Following the A's season for the most part, he's been an automatic out. I don't see how they want to upgrade their catcher defense since zambrano really likes hill. And if he can catch the z-man's off speed pitches, then he can catch the rest of the rotation's repertoire.

Kendall is hitting .282 in June and July. He's coming on and has had very favorable pre/post AS splits and AL/NL splits. Sometimes a change of scenery helps too.

I guess it does. It explains why I expect my team to win while you just "wait 'til next year." How's that working out for you? Look for me in September/October--I'll be the guy laughing at the Cubs' latest collapse.

Cubs would be tough in the playoffs with a 4 man rotation of Zambrano, Hill, Lily and Marqui and Marmol is a great reliever to have in the bullpen.

Cubs Win!
Lily and MARQUIS? Hahahahaha

So they traded Barrett and prospects for Kendall. That's what it amounts to. They should've put their problems with Barrett aside and acted like adults.

They didnt trade Barrett bc of the fight. They traded him because he is one of the worst defensive catchers in the game, is a terrible base runner, and wasnt hitting too well. Great move by the Cubs, Kendall can play defense and is a lifetime .298 hitter

Don't kid yourself, Kendall isn't ANYTHING he was in Pittsburgh or his first season or two in Oakland. Only thing he can do anymore is just make contact with the ball and put it in play. I can gaurantee you Michael Barrett will be the better hitter by the end of the season then Jason Kendall. Book it.

I keep reading from the news stories that Kendall is a great clubhouse guy. When he was in Pit he was known a cancer and had a negative attitude. The Cubs are sure trying to sell this one.The contract he has is plain stupid.

Some crazy posts in this thread.

Brilliant move by Jim Hendry.

People thought he was stupid in 2003 when he got Ramirez and Lofton. Nobody liked them then. I mean Ramirez had hit .234 in 2002. And Lofton was only hitting .277 with Pitt. What was Hendry thinking!? LOL

- Kendall is one of the best pitcher handlers around
- Check out his pre/post AS splits
- Check his AL/NL splits
- He's hitting much better in June and July
- Guy is a .300 career hitter and a high OBP (more BB's than K's)
- Oak people rave about how he calls and manages a game
- He was thrilled to come to the Cubs

Cubs had a collection of backups. Kendall is a gamer, brings a veteran presence and has a huge upside for this season. He does things to help the team win, he can bunt, still runs well for a catcher. He is a winner.

Now don't be surprised if the next move is to acquire Kenny Lofton.

Lofton would fill two holes, as they can more Soriano down to 5th.

I just dont know if Kendall is worth 9 million more than Barrett

It's not costing 9 million more. From what I read, Kendall has just $3.6m remaining, and Oak is pciking up an unspecified portion of that. Not sure how much they saved on the Barrett trade but it was probably over 1 million. Net-net the Cubs are probably spending only an additional 1-1.5m total. Pretty minor stuff. Kendall's deal ends at the end of this season. So essentially the Cubs traded Barrett, Blevins and 1 million bucks or so for Jason Kendall. Barrett and Kendall's deals both ended after this season and will be free agents.

Incidentally, Kendall waived a full no-trade clause to go to the Cubs. Hendry also said that Beane initially contacted him, not the other way around. What that tells me is that Kendall dictated where he wanted to end up and Beane made it happen.

I see SD is 3-10 with Barrett in the lineup, while the Cubs are on a 16-4 run. :ughhh:

Lofton would be an awesome pickup if he is anywhere near as good as he was a few years ago. The cubs almost went to the World Series in 2003 and Lofton was integral to that (and some easy money on 1st run to score in the playoffs). Anyhow, Lofton could lead off and Soriano could be moved down where his power makes more sense.
