Fields has been the target of at least two lawsuits for allegations of excessive force and negligence, respectively.
In 2007, a couple accused Fields, another deputy and Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott of false arrest, excessive force and violation of free speech rights two years earlier, but the jury ruled in Fields' favor, CNN reported.
According to court documents obtained by the network, Fields approached Carlos Edward Martin after receiving a report of excessive noise. Martin said Fields "slammed him to the ground, cuffed him, began kicking him, and chemically maced him until his clothing was drenched and the contents of the can of mace was [sic] depleted."
In another case, Ashton James Reese, a student at Spring Valley High School, sued Fields and nine others for his allegedly unlawful expulsion in 2013.
The plaintiff claims he was the victim of a lack of due process, negligence, negligent supervision and a violation of the right to public education, the network said.
The official complaint, reproduced on Heavy, says the stated grounds for expulsion were “unlawful assembly of gang activity and assault and battery.”
Reese’s attorneys said Fields “recklessly targets African-American students with allegations of gang membership and criminal gang activity.”
That case is set to go to trial in January 2016.
After the most recent incident, several students at Spring Valley High School took to Twitter to say that Fields has a history of using excessive force against teenagers and that he had even allegedly slammed a pregnant woman to the ground.

1st Cops should never have been called. Non violent siiy angry teenage girl issue has to be dealt with in house.

2nd That cop is just an idiot, getting violent with a young girl. You dont have the simple skills to talk the girl out of the chair!?! He is a big dude, if he feels he has to make contact which is a mistake..get a wrist lock, control an arm, so easy..violently ripping her out of the chair is stupid. He needz to be fired now.

The teacher and principal, who have way more training on how to talk a kid out of a chair, had already failed to make any progress. Why would you think a cop could do it better? The kid is a shithead.

Take your paycheck and your pension and your summer vacation and just watch her act like a fool instead of risking your job.

I would be willing to bet that everyone in that classroom learned more from this event than any lecture on graphing linear equation.
I'm not sure the answer is to do nothing. That teaches an awful lesson.

Why not just pull the desk out into the hallway and let the class continue?

Best answer I've seen in this thread yet.

This never would have happened when I was in high school. When teenagers were asked to leave class we had respect enough to do that.
The more videos I see online of kids pulling tantrums in the class room leads me to believe its a generation problem.

And parents are to blame. Where do you think this girl learned this behavior??

I always support these millenials getting the crap kicked out of them. I hate millenials. With their stupid phones and there stupid sayings and dumbass twitter and tweets and all of these freakin initials they have for things. They don't play sports anymore; they judge their self worth by how many "likes" and "retweets" they get and all of that bullshit. Hate when I watch a video and the youtube queer always wants people to "follow him" Why? And of course their absolute obsession with music and teachers teaching them white guilt or the teacher may get fired. Only good thing about millenials is they are absolute sluts having sex in 6th grade and wearing the skimpiest clothing they can find.

I'm glad at least some somewhat agree that I'm not sure what else he could have done. I have a daughter (12) and of course I would not like to see a cop do that to her. I also know my daughter would never act like that. And after making sure she was ok, if I found out she wouldn't leave the class (right or wrong) when the teachers and cop asked her to I would explain you do what your teachers and the cop says and we can figure it out later.

I heard an interview from the other girl that got arrested and I'm actually more interested/disturbed by her. From the report all she did was say this isn't right and filmed it and got taken away. If that's all she did, that IMO is more wrong.

Can't always just blame the kids though, broken home, bad environment, etc. But again, someone swings at me I'm not going to take that lightly. I wouldn't have rag dolled her but I would have restrained her too.

That's a very good point. I don't think a school cop should be involved in disciplinary issues to begin with.

Well, that's kind of his job considering school employees are not allowed to touch or have physical confrontations with teachers...Now should the school have these officers to begin with is another subject...

Im assuming the students & school in general must be bad enough, that they need them there full time.

I think we all know hoe difficult & nearly impossible it is to deal with some kids these days.

My niece taught school & couldn't deal with it anymore for various reasons, so moved on to a different career...

cops are there to ENFORCE the law, not to keep the peace, not to protect.

like that scene in aliens where the lieutenant tells everyone to unload their weapons, "what the hell are we supposed to use man? HARSH LANGUAGE?"

Don't single this school out, they're in every public school here.

Did everyone not have a school resource officer throughout school? I had one from elementary all the way through high school. Nothing ever happened, other than breaking up the occasional fight.

"protect and serve" is what they put on the sides of cars so people don't fear them.

Yeah that's my point Matt.

It's just the way kids are these days & the need for extra help is almost becoming mandatory..

Teachers get pushed to the limit & threatened, yet they can't really defend themselves, so bring in ppl who can deal with troublesome kids legally...

No doubt, I agree. It's getting worse and worse, and at a rapid rate...

That I will protect the rights, lives and property of all citizens and uphold the honor of the police profession, with my life, if need be.

This I do solemnly swear this date."

This came right out of the officer oath of the county where this incident occurred.
