When the Vegas racebooks were not parimutuel, ie they themselves booked horse bets, there were limits on all payoffs. 20 to 1 limit on win bets seems low however.

Bottom line if you ever want to play BIG odds horses you are better off playing it at an OTB, and lose the 5%.

I will have to disagree on this one.

I believe there are 2 well known sportsbooks that pay full odds on everything from w/p/s to exotics to triples and more.

5dimes is one of them.

I also have a credit book that pays me full track odds

Are you saying that 5 Dimes would've paid $47,000+ for the triple if someone hit it? If so thats a great book to have. Thats good you have 2 places offshore that pay full track odds. 98% don't.

give your local a choice.
either he pays you track odds or some
mutually agreed upon odds higher than
20-1 or you will NEVER do business with
him again. if you are serious about taking
your business elsewhere, if he really believes
that, and if he is a resonably good businessman
that thinks long term; he will give you more than
the 20-1. you are in the drivers seat, you just
don't know it and you must believe it.

I do not bet horses too much, but once in awhile I will call a couple horses into my local. We always go with what the closing number is in the race.

Over the weekend I called in the 3, 8, and 17 horse in the derby. 20 to win on all of them. I hit the 50-1 shot on the 8 horse. So I am thinking I won $1000 on the bet.

Call the local today and he tells me that locals like himself cap the odds off at 20-1. He says its what all locals do. Never heard of such a thing.

Have any of you heard of a local having a rule like this?

How would you handle the situation?
I would Collect what the local is willing to pay me, and then I would just not do anymore business with him.

If You are a good client of his he will call you in a couple weeks and ask why you are not playing anymore, at this point you can rip into him a little saying how unhappy you were with the way he handled your horse wager. Maybe then he will be willing to work with you more to settle on paying you in full.

But to be honest with you, I wouldnt want to do business with any local that is giving me a hard time over 1k. IMO Your better off going offshore with a book like Bet JM or somethin.

I can see a small to mid time local doing this if you cracked him like for 30k, but for 1k he really should not mind paying that out. His Rules on the horse action should have been stated up front if anything.

Do you guys realize some people have a hard time finding ANY local, much less the pick of the litter?

I don't see the need for having a local when you can bet offshore with books like Pinnacle or Olympic.
