Preview: Falcons (7-3) at Broncos (7-3)

Date: November 20, 2015 9:30 PM EDT

Control of the Mountain West Conference Mountain Division is in the hands of Air Force.

The Falcons can thank New Mexico and an unlikely stumble by Boise State for being in position to potentially win its first conference title in nearly 20 years.

Having won five of six, the Falcons (7-3, 5-1 MW) travel to Boise State on Friday night needing wins over the Broncos and New Mexico in the final two weeks to wrap up a division title and spot in the Mountain West championship game on Dec. 5. Air Force went into last week needing to avoid a stumble against Utah State and needing to get help from others to have the division race in its control.

Air Force did the first part, knocking off Utah State 35-28 at home. And then late Saturday night watched New Mexico pull off the unlikely upset of the Broncos in Boise to leave the Falcons as the only one-loss team in the Mountain Division.

'I'd definitely say we've all kind of caught our second wind here to finish out the season,' safety Weston Steelhammer told reporters. 'We're taking it one game at a time and we've got a pretty big one this week.'

Boise State (7-3, 4-2) was in the position where three wins to close the season would land the Broncos in the conference title game for the second straight season. But the mistake-prone Broncos couldn't overcome four turnovers and too many dropped passes against the Lobos, losing just their third conference game at home since 1998.

'Probably the best thing for us is having a short week,' Boise State coach Bryan Harsin said. 'After reviewing the game, we just hurt ourselves. It really came down to a game of inches with a few catches here or there.'

Here's what else to watch as the Falcons and Broncos meet for the fourth time:

PASSING FANCY: One place where Boise State looks to have an advantage is in the passing game.

While Air Force is 12th nationally in total defense, giving up 306 yards per game, the Falcons have been vulnerable through the air. Utah State threw for 364 yards and four touchdowns last week and Boise State quarterback Brett Rypien will put it up as many times as necessary. Rypien had 74 attempts last week against New Mexico.

CATCH EVERYTHING: Overshadowed by the numerous dropped passes last week was a record-setting day by Boise State wide receiver Thomas Sperbeck. The junior caught a school- and Mountain West-record 20 passes for 281 yards in the loss to New Mexico. The 20 receptions were the most by any player in the FBS in one game this season.

Sperbeck is tied for 15th in the country with 69 catches, but had just five receptions through the first two games. He has 30 catches for 444 yards in the past two games.

PROTECTION FIRST: Granted the Air Force offense is largely based around its run game, but after 10 games the Falcons are the only team in the country that has yet to allow a quarterback sack. Karson Roberts, who has started the last eight games after Nate Romine was lost for the season due to an injury, has attempted 91 passes without getting sacked.

The last time Air Force allowed a sack came in Boise - in the fourth quarter of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl last December.

SENIOR CLASS: Boise State will honor 20 seniors in its final home game on Friday night. The group needs two wins the rest of the season to become the 14th consecutive senior class at Boise State to finish with at least 40 career victories.

Essential Week 12 betting notes for college football's top games

A Cowboys win would be the program’s 13th in a row, matching the record set from 1944-46.

Purdue Boilermakers at Iowa Hawkeyes (-23, 56.5)

* Purdue is tied for third in the conference with 19 takeaways and has forced eight of those over the last three contests.

* Iowa has posted 11 perfect seasons since Kinnick Stadium was opened in 1929, but only the 2003 team, which was 10-3, won seven home games – a mark this year’s team will try to emulate. The Hawkeyes have gone 2-4 ATS in their six home games so far this season.

(15) Michigan Wolverines at Penn State Nittany Lions (+3.5, 41.5)

* Senior quarterback Jake Rudock was named the Walter Camp Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for a career-high 440 yards and a Michigan-record six touchdown passes in the win over Indiana.

* Penn State has won four of the last five meetings (4-1 ATS) with the Wolverines, including the last three games at Beaver Stadium (3-0 ATS), and hopes to deliver a victory on Senior Day to finish with a perfect record at home for the first time since 2008.

Florida Atlantic Owls at (8) Florida Gators (-31, 46.5)

* The Owls scored 44 points in the overtime loss to Tulsa in their opener, but have scored more than 20 only twice in nine games since.

* The eighth-ranked Gators have won three straight, including a pair of close games against sub-.500 teams the last two weeks, and must take care of the Owls before a date with rival Florida State and a trip to the SEC title game.

