There's a simple solution for any Division I school to guarantee themselves a spot in a BCS bowl: Don't lose any games. Doesn't matter where they are ranked in a preseason bowl, a DI team that finishes undefeated with be in a BCS game.

Ok, fair enough...but say Penn St, Florida and Va Tech all go unbeaten...then what?

Reverts back to what I posted a few weeks back and got toasted....Penn St's schedule will keep them out of the title game if they are one of 3 unbeatens...

Even if Florida and Texas both go 12-1 (Texas loses to Oklahoma, Flordia to Georgia...for arguments sake) and even if Penn St goes 12-0....who goes?

It all depends on what Penn State's opponents do this season. If Penn State is 12-0 and they beat an Ohio State team who goes 11-1 and beats a USC who also goes 11-1, it holds a lot more weight with PSU. If this happens, the chances of them making it to the title game if everybody else has a loss is 100%.

That's a lot of worry over hypotheticals that are extremely unlikely to happen. Over the last 15 years more than 2 teams have finished the regular season undefeated exactly once, in 2004.

Let them play the games before you get all worked about "what ifs." When everything shakes out the most likely thing to happen is that there will be only one or two undefeated teams.

I agree 100%. It'll be extremely interesting if Penn St goes 12-0...Ohio St 8-4, USC 10-2...very interesting to see at that point what does indeed happen...

To be honest...my "what if's" are more like "I hope so's!" I love CFB...but it is so F'd up with it's current system it makes me sick...the excuses about school and being student-athletes first are not true...I played at a MAJOR D-I institution and the focus was 100% on football!

Even when I played in the late 90's we were still jealous of the lower levels tat had a playoff system...still frustrated...all these years later!

Um, OK... try 'splaining that to the 2004 Auburn team.

I'm a big USC fan and I agree that with the pollsters leaving them out, being they played a chicken shit OOC schedule vs. LA- Monroe, 1-AA Citadel and Louisiana Tech, but they did go undefeated that year.

there IS no built in advantage...that is a myth. If you compare computer rankings (where there is no starting bias) and human polls at the end of the year you will see no advantage is gained by being ranked highly early on.

If what you say is true, then you would expect two things to necessarily be true, and there is no way to get around this: (1) teams that are ranked the highest to start the season should be OVERranked in the human polls relative to the computer polls and (2) the opposite should be true for teams that were lightly regarded out of the gate. Since neither 1 or 2 is true your theory is incorrect.

It is a widely believed myth and will continue to be...they may affect where you are ranked in late september or October but since they don't determine anything until after the reg season is over, who gives a $hit?

While I'm at it another widely believed myth is that non-bcs teams get a raw deal in the human polls. Again, easily disproved as well.

Auburn played in the Sugar Bowl that season, a BCS game.
