same...we last bought a new forester in cash a few years ago...now I'm finally giving up on my inherited (from wife) 2003 Accord. upgrading to a new (2018) accord in a couple of weeks...will only finance less than 10K.
Pay that off next year and be ready to buy another new car in 3 ish years. Vicious cycle. Haven't had a car payment since 2006

About 18 years ago I leased a van, went way over in mileage then leased the next one as well. Payment was really good and I bought the 2nd one after I was done. I think I did ok but won't lease another car. The ONLY advantage I saw was I was over in mileage by 20,000 or so and they simply looked the other way and didn't charge me because I was getting into another lease. And the van was worth way less than what the purchase price was due to wear and tear (my kids are hard on cars) a couple dents that were fairly large and tires were about bald.

The price on the 2nd one they didn't add anything to it and even gave me a good lease loyalty discount. So in this case I think I did well but 99% of the time I would not lease. I buy all my cars now and rarely finance. But I did finance part of my current truck as I didn't have enough cash at the time for a 2017 RAM. We try to not have a car payment ever but at most 1

Do you have a 10 mile round trip to work..?
Do you have a sig other? Do you lease 2 cars lol?
Do you like paying full coverage on your CARS (plural)?

i have a cheap mechanic-
if you buy cars right you can drive them for almost free.
i buy at auction and avoid the dealers, many good deals can be found from private owners likewise.

This is true. Especially some of the older American cars just keep on going and even if repairs needed parts are cheap especially if used. Yes, if you know what you're doing and don't constantly end up with lemons or cars that have expensive parts for repairs then sure. I will concede what you're saying.

When you're leasing you never own it and always paying, when you buy a new car it' the worst investment you can make.

For most people used cars are a hassle and ongoing expenses and breaking down at inconvenient times. What you're saying is also true. If you know what you're doing and buy the right car then sure.

Also, it's a status thing, at this point in my life I can't be seen driving an old car. Has to be brand new. It's not just me, most people feel this pressure especially those that work in an office setting. I can't imagine pulling into the employee parking lot and not driving a brand new car. It would stick out like a sore thumb.

Oh and you mentioned cheap mechanic. That's huge too. You have a good thing going then. I used to have a ma an pa type joint where I knew the guy from my old man. Basically just charged for the parts never labor. Helped me a lot when I was driving beaters during college. He's passed away and his son sold the shop. Hard to find a cheap mechanic and/or one you can trust not to work you over.
