the majority of sports betting in prisons (state and federal) is done with "parlay cards"

the cards are handmade, usually a clerk (prisoner of course) in the front office will type them up and run them off on the copier......standard cards are 3-team to 10 team with as Wilheim said terrible odds.......

the betting lines are taken from the newspaper...........so naturally they are stale.........

straight up action is usually with no juice.......(the concept of vig is foreign to many convicts, mostly blacks)

a common misconception is that there is no money in prison.........WRONG, WRONG, WRONG...........cash is smuggled in along with other contraband........usually by the guards....

the general form of currency is tobacco and food items (from the commissarry) whatever the cost of the item at the commissarry equals the amount in currency....

normally paraly tickets are paid off in commissary up to a certain amount then they are paid in "green money" (cash)..........you do not have a choice in what food items you get paid.......(certain hygiene items are usually not included because they can be obtained for free from the prison).....

on the prison hierachy the bookie is highly regarded along with the "store-man" aka loan shark.........

football is the predominant betting sport.........though horses are popular in some regions

btw

stiff rates are very low in prison..........very low

Other than myself and Jay C I am not sure who else has done any kind of serious time. I am not talking a weekend in the county or even anmonth for drunk drinking. Talking state and or federal time.

The answer is yes. It can also be as simple or as easy as a guy wants to make it. Cotact wit the outside world is pretty simple, so line updates and the like are not hard to get.

Not to mention there are guys who have plenty of money in jail. Not physically on them, but can get it pretty easilly. SO that isn't the problem. Generally the problem is interest and volume.

It is much easier to play cards (mostly spades) for cash. Sports betting is anopvelty for the most part unless you are hard core, and most guys in jail are more into crime than gambling.

So success is defiately a relative term I would say.

JJ,

Judging from what you were posting last night, I'd have to say you know something about getting "stiffed". :hump:

chess and checkers

Are the two most popular way's of gambling. As for sports it's usually on prison inmates basketball teams, baseball teams and boxing. Never saw any organized gambling on sports usually just between prisoners on the tv games. Gambling is a distant second to drugs.
