend 4 hours a week at local coffee shops on their free wifi. Depending on what your internet connection is going wireless is painless and very in expensive these days. For instance if you are paying more than $20 a month for your phone you can sign up with Vonage and get wireless for practically free thru a router deal with them AND save on your phone bill.

Being tethered to a wall is for graphic designers and programmers who need high powered machines. You said you want something you can chill on the net with.

To use Dr Peppers analogy it is like buying a huge truck because it has a huge bed and a powerful engine and then you never haul anything. Or for the same price you get a solid SUV or Sportscar which is fuel efficent and sleek and sexy and can be taken anywhere.

As far as not buying a custom machine.. from a family member maybe... IMO that is like buying the huge truck I mentioned earlier from a buddy who builds them on the side with "better" parts.

Good luck man, my email is doc@ifellas.com should you have any questions.

You will regret a desktop man, believe me.

Well, if you check my new thread I have made the decision to buy a laptop. I am trying to decide all of what I need in one.