(13) North Carolina Tar Heels at Virginia Tech Hokies (+5, 61.5)

* A North Carolina victory Saturday (or a Pittsburgh loss to Louisville) sends the Tar Heels to the ACC title game against top-ranked Clemson, and the Tar Heels come in averaging 42 points per game while not committing a turnover in their past three games.

* The Hokies have won four of the past five meetings with the Tar Heels and are 9-2 (6-5 ATS) against North Carolina since joining the ACC in 2004.

Chattanooga Mocs at Florida State Seminoles (Off, Off)

* The Mocs, ranked ninth in the FCS Coaches Poll, topped The Citadel 31-23 last weekend to win the Southern Conference crown and gain an automatic bid in the upcoming FCS playoffs.

* Florida State owns the nation's longest home winning streak at 20 games. The Seminoles are 11-9 ATS in those 20 home games.

(14) Houston Cougars at Connecticut Huskies (Off, Off)

* Kyle Postma went 21-of-33 for 236 yards and a touchdown and ran for 49 yards and another score in the 35-34 comeback win against Memphis, and will start if Greg Ward Jr. (2,176 yards, 13 passing TDs, 810 rushing yards, 16 rushing TDs) is not healthy enough to play.

* UConn won back-to-back games before its bye week and needs one win to become bowl eligible for the first time in five years. The Huskies have been inconsistent offensively and will rely on a strong defense to keep the game close.

(9) Michigan State Spartans at (2) Ohio State Buckeyes (-13.5, 53)

* If recent trends are anything to go by, this is shaping up to be a promising result for Spartans backers. The visiting team has gone 6-1 ATS in the past seven contests between these schools.

* Junior running back Ezekiel Elliott has compiled 15 consecutive 100-yard outings while etching his name among the school's best-ever backs. Elliott has rushed for 1,425 yards and 16 touchdowns this season and ranks third in school history with 3,565 yards -- he needs 204 to pass former Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George for second on Ohio State's all-time list.

(21) Northwestern Wildcats at (20) Wisconsin Badgers (-10, 40)

* Northwestern has no chance of overtaking Iowa, but remains on track to set a single-season school record for victories if it can win its final two contests and its bowl game.

* Wisconsin has given up a total of three touchdowns in six home games and is allowing only five points per game at Camp Randall this season.

(17) LSU Tigers at (25) Ole Miss Rebels (-6.5, 56)

* The Tigers will try to avoid their first three-game losing streak in 16 years when they visit Ole Miss on Saturday in the 104th edition of the rivalry. "It's a time where, as a coach, you just bury your head and you go to work and you coach like there's no tomorrow and it's time to step up," Tigers coach Les Miles said in his weekly press conference. "I think our guys understand that. They understand crisis."

* The Rebels, who are mired in a three-way tie with the Tigers and Arkansas Razorbacks for second in the SEC West, can still claim the division if they win out and Alabama loses its finale at Auburn. Ole Miss has had two weeks to ****** a 53-52 overtime loss to Arkansas at home.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons at (1) Clemson Tigers (-29, 48)

* Wake Forest is looking to snap a pair of losing streaks - a four-game skid this season and a six-game losing streak to Clemson that dates back to a 12-7 win in 2008.

* Clemson's current 13-game winning streak (7-6 ATS) is tied for the second-longest in school history. The team won 15 straight in the late 1940s.

(24) USC Trojans at (22) Oregon Ducks (-4.5, 72.5)

* USC's senior quarterback Cody Kessler is one of five finalists for the Unitas Award, has completed 213-of-310 passes (68.7 percent) for 2,715 yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions, and triggers an offense that is averaging 36.4 points and 465 yards per game.

* The Ducks come into this one off an impressive 38-36 victory at Stanford and lead the Pac-12 in scoring (41.8), rushing offense (297.4) and total offense (532.6).

UCLA Bruins at (18) Utah Utes (-2, 56.5)

* UCLA's freshman quarterback Josh Rosen has been solid with 2,902 yards, 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions while junior running back Paul Perkins has rushed for 1,082 yards and 10 touchdowns and his 3,230 career rushing yards rank third in school history.

* Utah's senior running back Devontae Booker underwent knee surgery to repair meniscus cartilage damage and will miss the rest of the regular season.

Charleston Southern Buccaneers at (3) Alabama Crimson Tide (Off, Off)

* Charleston Southern has rushed for at least 159 yards in every game this season and topped 200 yards seven times, while Alabama has allowed only two opponents to surpass 100 yards on the ground.

