"with respect to recruiting at Florida, Its like getting laid at ASU. if you can't recruit to G'ville, you've got problems. If you can't get laid at ASU, you got problems."

Ah shit Win, just wasted a keyboard spilling my coffee after reading that, can't stop laughing.

Coach, who in their right mind thinks a coach from the MWC can compete in the SEC....Really??? It's dog eat dog recruiting in the south, that man won't have a chance.

~T~

saban had no deep southern ties...all WV, OH, MI and has done just fine
meyer was at utah, and bowling green before that...trophies
spurrier coached at duke and the tb bandits...trophies
richt was never a hc before...he's 2nd behind bama in conference wins L7 years
malzahn's only hc job was arkansas state...won sec
freeze hc at lambuth and arkansas state...i believe he's the winningest ATS coach in america right now
fulmer was never a hc before...trophies

mcelwain recruited plenty of kids from down south while at Bama...and won a national title as OC. then he resurrects (well, creates) a program in just 2 years at CUS...that's a better resume than a lot of successful sec coaches came in with. As a recruiter at Bama he snagged Clinton-Dix and Jesse Williams on defense and a few other guys like Dee Hart who is likely MWC offensive POY that transferred with him to CSU.

he gives UF exactly what they want...head coaching success rebuilding a program, history of success in SEC, proven ability to recruit in SEC, ties to some great coaches for hiring purposes (obviously saban disciple), and maybe most importantly....he's an offensive mind not a defensive mind. Maybe the most similar coach would be gus malzahn but with more d1 HC experience and not a bible thumper.

but he's definitely not a "splash" hire but neither was urban at fla or saban at lsu. they were successful coaches outside of the sec that had to prove their worth in the best conference in ncaaf

Well, according to ESPN, he's the leading man. That'll be one hell of a frying pan to jump into, lol.

Strong rumor is a Neb overture has been sent to Jim Tressel.

That's about the 1 name I will absolutely rule out. From what I've heard, there was interest last year, but Board of Regents blocked firing Bo...perhaps why the BOR was kept in the dark last year.

Rumor is Nebraska is locked on it's guy and it will be announced soon.

Was sitting in the airport waiting for a delayed flight. If you've ever walked around campus at ASU or USC or UCLA, there's PYT's all over the place. If you can't get lucky there, you've got problems!!!

One of my sisters did grad school at Tempe, so I've been there, LOL. ASU has some of the most gorgeous coeds to walk the planet, and lots of them. Still a funny line. GL and keep 'em coming.

RT, spot on. Basically he is a safe, safe hire. Word is he is going to keep basically the entire D staff (Durkin as DC, Robinson as DB coach, Lawing at DL) and Summers as the OL coach. I'd be very happy w/ this. It will help secure some of the recruits who have been holding out (there are two 5-star DE's that want to come to UF but are waiting on the hire). He's not a "splash", as you say, but he is certainly a great hire (imo). I'd be happy with it. And honestly, there really aren't too many rising stars out there. It appears the established coaches are staying put.

Jim Tressel to Nebraksa would be great! Isn't he the President at Akron now?

Whooooooooops:

"Florida's negotiations with Colorado State football coach Jim McElwain have reached an impasse, sources tell Yahoo Sports.

The sticking point in the talks to make McElwain the Gators' next head football coach is the $7.5 million buyout clause in McElwain's current contract with CSU. According to sources, Colorado State administration is 'not budging' on the buyout and that has forced Florida officials to reassess the situation."

sounds like a trumped up reason to me. Gators were #6 in nation last year with $75M in football revenue .... if they're going to let a 7.5M buyout (which they knew about going into talks) stop them from a hire, they need to be looking for the next Ron Zook

RT, you catch that interview of the UAB player on ESPN2 earlier this evening? Man, you talk about pissed off, and he and the rest of the team should be. I guess I took too long a nap somewhere along the trail, but I forgot Watson Brown was driving the bus down there. Since I played at Vandy, don't have to tell ya that name rings a bell or two, lol.

Foley is known for being cheap. That's why you're seeing all these stories about UF's facilities falling behind (and they were among the best in all of CFB not too long ago). He's failed to make the upgrades when needed and has done multiple bandaid fixes.

I've read several different reports about the buyout....with one being McElwain could leave on a reduced buyout if a "dream job" (i.e. major program) came calling. UF also offered to play CSU in Gainesville as part of the buyout.

Not really sure what's going on w/ the whole situation, but it appears McElwain is the guy Foley wants. My issue is I'd like to know who the hell else he contacted...if any? I'm sure there were feelers to some of the established coaches, but who else among the "realistic" candidates were contacted?

Curious if Foley would look at a guy like Fedora at UNC? Or a mid major guy like Mark Hudspeth at UL Lafayette?

Fedora coached at UF under Zook. I'm sure he's been considered.

As a Gator fan, Hudspeth is my top choice outside of the "established" big-name coaches. I love the guy. Look up his youtube video of him bench pressing 370lbs. It's great!

OK, you guys are smoking crack! Fedora, REALLY!!! Call me out of line here, but that guy has no business being a head coach at any major university. I'd shit in the middle of my couch, and it's some damn good Italian leather, if Fedora got that job. He's destined for another co-od job imo. Yoooooooooooooooowsa!!!

Why should CSU let McElwain out of a contract they just negotiated earlier this year? This is a two way street, if CSU wanted to fire McElwain they would have to pay him $7 million and if he wants to leave someone needs to pay them that same amount. If Fla really wants this guy, then they need get out their check books, they knew the deal beforehand. Lame move imo as now they gonna cause a rift between Mac and CSU if they balk over the buyout.

Yeah, good point.....they don't let him out, or rather, Florida doesn't buy him out, how's that gonna play going forward? I don't understand how the AD for Florida flies out to Colorado to meet with the guy and his wife, spend two freakin days out there, and this shit happens. I might have to stop wagering on college sports, lol.

McElwain is the Florida hire. It will be confirmed today. As far as Nebraska and Michigan are concerned, good luck. Ohio State, Michigan State, and Wisconsin look pretty solid for the next few years as far as athletes and recruiting goes. Who would want to take those teams head on with the mentality of "win now or you are out" that both Nebraska and Michigan have?

Excellent point about recruiting. Most of the recruits would much rather play in Southern California, Arizona, Texas, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida than in the cold, frozen , boring Midwest. Sure, teams like Ohio State, Notre Dame, and the current "it" teams (Michigan State and Wisconsin right now) will get their share of recruits, but the pickings will be slim for everyone else.

I think Jim Tressel has nothing to lose and all to gain. He is still young in comparison and has kept involved in football both at the professional and college levels.
