One of the things Obama wants to do is bring internet sportbooks legally to the US (so they can be regulated and taxed)..so maybe the climate will get better.

At the least he will not take a hardline approach to gambling as the Bush administration has.

It all comes down to "taxes" boys - the govt wants their share too - that's why they go after books - anyone who makes money owes the govt one way or the other ....

Just wait til Obama takes office :nohead:

betting drives sports and all the bucks they make and it is just a matter of time before it is legalized everywhere. vegas will fight it becoming legalized but it will happen because of public demand.

The legality, at least in part comes down to enforcability. The government, in keeping with usurping other freedoms justifies it by pointing out the number of degenerates who lost everything to a gambling addiction. They're doing it to protect us.

I don't know you, so please don't take this personally, but I think your voiced fears of how others might feel, if you informed them of your gambling, is your stuff. I tell people quite liberally, and most people find it interesting. They go on to ask questions, serious questions that suggest they are interested in trying it. I'm an MD and I have other doctor, lawyer professional friends and they too talk about it liberally.

I'm older (I was in the army during the Nam mess) and it might have to do with age, in that most of my friends are 40-60. At 20, I can remember telling friends that I was going to LV or Lake Tahoe to play poker all night and bet sports during the day, Saturday/Sunday.

You might get more responses if you take this to the "offshore forum/online sports betting" area.

Lastly, try telling a few people that you feel comfortable with and see how they respond. You might be surprised.

The current odds/lines for every major sporting event are found in the sport section of every major news paper (daily)

(I wonder why?)

you are assuming that the gvt. is a pillar of ethics, which is the furthest thing from the truth. just because a group of politicians(most of them are liers and cheaters themselves) say that sports gambling is evil (except if you happen to be in nevada, then its not evil), that doesn't mean that it makes sense. alcohol used to be evil during the bootlegging days' but so many people drank anyway, so now its not "evil" anymore.don't think that all laws make sense. many relgious groups will tell a fantasy story that an invisible man sits on a cloud and will punish all the people who bet on sports outside of nevada but will reward all people who bet in church bingo, because somehow that is good gambling. i think that the puritanical vision of life has influenced the laws of the land. maybe the new administration will loosen the gambling laws, though they have much bigger fish to fry.

someone can legally get drunk, then drive and kill innocents on the road. but if lose a bet, the only one that suffers is you. what is the bigger evil, i ask you.

The posters' initial question was if sportsbetting was legal. Not if it's unethical, widespread, strictly enforced, etc.

The simple answer is that it is illegal in all states except for Nevada as far as I know.

Well, it's obvious, isn't it?

All this talk about lines and spreads are for the fine people and tourists in the beautiful State of Nevada!

That's the only reason journalists, ESPN, et al talk about them.

It's all about Nevada.

Next question?

(ps - I live in GA too)

ok so all the sports stations, journalists, and media only make their shows for people living in the state of nevada??? haha. when they have those sports interactive polls live in espn, they show map and only like 5 people vote literally from nevada. like i said in thread. lets be realistic. like someone said above the spread is strictly for sports gambling. they are not creating these spreads for bulletin board material. fucking pete rose cant even get in all of fame because he was sportsbettor. its getting punished still for what he did over 20 years ago. but yet these same sports media that disband rose reference the spread of games all year long. we have players that do cocaine, steriods, smoke weed, beat their girlfriends, even murder. but yet they are still allowed to play. but someone wagers on dog fights and wagers on sports is cast out!!!!? come on guys. im just confused about what standards do we have in this country. because if we think gambling is wrong, then it should be wrong. no references to it. no promotion of it. including horse racing and boxing. it shouldnt be automatically ok because we cross an invisible state line. and please dont get me started on state lotteries. but then if we are ok with gambling in this country, then it should be officially legal in all states. who cares even if a player wagers on other games. as long as its not his games. i mean i think it was dishonest what doneghy done. but lets think about it. hes facing stricter penalties than if a police was called because doneghy beat his wife. sports just like anything in vegas is a game. its all a game. so we punish a man harsher over a game, than we would against crimes on humanity. can anybody explain this. intelligent response only. i agree with poster above one of the reasons is , its all about taxes

Those of you that use online sports books, do you recommend any in particular. I am looking for a site with really easy cash-in/cash out process. I am skeptical of the sites which make you purchase pre-paid phone cards, etc.

Thanks in advance!