* Alabama has won seven straight – including four victories against teams ranked in the top 20 at the time of the game – to take charge of the SEC West and put itself in position for a return trip to the national semifinals.

(19) Navy Midshipmen at Tulsa Golden Hurricane (+13, 69)

* The Midshipmen have not started 9-1 since Roger Staubach was under center in 1963, and Keenan Reynolds is giving the team another standout at quarterback while playing a different style in the triple-option offense.

* The Golden Hurricane are having a hard time getting stops but the offense continues to keep the team in games. Tulsa is averaging 41.3 points in its last four games – 2-2 – and quarterback Dane Evans threw eight of his 19 touchdown passes in that span.

(25) Mississippi State Bulldogs at Arkansas Razorbacks (-4, 57.5)

* Bulldogs quarterback Dak Prescott has thrown 18 touchdown passes against two interceptions, the best ratio in the nation.

* The Razorbacks have turned their season completely around by winning four straight games (3-1 ATS), including a stunner at LSU last week.

(10) Baylor Bears at (4) Oklahoma State Cowboys (-1, 77)

* The Bears, who had been the top Big 12 team at No. 6 last week, dropped four spots the No. 10 when the latest rankings were released on Tuesday and likely will have to be content to go for another impressive one-loss campaign. “We're actually in the situation now where our vision is pretty tunnel,” Baylor coach Art Briles told reporters. “It's Stillwater this Saturday at (7:30 p.m. ET), and whatever happens from there happens, and I think we all know that it's pretty hard to predict what’s going to happen. We have to fight hard and get a win (at Oklahoma State).”

* A Cowboys win would be the program’s 13th in a row, matching the record set from 1944-46. They are 8-4 ATS over the course of their last 12.

Boston College Eagles at (5) Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-15.5, 42.5)

* The Eagles lead FBS in total defense, holding opponents to an average of 237 yards, but sit last in total offense (277).

* Notre Dame RB C.J. Prosise (concussion) is expected to return after sitting out last week.

(11) TCU Horned Frogs at (7) Oklahoma Sooners (Off, Off)

* The No. 18 Horned Frogs won't know if QB Trevone Boykin (ankle) can play until late in the week while coach Gary Patterson announced on Wednesday that WR Josh Doctson (wrist) will miss the final two games of the regular season.

* The Sooners are thriving on offense behind the standout trio of junior quarterback Baker Mayfield (3,082 yards, 31 touchdown passes), sophomore running back Samaje Perine (972 yards, 12 rushing touchdowns) and senior receiver Sterling Shepard (61 catches for 1,003 yards and nine touchdowns).

Cal Golden Bears at (15) Stanford Cardinal (-11, 64.5)

* Cal has been outscored 101-30 in the past two meetings against Stanford (0-2 ATS) but has the firepower to keep pace with the Cardinal offense Saturday.

* If the Cardinal, No. 11 in the latest playoff rankings, can record their sixth straight victory over the rival Golden Bears, they’ll clinch the Pac-12 North Division and play for the conference title at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Dec. 5.

Colorado Buffaloes at (23) Washington State Cougars (-15, 62.5)

* The Buffaloes lost much more than a game Friday as quarterback Sefo Liufau suffered a Lisfranc foot injury in the second quarter and will miss the next 6-8 months of football, including spring drills. Freshman Cade Apsay filled in admirably, completing 18-of-23 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns, but once again it wasn’t enough for Colorado.

* Four of Washington State’s wins have come via fourth-quarter comebacks, including last week’s triumph at UCLA in which Gabe Marks’ diving touchdown reception with 3 seconds to play gave the Cougars’ a 31-27 victory.

Big profits from betting these NCAAF small-conference teams

Brandon Doughty is one of the top quarterbacks in the country. He’s fourth in the nation in passing yards with 3,583 on the year.

Team to watch: Georgia State Panthers

This week: Pick’em vs. South Alabama Jaguars

Looking at the side-by-side comparison of these two teams, it's easy to see that South Alabama has the better overall record this season. Yet, this game is listed as a PK and we believe it is for good reason as the Panthers have a matchup that we believe they can exploit.

The Panthers offense, in particular their passing game has been firing on all cylinders recently averaging 350.2 yards per contest over their last five games. However we believe it will be their defense that is the deciding factor in this contest. The Georgia State defense has allowed just an average of 232.4 yards through the air over their last five contests. They have also been great at forcing turnovers as they have caused opponents to turn the ball over eight times in their last five contests.

