No. Never will. When people think of sports betting they think of the mob. Simple as that.

I dont think of the mob when i think of sportsbetting.

Do you ace?

When I tell people I wager on sports for a living they always think that I am a bookie, as they think that's the only way you can make money on sports. Others make snide comments such as the tired old cliche that "the casino always wins in the end." Other friends think I live the life of Riley by betting on sports, not realizing how difficult and time-consuming it is.

All in all, people mostly seem to keep their distance and rarely do I ever get grilled on my methods of beating the sportsbooks. If I were working some slave job and someone told me they stay at home and make a decent living wagering on sports I would be drooling all over him and begging him to share his secrets. For some reason I never got such a reaction.

As for girls, this was often a show-stopper right from the get-go. It took me awhile to realize that woman aren't impressed by sports gamblers, so once it did hit home I began to lie and say that I was a pilot, even though I'm terrrified of flying and have never stepped foot into a cockpit in my life! Once they saw that I was professional and successful I would come clean, but don't ever make the mistake of telling them this when you first meet them.

I can't be bothered to justify what I do so I just tell most people I'm an investor or trader. It's easy to convince people I'm not a 'gambler', where there gambling opinions come in is whether they think I'll be successful longterm or not. Of course a lot of it has to do with how open-minded they are.

Lots of people understand sportsbetting.

Those who do not are stupid.

I have not found one person I consider intelligent who does not understand one can find an advantage gambling.

Now the general masses have no clue.

doesn't seem to be an issue here. You just have to give them a quick cliff notes version of how you win and if they aren't smart enough to figure out it works or that it is legit is nobody that I need to be hanging around much anyway. Telling them that you pay taxes on the earnings often can help make it seem legit to them.

Somehow my dad found about how well I was doing from a friend, so around Christmas I decided to sit him and my mom down and explain best to them (who have zero idea what I was talking about). After an hour I left and felt maybe they understood. Well about a month goes by and my mom says my dad comes home at least twice a week and makes little snide comments about how I have a problem and is really worried about me.

The worst part is I feel almost stupid trying to explain to others as I can imagine what they are thinking. My live in GF and I are moving into a home almost twice the size and money as the one we live in now and one of the main reasons is because of my confidence and success of betting. The worst part is we can't (and I dont want to) explain to her friends and family about this. I think if this was poker success things would be totally different.
How did your dad find out? The guy who told him must not be a friend of your's. What an idiot he must be. He should have just told your mom.

Ice you seem to care too much about what other people think...you could just as easily say you're in 'the market' which techniclly you are- and there's very little difference....I suppose if you made the same amount of money investing in stocks over the past year everyone would be looking up to you? I just don't see the difference...you apparently already are doing fairly well with your regular job and recent real estate interest, how could your parents be worried? On the surface you have to look like you're doing pretty well -one would think.

I tell them my opinion is professional. They say what do you mean by that? I say my opinion is SUPERIOR. I EXPOSE LIES FOR A LIVING. What LIES? Lies made bu our elemnetary science teachers. Lies from the police department. Lies from Ted Koppel. Lies from Sean Salsibury and Ron Jaworski. Lies from the FDA who is trying to trim the population. Lies from police, defense attorneys, and prosecutors.:youmad:

Everybody knows who I am, they know I am a "Professional".

They know I know the truth. The truth about Ohio State softball for example. I know the truth about Hillary and Guiliani, that they are both abominations, they kill babies. They are both lawyers.

I know the truth about dog food from China. Biggest liar is Peter Gammons. The truth about the war, we need to being going door to door in Detroit and in Jersey City instead of Baghdad.

I know the lies of the atkins diet. I know doctors know nothing about physical health. I know police know nothing about mental health. I know, trust me I know. I know what a gyro ball was 20 years ago. I know the diffrence between green clay and red clay. This is the country where people draft Ely Manning 1st overall. You think I give a RATSASS what these LYING SCUMBAGS think of my job?:puppy:

Wow....where did that come from?

Here's a question: A friend told me that one of his friends deposited $50 into pokerstars 2 years ago, promised himself he would never redeposit any more money into online gambling, and has since turned that $50 into over a half million without ever having deposited any more, ever.

This is not from one big tournament win, but rather grinding out LHE and STTs (he could not provide me with stakes, although when I grilled him my friend said he *thought* he started at $1/$2... and later said it was probably less).

What would you say the odds are that this story is true as told?

(I realize this may seem offtopic but the answers here will directly correlate to the OPs question, I promise)

That is very true. Tell them ways that they can use to their advantage in sports betting, give them some results that are on paper, and let them decide whether or not they want to "invest" a little into this "sports betting" thing. If they do, and they make a nice profit, they will act as if you are a genius.

This thread is pretty funny. Seriously, is everyone here is such a lifetime winner?? I'm not, you people act like all you do is win. I read the picks forums, there isn't that much winning going on.

Pretty much this. 99% (or maybe more) of the stories of people being lifetime winners and retiring off gambling are bullshit. And that's why non-gamblers (rightfully) do not respect this as a profession. Too bad for the tiny minority of people who can actually make a living off of it. I am not one of them by a mile.

I know NOTHING about the stock market, but to have winners don't you need loosers?

This is NOT true in the stock market. It isn't a negative sum game (like poker or sportsbetting) or even a 0-sum game. Value can be created from companies' present value projects.

That's the main reason the average investor makes money, but the average sports bettor loses money.

However, yes. It's FREAKING ANNOYING to have everyone look at you like you're going to gamble your money away. And it's freaking ANNOYING to have to explain why sportsbetting is different than, say...playing keno. :discuss:
