Hey kermit. I remember your dog very well.

I have played the dogs for about 35 years now. I started at Sodrac Park in North Sioux City, South Dakota.

Has anyone ever been to Sodrac. It was one of the biggest tracks in the nation at one time. When Bluffs Run opened up in Omaha that was the demise of Sodrac.

Casino gambling and the boats have hurt the greyhound industry bigtime. People nowadays want fast action and do not want to wait around 15 minutes between races.

I still wager at the OTB at Palm Beach and Raynham in Boston. Massachusetts banned greyhound racing after a general election in November. The PETA people ran a huge smear campaign and got it banned. The last races will be in December of this year.

It is pretty rough winning with any consistency at the dogs, but I really enjoy handicapping and watching them run.
Glad to hear you remember my dog. He was awesome ! You say you wager at West Palm Beach. The guy who trained and raced many of my dogs moved to West Palm Beach and had a great kennel there until He passed away a few years ago. His name was Roy Grober. Jeff wilcox was also a trainer for us in Portland at MKC. Mike Moody raced our dogs at Seabrook and a few other tracks. The Peta people were also partly responsible for running the greyhound business out of MKC in Portland also. Oregon had legal slots permited in almost every tavern and of course wagering was allowed on sports to a degree and plenty of Indian Casinos so the end of big time greyhound racing was over long before the PETA people started protesting dog racing in oregon. Too bad because in it's prime, it was a lot of fun and very exciting. 10,000 fans attended on the weekends sometimes.

I go to the one in Bonita Springs (off of 75)...

What I do is just play my three numbers straight then box for tri's...

In every race...then forget get about them..until the end...

In the mean time, I cap the REAL races...:drink:

I've had pretty good success w/ this method...cause

I can't let the action on the board sway my decision..

hence, not betting w/ the crowd...

I've brought in some nice tri's ...:103631605

Fish...they have a great poker room there as well...always packed

plus some real good eats....

all around nice place...

LOL, I do the SAME with 128 and 125 first race to last

Kermit,

I know Mike Moody. I spoke with him on the phone last week. He was/is in south Florida, but still lives in the town of Seabrook. He's been out of the greyhound business for years. Mike's brother still plays greyhounds and is one of the sharpest there is. He really only plays jackpots after they've reached a certain threshold. I'm certain that he would say it's never been more difficult to win than it is now (or even the last few years). He made some massive scores in the late 80's and early 90's.

I was a greyhound player for a dozen or so years and had a stretch of about 5 years in the middle of that where I was a steady winner (10 to 40K a year). I loved superfecta's (with a 12K plus pool) and would hit many. Often splitting it with a partner or two and had a piece of a few twin-tri's here and there. I also owned two litters, one of which produced 2 major stakes finalists. Eventually, in the early to mid 90's, handle's plummeted and simulcasting came in. These were two factors that prevented me from continuing to win. You can overcome the takeout as long as the pools are large enough and there's a lot of public money going on bad chalk. Once the public stopped going and the handle dropped, it was a losing battle. Simulcasting only accellerated the process. I stopped playing and going around 1996, probably about 3 years too late.

I also had loaned out a ton of dough when I was winning, not realizing that the odds of getting paid back were about equal to the chances of getting a hole in one. By the time I stopped going, it would've been difficult to know whether you were at a racetrack or in a nut house.

I feel that the only way you could win at greyhound racing these days aside from hitting a twin-tri or tri-super jackpot, is if you have a bookmaker who takes win (place, or show) or quinella's. Putting a hundred or two hundred on a win bet at a track is certain to make that greyhound the heavy favorite. Back when I would play dogs with a BM, you had to bet sports also. Anyway, it never lasts. Once they realize you have talent and are going to bury them with 20 and 30 dollar winners at 200 a pop, they all say the same thing... "No more dogs". I don't recall how many have said this to me, but it would take more than one hand to count them.

Geesh , obviously the 5# dog was injured he was still laying on the track . I wonder if he was seriously injured / paralyzed or had to be put down ? That's the thing about dog racing it can get ugly with the dogs bumping & crashing into each other at high speeds . That 1st turn is a fucking bitch in dog racing , that's where you will usually see them crash .

I only went once in my life in Wheeling, WVa. Went with my Dad and neither one of us cashed a ticket. It was fun tho.
Yeah, I've never seen a dog race before and I was amazed at how many of them fell at the turns. I think there's only 4 dog tracks right now in the US.