That could prove problematic for the Jaguars, as they have turned the ball over a total of 10 times over that same span and rank 116th in the country averaging 2.1 turnover per game. If the Panthers can win the turnover battle in this contest, they have a great shot to win this game.

Team to beware of: FIU Golden Panthers

This week: +16.5 vs. Western Kentucky Hilltoppers

The Golden Panthers were outplayed in every facet in their loss to Marshall this past weekend. Florida International finished with a total of just 209 yards for the game which was nearly 260 less than their opponents. They simply couldn't get anything going offensively and that will no doubt hurt them in this contest against one of the most prolific offenses in the country.

Brandon Doughty is one of the top quarterbacks in the country. He’s fourth in the nation in passing yards with 3,583 on the year and is ranked in the Top 25 in passing touchdowns in a career with 97 and ranks in the Top 40 in career in passing yards with 11,383.

If the Golden Panthers have another showing like they did last week against Marshall, this game could get ugly early. We don't believe they will have the offense to keep up with the Hilltoppers on the scoreboard in this one.

Total team: Navy Midshipmen

This week: 68 at Tulsa Golden Hurricanes

This matchup could be one of the higher-scoring contests of the week. There’s no secret that the Tulsa defense has been one of the worst in the country. The Golden Hurricane have had a hard time stopping even the most anemic of offenses and in this contest they have the unenviable task of trying to stop one of the most complex.

The triple-option is an incredibly dangerous offense as it forces defenders to play extremely disciplined defense - something that the Golden Hurricanes are capable of doing. Keenan Reynolds should have no issues moving the ball in this contest.

On the other side, what Tulsa lacks in defense they certainly make up for on the offensive end. They are one of Conference USA's most prolific offensive teams and can move the ball both on the ground and through the air. Navy doesn't have a lock down defense as its talent pool in much smaller than other programs. Tulsa should be able to move the ball and go score-for-score with the Midshipmen to pile points on the scoreboard.

Rain expected at Ohio Stadium Saturday

Weather forecasts predict a windy, rain day as the Michigan State Spartans visit the Ohio State Buckeyes Saturday afternoon.

There is an 84 percent possibility of rain showers during game time while wind is expected to blow toward the north end zone at around 16 miles per hour during the game.

Temperatures in Columbus are projected to be in the mid-40s under overcast skies before the rain is expected to move in.

The Buckeyes are currently 14-point home favorites while the total is at 53.

Chance of rain, thunderstorms in Florida Saturday

According to weather forecasts, there is a 51 percent possibility of rain and thunderstorms in Gainesville, FL when the Florida Gators host the Florida Atlantic Owls Saturday afternoon.

The rain is expected early on while the thunderstorms are expected to hit later on in the game.

The Gators are currently listed as 31-point home favorites while the total is 46.5.

FSU riding longest home winning streak in the Nation

The Florida State Seminoles are riding the longest home winning streak in the country as they bring a 20-game run into Saturday's meeting with the Chattanooga Mocs.

That hasn't necessarily translated into success at the betting window, however, as the Noles have gone just 11-9 against the spread in those 20 home games.

This season, FSU has gone 4-2 ATS and has actually covered the spread in its last three games at Doak Campbell Stadium.

The spread for this clash isn't on the board at every shop, but it can be found at a few outlets with FSU as a 30.5-pont home favorite.

The road team is the hot bet in Purdue-Iowa contests

The visiting team has gone 5-0 against the spread (4-1 straight up) in the previous five meetings between the Purdue Boilermakers and Iowa Hawkeyes.

The Big Ten rivals meet at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City with the Hawkeyes as massive 23-point home favorites Saturday afternoon.

The previous two meetings were both at Purdue with Iowa winning 38-14 as 16.5-point favorites in 2013 and 24-10 as 7.5-point favorites one season ago.

Penn State cashing bets in meetings with Michigan

The Penn State Nittany Lions have fared quite well in recent meetings with the Michigan Wolverines, posting a record of 4-1 straight up and against the spread in their last five meetings.

Included in there are three-straight wins at home in Beaver Stadium, the most recent of which was a 43-40 win as 2-point home dogs in 2013.

The two Big Ten schools square off at Beaver Stadium Saturday afternoon and while the Nittany Lions opened as 5.5-point home pups, that has since been adjusted to +3.5.

