most of us know that HDL is good cholesterol and LDL is bad, but over the last couple of years significant research has been done and doctors are paying more attention to triglyceride levels rather then LDL as being the main health risk.. My doctor discussed this with me last year,, and just recently read this in last month's Mens Health Magazine...

"Cholesterol isn't the crystal ball it's been made out to be" , says a recent study in the International Journal of Cardiology. "Rather, Triglyceride levels may be the best predictor of heart-disease risk in young, healthy men." Researchers analyzed 2,500 people's blood samples, then tracked their health for 13 years. Men with high triglycerides were nearly 1.5 times more likely to develop heart disease than those with low levels, regardless of what their total cholesterol scores were.. "If your triglycerides are above 150 milligrams per deciliter (Mg/dl) , hit the gym as lifting weights 3 days a week can lower triglycerides by 20 percent...

Of course knowing your total cholesterol scores is good, but don't overlook your triglyceride levels when the results come back..

Agreed. My triglyceride counts always seem to come up a little high. My doctor says it's due to the fact that I eat fatty foods that are present in fast food.

I just got my physical done on Thursday. I ALWAYS ask for my blood test results even if everything is OK.

Just got the results of my blood test. It turns out that everything except HDL levels are OK. My HDL levels are at 37 which is just below 40 which is considered the lowest level for a healthy person. My doctor suggested that I eat less carbs and exercise for 1/2 per day instead of the 15 minutes that I've been doing.

My total cholesterol level is ok. HDL is cholesterol that cleans the LDL off the walls of your blood vessels. So I'm thinking that if my overall cholesterol level is good maybe I don't need as much HDL.
