I hope so, but we're in the toughest group by far. Mexico is probably the top concacaf team, and Jamaica and Honduras will both be very tough matches. With Mexico in the group they are pretty much competing for one spot in the next round with Jamaica and Honduras. That won't be easy and they will have to finish MUCH better than they did against St Vincent.
They can hang with anyone in concacaf though. They could beat both USA and Mexico and I wouldn't be surprised at all.
This team will only go as far as De Guzman carries it. He is one of the best Canadian players I have ever seen, and will be relied upon to feed the weak crop of scorers we have. Guys like Gerba, De Rosario, Radzinski, and Friend do not have the talent to make individual plays against these teams. It will be upto De Guzman to create space for them with his passing and ball handling ability. The kid also has a heck of a shot.
I would say chances are less than 50-50 that we get out of the next round, but if we get a couple of lucky bounces, perhaps a few home games in the rain, we definitely got a shot. Oh yah, and we absolutely can't get screwed by the refs... we don't have the talent to overcome blown calls.
Sleung, I hope you are right about it being Canada's time as this is clearly are best team ever led by Deguzman, DeRo, Hutch and Friend.... But unfortunatley we have been put in the group of death for this first round with Mexico, Honduras and Jamaica, and only two teams moving on to the final round. That is 3 of the top 4 Concacaf teams (with exception of USA) in one group plus a decent Jamaican team to round out the 4. The other two groups are much much weaker. This is Concacaf President Jack Warner at his best to get his native Trinidad and Tobago back in the World Cup. Mexico has shown lately that they can be beaten, Canada and Honduras always play close games together so that could be a tossup, Jamaica has a lot of talent but what team will show up?? Expect a loud and very pro Canada crowd tonight for a change as those crazy TFC supporters have joined together with Team Canada supporters (The Voyageurs) to sell out BMO field. Should be an entertaining game to watch, I think we take down the Jamaicans tonight though and get started on the right foot unlike 4 years ago.
