Donald Trump is still the preferred candidate of a majority of Republican voters, but that number is getting worse by the week. Now that the initial shock of the indictment has worn off for most Republicans, they are starting to see that the former President is facing real problems, and his support among Republican voters has fallen four points in the last week. This reverses a months-long trend of his support increasing, as Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains.

He is still the front runner for the 2024 Republican nomination. And I tell you that just so that you know where Trump stands right now. But now let's talk about trends because for the last few months, Donald Trump has been on an upward trajectory within the Republican party. And the indictments from a couple weeks ago actually made his poll numbers go up for a moment. And almost quite literally for only a moment, because the week after, which is this past week, the indictments came down. Donald Trump's support among his own Republican party fell four points went from 57 to 53. Still a majority. Still a majority. I'll give you that. Sure. But he is now in every poll out there trending downward now, so is Ron DeSantis. So it's not like DeSantis is going to swoop in and be the guy that overtakes Donald Trump. But if this downward trend continues, which I do believe that it will, it does open the lane for a different Republican to perhaps swoop in and say, Hey, look, I'm not crazy. I'm not doing stupid things against Disney. I'm not indicted. Maybe look at me for a change. Now whether Republican voters choose to do that, I, I don't think they will. I think Trump is still the guy, even as he continues to lose support. But I think one of the big reasons that he's losing support right now after gaining it, even after the indictment, the days after the indictment, I think the shock has worn off. Now, I think you had a lot of kind of knee-jerk Republican reaction saying, oh my God, I can't believe they're politicizing and going after the former guy, this is so rude. I love him now. And now they're looking at it like, okay, you know what? Uh, I, I actually, I don't really know. I I'm not really a fan of the guy. I wasn't really to begin with. I just, I kind of overreacted. You we're seeing that, like that's what the polls are telling us. We are seeing that the shock value has worn off, which means when other indictments from other bodies, perhaps Georgia or the DOJ come down, the shock won't be there anymore because it's no longer going to be the first time that a former president was indicted by a law enforcement body. So things are going to continue on this downward trend for Trump. The question is how far will he drop? Because if he only drops, you know, one or two points a month, he can still ride that and cruise to victory in The, the early primary in caucus states and still win the nomination. But if we're talking about him losing five, six points per month, I mean, he lost four in the last week, but if he loses five, 6% per month between now and uh, the start of primary season, he is done. And that Eugene Carroll lawsuit coming up beginning on Tuesday, that's a big one. That is the one that for two years, I have told people to keep an eye on that one because that could determine whether or not he sexually assaulted a woman. So yeah, there's a lot of bad things coming in. Donald Trump's future. There doesn't appear to be many good things on the horizon either. So I expect these poll numbers to continue their downward trend. It's just a question of how far down he's going to fall.