Missouri DT Beckner lost for season

Missouri freshman defensive tackle Terry Beckner Jr. will miss the rest of the season after tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee.

Beckner also suffered meniscus cartilage damage and a bone bruise in last Saturday's game against Brigham Young. He is expected to undergo surgery in early December.

The extent of the damage was discovered during an MRI exam, according to the school. Trainer Rex Sharp believes Beckner will be ready for fall camp in August.

Beckner was hurt on Missouri's final snap of the BYU game and was carted off the field.

Beckner was one of the top recruits in the nation last year. He started five games and recorded three sacks.

Utah RB Booker out for regular season

Utah senior running back Devontae Booker will miss at least the rest of the regular season after undergoing surgery to repair torn meniscus cartilage in his left knee, according to published reports.

Booker suffered the injury during last Saturday's double-overtime loss to Arizona. He is expected to be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks and that timetable could cause him to miss Utah's bowl game as well.

Booker has rushed for 1,261 yards and 11 touchdowns and has carried the Utah offense. He is averaging 26.8 carries per game and also ranks second on the team with 37 receptions.

Utah is in the mix for a spot in the Pac-12 title game and has a key contest with UCLA this Saturday. Junior Joe Williams is the likely starter in Booker's absence.

Booker tied a school record with his 14th career 100-yard rushing game last Saturday. Despite being in only his season at the school, he ranks third in school history with 2,773 rushing yards.

Ole Miss LB Nkemdiche hospitalized

Mississippi senior linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche remains in a hospital for undisclosed reasons will miss Saturday's game against LSU, his family and coach Hugh Freeze jointly announced via statement on Thursday.

Nkemdiche reportedly has been hospitalized since Monday. Neither the family nor school has provided details over what led to the action but said his condition isn't life-threatening.

Baylor QB Stidham questionable with back injury

Baylor quarterback Jarrett Stidham could miss Saturday's showdown at Oklahoma State because of a back injury.

Coach Art Briles said Stidham was not progressing in his recovery after being hurt last week. His status is up in the air in a game that could determine the postseason fate of the Bears.

"He's not as far along as what I'd like for him to be," Briles said Wednesday. "We'll see in the next day or two."

Stidham replaced Seth Russell following the Iowa State game following a season-ending injury to Baylor's starter. Stidham has played in all nine games with 1,007 yards, 11 touchdowns and two interceptions.

Baylor lists sophomore Chris Johnson as the backup quarterback.

Game of the Day: Michigan State at Ohio State
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Connor Cook and the Spartans opened as 13-point road underdogs for their visit to the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Michigan State Spartans at Ohio State Buckeyes (-13.5, 53)

The throwing shoulder of Michigan State senior quarterback Connor Cook promises to be a crucial element when the No. 9 Spartans visit No. 3 Ohio State in a Big Ten showdown on Saturday. Cook, who possesses a 32-4 record as a starter, injured his right shoulder in last Saturday's victory over Maryland and was pulled from the contest because he didn't have the arm strength to continue.

It's clear that Cook will attempt to play but unclear how proficient he will be against the sturdy Buckeyes' defense. "My shoulder is good," Cook said at a press conference. "I'm going to be ready to go so there is no issue with that." Ohio State has won 23 consecutive overall games and a record 30 consecutive conference games and sophomore quarterback J.T. Barrett is back in control as the starter. Barrett passed for 300 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 86 yards and two scores in last season's 49-37 win over the Spartans.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC.

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Buckeyes as 13-point home faves and the total opened at 52.5.

INJURY REPORT:

Spartans - QB Connor Cook (Probable, shoulder), DL Joel Heath (Questionable, leg), DB Jalen Watts-Jackson (Out for season, hip), S R.J. Williamson (Late Nov., bicep), OL Dennis Finley (Out for season, leg), CB Vayante Copeland (Out for season, back), LB Ed Davis (Out for season, knee).

Buckeyes - CB Marshon Lattimore (Probable, hamstring), LB Chris Worley (Questionable, undisclosed), WR Johnnie Dixon (Out indefinitely, knee), S Erick Smith (Out for season, knee), DB Cam Burrows (Out for season, foot), LB Nick Conner (Out for season, knee), WR Corey Smith (Out for season, leg), WR Noah Brown (Out for season, leg).

