I can't wait to see how this washes out. This guy has a big-time lawsuit against the city, the department, and the union.
I'm a retired Jacksonville, FL firefighter (those who knew him, Coach LT - which where I got my username - was also a retired Jacksonville firefighter). There is a "Brotherhood of Firefighters" that is a national organization and are essentially a group of whining bullies. They sue their departments for any piddly perceived "racists" incident and this watermelon "incident" is no surprise.
The City of Jacksonville was sued in the 1980's and for more than 10 years had to hire 1 black firefighter for any white firefighter they hired. I waited 5 years to get hired.....and I was a veteran, college grad, paramedic (not an EMT, which is a glorified first aid card), fire inspector, fire instructor, and fire officer (all state certifications). I literally got hired with 19 year old black dudes that had nothing more than a HS diploma.
The Brotherhood has won numerous lawsuits against the City for racial discrimination on promotional exams. Literally a multiple choice test that is put together by an outside agency. They claimed the test was/is racially biased.....and won! 20+ blacks were promoted to Captain, w/ another 30 or so promoting to LT.
