Thread full of memories of great players. I was born in the south but grew to love Philly. My family sometimes traveled to baseball Clearwater spring training in the early 60's and the transition from grey Philly March winters to Florida was a tropical dream. Back then, Clearwater was a sleepy two story town ocean town. I remember the grade school shock that you could buy ice cream before school started. You could see the Gulf and sand from our school windows. I remember the surprise that Florida schools were more advanced than Pennsylvania schools and took my seat at the back of the class. Another funny memory was that when our school bus traveled over local bridges, bus ceiling roof lights would turn on and the whole bus was silenced (I never understood the reason). This thread brought back tons memories of Connie Mack and great players. Among us all who had a transistor radio back then, Johnny Callison, Chris Short, Ritchie Allen were superhumans (of all, Richie Allen was my fav). Johnny Callison ran a car dealership (I met him in the 90's at a card signing because my gal worshiped him) and died in 2006. Philly is among the best, funniest, toughest sports towns over recent decades and will always be a great knowledgeable sports city.
