Judge excellent thread.

FWIW - Preachinatthebar out of derby.
After watching Mike Pegram's Preachinatthebar work five furlongs in 1:01 3/5 Thursday morning, trainer Bob Baffert said the son of Silver Charm will not run in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I).
Baffert said he didn't feel the colt is good enough right now to win a race as demanding as the Derby.

Preachinatthebar-Trained by Bahhert,Stevens up.Gotta love those two together.More so than the horse.Another of the West Coast enigmas who took turns beating each other.Cracked the 100 barrier twice.Horrible race in the Blue Grass. Is allowed a throw out.Versatile style. Can run from off the pace or closer to it.Has ran carrying 122,but mostly around 116.Has been beaten by some of these and has lost to some. Not sure if Baffert is running him just to have a horse in the Derby or if he really thimnks he has a shot.Nice breeding.Outside of the debacle at Keenland has only run on the west coast.

Quintons Gold Rush-Trained by Asmussen,no rider yet.Lightly raced horse.Jumped up last race and ran a 109.I tend to think that fig may be a little suspect.Has a front running style.I think the distance here may be a question. Can see him being a factor in terms og keeping early fractions honest.Has one luke warm work at CD.May end up being a nice hosre, just don't see it getting it done in the Derby

Read The Footnotes-Trained by Violette,Albarado up.Another one who is coming straight from the Florida Derby. Can you get a horse to win the Derby after a month and a half layoff.Don't ever remember it being done.Very consistent horse.Has run some monster speed figs.Horse clearly has talent. And one point was probably viewed as Derby fav. Also likes to run on or close to the pace.Had trouble getting a mile and 1/8 last time. Then takes layoff and they ask him to go mile and1/4.Asking alot.Has been working very nice.Has run against top competition

Rock Hard Ten-Trained by Orman,no jock yet.Unraced as a 2 year old which does not fit the winning profile here.Horse with a big up side.3 races,2 firsts and a 2nd.2 out of 3 times broke 100 with speed fig.Only has run at Santa Anita.Seems to have stalking style. The added distance has yet to have been a problem.Really like this horse, but not here.Watch for this horse to make some big noise come the fall.

Sinister-trained by Toscanowith Toscano up.To make it brief, think this is one of the horses that has no business being here.Never broken 100.Has been running since 2 years old with no layoff.Did absolutley nothing in Wood.Does have early foot.I hope it does run to add more early speed to race. That is all the horse will do here.

quote:
Had trouble getting a mile and 1/8 last time

Read The Footnotes!!! Judge the breeding says no prob with 10 furlongs....Like you, I don't care about training to the Derby..The Fl. Derby was a definite bounce considering the highest speed figs in the Fountain of Youth in 20 years!!!
Like this one!

Smarty Jones-trained by Servis with Elliot up.Probably the best story of the Derby, and I'm sure on Saturday we will hear about this horse ad naseum.Should be second fav in the race.Another one with early speed.Horse has done nothing wrong. One every race with all but one speed fig over 100.Has gained respect. However has taken the soft route to Derby.Beat Borrego, but not much else that I can see.If you get sharp fractions with the added distance,I can see Borrego turning the tables here.Has a nice amount of race to be in peak form for Derby. Can this horse be rated????I think it has to be to win here.Either way you have to love what this horse has already done. You have to respect the connections for having the loyalty to keep the jock up.Is it the right move????I don't know.

Song of The Sword-Trained by Pederson,no jock.Very nice horse.Unraced at 2,which is a draw back.Has had a very nice three year old campaign.Look at this horses speed figs!Nice gradual improvement in each race.Good sign.Likes to come from mid pack.Breeding indicates mile and 1/4 should not be a problem.Hasn't run against the heavy hitters yet.Interesting.

St Averil-trained by Becerra,no jock.Another of the West Coast "Sybil" horses.Looked like it was really coming into form, and then came the SA Derby.Had nothing.Has cracked the 100 fig twice. The spped figs coming from the west coast are not that good.Don't know if I buy into them or not. This horse has run right with Lion Heart,so has to be fairly quick.Tactical speed running style. Not sure if this hosre will like mile and1/4 or not.Has only raced on 2 tracks.Lightly raced so is certainly not a used up horse. If you throw out SA derby, this one looks ok.

Tapit-trained by Dickenson,Dominguez up.Likes to come from off pace.Came from way back to win the wood.Only one speed fig over 100.I don't think the Wood was as slow as Beyers does.Lightly raced. But they work this horse out alot.Ran 6th in Fla derby only to come back and win the Wood.Which is the real Tapit?Dickenson loves this horse.Has run all 4 races at diferrent tracks.

The Cliff's Edge-trained by Zito,Sellers up.The probable favorite here, but don't see him being a prohibitive favorite.Money should be spread around.Ran huge race in Blue Grass carrying 125.Likes to come from way off the pace. Not Sure if I believe the 115 speed fig.If it is true you would have to be concerned about a bounce.Going form 97 to 115 is a big jump.Big plus****has one two races at CD,so likes the track.Distance should not be a problem.Biggest quetions are does he get fast pace he needs and does he fire.

Wimbledon-Baffert trained,Bailey up.Can't beat those connections.Bailey could have ridden alot of horses in this race and chose this one.Says something. His speed figs aren't great.Only broke 100 once.Running style is versatile. Can run on lead or come off pace.Strange prep line.Ran once as two year old and then ran once a month leading to this race.Strange, but hard to doubt Baffert.Got to believe Baily will try to stalk speed here.has also run on a variety of tracks.I am not aslo convinced this horse will like the extra distance.Has been beaten and beaten a few here.

Ladies and gentlemen, those are your possible starters.Did I miss any?Tommorow, will give an over view as to what I look for when charting the Derby.

Missed a few.
Pollard's Vision-trained by Pletcher,Velaquez up.The one eyed horse named for Red Pollard.Should also get plenty of ink Saturday.A little heavily raced as a 2 year old for my taste.Really has bloomed as a 3 year old.Comes the Ill Derby route, a prep that has gotten respect in the last couple of years.Last 34 races ran 105,101,107.Those put him right there.likes to run on or near pace.I'm not completely sold he will like added didstance, although his breeding is finre in this regard. Can they rate him?????

Pomeroy-trained by Biacone,no jock.Another one who runs close to lead.Has run in only grade 2 and 3 races.has broken 100 in his only two starts at three.Every race at a different track.Distance is an issue.Definately could move forward off of last.Did beat Cliff's Edge last year,so who knows.

Pro Prado, trained by Holthus with Mckee up.Who?Suspect connections.Just may want a trip to the Derby.Comes from off the pace.Lightly raced at 2.Only won once at 3.Finished only 3 back to Smarty Jones in Ark Derby. And 1 1/4 behind him in the southwest. Will need a fast pace in front of him and will probably get it.You can make a case for this horse finishing ahead of Smarty with the right pace.

Whew,Is that it
