“If this number keeps going, if it keeps increasing, that means that more people are being infected for each person who has this virus,” Lee said. “We could very rapidly end up in the same spot that we were in a few months back where we were concerned about the hospital bed utilization and ICU bed availability.”

Spam bumping a dead thread from April.

It looks quite alive to me. Even my dead threads get dozens of views, BTW.

And a number of Rx members have encouraged me via PM & by posts in threads such as these to continue posting useful intel.

OTOH those addicted to trolling will do what they do best in life & love to do. Troll.

Also, BTW, the mod said to add C-19 info i want to post to existing threads rather than start new threads. That is, any C-19 posts beyond the 3 new threads a day i am allowed to create. Obviously when i do that a side effect is that the thread gets bumped. Capiche?

"Very few Canadians have been infected by COVID-19, according to research

[h=1]"What early antibody tests reveal about COVID-19 in Canada[/h]In 10,000 blood samples taken in May and early June from nine provinces, fewer than one per cent tested positive for antibodies.

Very few Canadians have been infected by COVID-19, according to research from a Canadian task force set up to study the disease, suggesting that the vast majority are still susceptible to the virus.
The researchers tested 10,000 blood samples taken in May and early June from nine provinces and found that fewer than one per cent tested positive for antibodies against the new coronavirus. The presence of antibodies in blood shows that someone was previously infected with COVID-19.

The data, released Thursday, provides an early snapshot of the number of Canadians who have had the virus. The antibody testing suggests public health officials missed many cases of the virus. More than 112,000 people have been confirmed to have caught COVID-19 in Canada, while almost 9,000 people have died.
The number of people with antibodies was, however, still on the low end of what the researchers expected to find.

But Thursday’s data does not include findings from Quebec. The province collects blood separately from the rest of the country through Héma-Quebec, which promised to release its own findings in the coming days about the number of Quebecers who had caught the virus.
The COVID-19 Immunity Task Force performed the research. The group was created in April to investigate how widespread the disease is in Canada and to provide information to help manage the pandemic.
Catherine Hankins, co-chair of the task force and a professor of public and population health at McGill University, said in an interview that the data was encouraging because it showed that public health measures have been working, but it also carries a warning: Canadian society remains vulnerable.
“It’s really low,” Hankins said of the number of people with antibodies. “That means we’ve got to stay on our guard. We have to continue to use masks, physical distance … wash our hands frequently and be very careful about how we move forward reopening.”
Early antibody testing in Italy suggests half of the Italians living in hard-hit regions may have COVID-19 antibodies. In England, researchers found six per cent of people tested had antibodies, while in Germany the number was 14 per cent and in Spain it was close to five per cent.

Canada’s number, by comparison, is small. But Hankins warned that the early data only showed a sliver of Canadian society. For one thing, the blood the researchers tested came from blood donors — who tend to be healthier than the rest of the population. The study also excluded the very old, the very young and, in addition to lacking data from Quebec — which was hardest hit by the coronavirus — it also lacks any samples from the territories. Another 37,800 blood donations made in May and June are still to be tested.

“We thought it was so important, rather than waiting to get the full sample, to at least tell Canadians: ‘Look, we’re doing well, we’ve got to keep doing what we’re doing,'” Hankins said. “And we have to make sure that this uptick that we’re starting to see gets stopped now.”
In addition to the pending Quebec antibody data, more studies are being done to better determine how deeply COVID-19 has infected Canadian society. The final numbers, which will include samplings from a much more diverse set of demographics, are likely to be slightly higher than the initial data suggests, Hankins said.
For now, public health officials will be able to use the data to plan further COVID-19 prevention measures.
“Eventually it’s going to be important in our vaccine strategy,” Hankins said. “Who do we start vaccinating first when we have an effective vaccine? What’s the strategy going to be for making sure those most at risk will get it first?”

"COVID-19 can be most infectious before they show any symptoms...

"Although scientists are continuing to learn about the novel coronavirus, it appears that people with COVID-19 can be most infectious before they show any symptoms, Oughton said.

That's different from many other viruses, including the first version of SARS. It's a key reason why it's important for people to wear masks — even if they feel perfectly healthy — when physical distancing isn't possible to prevent transmission, medical experts say.

63 percent involved people under 39 years of age, of whom roughly one-third were hospitalized.

" "Younger Canadians are not invincible" to the disease, Tam warned, noting that it is not only the elderly who are at risk of serious health problems if infected.
She pointed out that, of the cases of COVID-19 reported to public health last week, 63 percent involved people under 39 years of age, of whom roughly one-third were hospitalized.

"“It is safe to go out to nightclubs again,” Guignard said. “The smaller nightclubs are more like lounges now — they’ve shut down dance floors with tables and planters and whatnot. Some of them are starting to serve food, others are just trying to play music and be a place to relax. Think more of a VIP experience.”
