I never understood why people would buy a dog from a breeder when there are thousands that need rescued from shelters.

Both of mine are rescues and I plan to get another one in the next year.

Is your dog from a breeder or a shelter?

My last 3 dogs have been rescues. We adopted a Walker hound when he was 14 months old and he lived 12 years. We rescued a 3 year old Husky from horrid conditions ~ but unfortunately he was a runner and he was hit by a car after we only had him a little over a year. We now have a Golden Retriever that is 6 that we got through a local Golden rescue group when he was 16 months old, once again horrid conditions ... he could barely walk...now he is the best dog we have ever had. I agree, always check shelters and the breed rescues in your area before going to a mass breeder.

justin you are really lighting up the boards today.

You are like a young bigbet....with a really thin rolodex of threads....eventually you will get there.

no dogs here....i would get a rescue but nothing wrong with buying from a breeder.....all dogs need a good home. It isn't the dog's fault if they are pure

Pet Peeve: the term "rescue".

You didn't fucking rescue shit! You went to the fucking pound and got a goddamn dog!

As a career firefighter, the term "rescue" is used in the Emergency Management/Response world. A "rescue dog" is a dog that is trained to "rescue" people.

It's not some dog you adopted from the pound!!

ive bought both, and they were both shepherds and i have not a bad thing to say about either.

i guess what im trying to say is,don't be afraid to take a rescue dog cause its all about how you treat, play, train and love your dog

haven't picked out a dog yet....

Itll be more about the timing... Ill check out the local SPCA and give it a couple weeks, and if nothing comes up that I like, ill go look at breeders...

timing will be important. looking to get a dog next summer.

although all your points are valid...

a rescued dog refers to the Euthanization of a dog...

hence... you are rescuing a dog from certian death...

Breeder, If I get another one it will be from a shelter. I get semi attitudes all the time, about getting him from a breeder and not a shelter, their anger is misguided, go after the person who abandoned and mistreated the poor dog. I wasn't going to take a chance on a dog that was going to be around people a lot and didn't want him taking a chunk out of them.

I've done both. But if I go for another dog, I'm definitely going the breeder route. I want my dog to have traits that I'm looking for. Most of the pound dogs that I've seen are mutts. Not that there is anything wrong with a mutt, they might even be healthier in many cases, but you might be getting a mix of traits that aren't favorable for you situation or that don't express themselves until the dog is already full grown.

Two dogs - both from shelter. This led to me volunteering at a dog shelter, which I recommend to anyone who likes dogs.

What's not to understand? Some people don't want mixed breeds. They want a legit AKC dog.

This, I have 3 boxers, bought two from breeders and have papers and bought one from some random person I found online, ironically the one I bought from the person who was not a breeder has cost me a small fortune from being sick a lot.

This is what I don't understand.

Those pure breeds are going to find a good home regardless. The ones at the shelter are going to be executed by no fault of their own.

To me it's an easy decision.

So that's not my problem there are irresponsible people out there, my decisions about adding a family member shouldn't be controlled by others incompetence