WEATHER: Temperatures in the mid-40s with an 84 percent chance of showers. Wind will blow toward the north endzone at around 13 miles per hour.

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "The Spartans will face the No. 2 ranked Buckeyes in Columbus this week, and an upset could put them right back in the playoff picture. Critics will say that the Buckeyes haven't played anybody, but with their next two games at home to Michigan State and on the road at Michigan, they have a chance to silence the doubters."

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (9-1 SU, 3-7 ATS, 5-5 O/U): Cook has passed for 2,482 yards, 21 touchdowns and just four interceptions and junior Tyler O'Connor (6-of-11 for 44 yards, one touchdown, one interception versus Maryland) is the backup. Senior wideout Aaron Burbridge is having a huge season with Big Ten-leading totals of 65 receptions and 1,021 receiving yards and he is just the seventh player in school history to reach 1,000 yards in a season. Senior defensive end Shilique Calhoun (25 career sacks, including a team-best 8.5 this season) and sophomore nose tackle Malik McDowell (10.5 tackles for losses) are stalwarts of a tough defensive line, while junior middle linebacker Riley Bullough (team-best 79 tackles) and sophomore safety Montae Nicholson (team-high three interceptions) are also key players.

ABOUT OHIO STATE (10-0 SU, 4-6 ATS, 2-8 O/U): Junior running back Ezekiel Elliott has compiled 15 consecutive 100-yard outings while etching his name among the school's best-ever backs. Elliott has rushed for 1,425 yards and 16 touchdowns this season and ranks third in school history with 3,565 yards -- he needs 204 to pass former Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George for second on Ohio State's all-time list. Junior defensive end Joey Bosa has a team-high 15 tackles for losses -- he has 49 in his career -- but has just four sacks while sophomore middle linebacker Raekwon McMillian has a team-best 97 tackles and sophomore defensive end Tyquan Lewis has a team-high 6.5 sacks.

TRENDS:

* Road team is 6-1 ATS in their last seven meetings.
* Underdog is 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings.
* Over is 5-1 in Spartans last six road games.
* Under is 4-0 in Buckeyes last four conference games.

CONSENSUS: Seventy-two percent of Covers users are backing the Spartans.

**Mississippi State at Arkansas**

-- As of early Friday afternoon, most books had Arkansas (6-4 straight up, 6-4 against the spread) installed as a five-point favorite with a total of 57.5 points. The Hogs were favored by four for most of the week before many spots adjusted to 4.5 on Thursday. The number moved to five around lunch (Eastern) on Friday. The Bulldogs were +170 on the money line (risk $100 to win $170).

-- This is a revenge game for the Razorbacks, who went to Starkville last year when Mississippi State was unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the country. Arkansas took a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter and never trailed until the Bulldogs went ahead 17-10 early in the fourth quarter on a 69-yard TD pass from Dak Prescott to Fred Ross. MSU would win 17-10, but the Hogs took the cash as 10-point underdogs. It was the third straight win for the Bulldogs in this rivalry.

-- Arkansas has won four in a row after thumping LSU by a 31-14 count last week at Tiger Stadium. The Razorbacks, who won outright as 6.5-point underdogs, are now 5-1 both SU and ATS in their last six outings. Bret Bielema’s team raced out to a 21-0 lead to the dismay of all those decked out in purple and gold in Red Stick. Brandon Allen’s 52-yard TD pass to Dominique Reed allowed the Hogs to draw first blood. Next, Alex Collins ripped off an 80-yard TD run and followed that with another end-zone scamper from five yards out late in the second quarter. When LSU trimmed the deficit to 24-14, Arkansas put the game on ice with a Jared Cornelius 69-yard TD run on an end-around play.

-- Collins rushed 16 times for 141 yards and two TDs at LSU. It was his eighth 100-yard rushing effort of the season and his fourth in a row. Collins, a true junior from Miami, is third in the SEC in rushing yards with 1,209. He has 14 rushing TDs and a 6.1 yards-per-carry average.

-- Allen has enjoyed a stellar senior season to zip the lips of his critics. Allen has completed 64.4 percent of his throws for 2,617 yards with a 22/6 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He lost his best WR Keon Hatcher to a season-ending injury in Week 2, but his favorite target rapidly became Drew Morgan. The junior wideout has had a breakout campaign. Morgan has a team-high 45 receptions for 639 yards and nine TDs. TE Hunter Henry has 37 catches for 490 yards and one TD, while Reed has 21 grabs for 425 yards and six TDs.

-- Mississippi State (7-3 SU, 6-4 ATS) saw its four-game winning streak snapped last week when Alabama came to Scott Field and dealt out a 31-6 shellacking as a seven-point road ‘chalk.’ The 37 combined points fell ‘under’ the 51.5-point total. On the opening drive for Dan Mullen’s squad, it advanced to Alabama’s one yard line only to get stuffed on fourth and goal. MSU would fail on fourth-down attempts twice more. Although the Bulldogs generated more total offense that ‘Bama (393-379), they never got into the end zone and had to settle for a pair of field goals from Westin Graves. Prescott threw for 300 yards, but he was intercepted once and only completed 22-of-43 passes. The senior signal caller, who leads MSU in rushing, was only able to gain 14 yards on the ground on 26 carries. Derrick Henry paced the Crimson Tide with 204 rushing yards, including TD runs of 74 and 64 yards.

-- Prescott is enjoying another terrific season. The Louisiana native has completed 64.7 percent of his passes for 2,651 yards with an incredible 18/2 TD-INT ratio. Prescott has run for 432 yards and seven scores.

-- Ross has a team-best 59 receptions for 662 yards and two TDs, while De’Runnya Wilson has 39 catches for 651 yards and eight TDs. Wilson sustained a neck injury in the loss to Alabama, but he’s listed as ‘probable’ for Arkansas.

-- Mississippi State has won three of its four road games this year, compiling a 2-2 spread record. As a road underdog during Mullen’s seven-year tenure, the Bulldogs have posted an 8-11 spread record.

-- Arkansas owns a 6-5 spread record in 11 games as a home favorite on Bielema’s watch.

-- The ‘under’ is 6-4 overall for the Bulldogs, 3-1 in their four previous road assignments. They have seen their games average a combined score of 50.4 points per game.

-- The ‘under’ is 6-4 overall for Arkansas, 3-3 in its home games. However, the ‘over’ has cashed at a 3-1 clip in its last four outings. The Hogs’ games have averaged combined scores of 62.3 PPG.

-- Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**SEC Nuggets**

-- Tennessee is a seven-point favorite at Missouri. The Tigers, who are 3-0 both SU and ATS vs. UT since coming into the SEC, found out coach Gary Pinkel was retiring at the end of the season just 24 hours before facing BYU at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. They responded in a big way, capturing a 20-16 win as 4.5-point underdogs. Senior RB Russell Hansbrough came into the year with 1,908 career rushing year, but he sprained his ankle in the first quarter of the season opener. He only missed one entire game, but Hansbrough had yet to produce a rushing effort of more than 74 yards. That changed in KC as Hansbrough was given 26 carries for a season-best 117 rushing yards. His previous high for carries this year was 16.

-- Since 2005, Missouri has been a home underdog 14 times. The Tigers are 5-9 ATS in those contests. As a road favorite on Butch Jones’s watch, UT has posted a 2-2 spread record.

-- Missouri will be without Terry Beckner, who suffered a season-ending knee injury against the Cougars. The true freshman DT had 27 tackles, eight tackles for loss, three sacks and two QB hurries.

-- The ‘under’ has cashed at a lucrative 9-1 clip in Missouri games this year.

-- If you missed it last weekend, I liked how UGA head coach Mark Richt was thinking. Assuming an exit strategy for him hasn’t already been formulated by his bosses at the school, it would have started last Saturday night had the Bulldogs lost at Auburn. Instead, UGA won and then Richt decided to take an impromptu trip out to Washington. You see, Georgia has a verbal commitment from Jacob Eason, a product of Lake Stevens, WA., who is the nation’s No. 1 ranked pro-style QB in the 2016 class. Richt had breakfast with Eason and his Dad and sent out a tweet with a picture of the two. Translation: This kid likes me. If you want him to come to UGA, you’d better not fire me. Hey, I like it. If Georgia wins out (IF!), it would finish 10-3 and possibly have its QB issues solved for the next four years (assuming Eason is as advertised). We hear all this talk about what a great man/human Richt is (and I agree), but the dude can reach deep for strategies in desperate times. Case in point: 2007. Richt and UGA had been getting spanked by the Gators for 17 years (2-15 record during that stretch to be exact), so Richt instructs his team in preparation for the game to raid the end zone upon scoring its first TD of the game. Say what?! I’d never heard of it before, either. And yes, the entire team left the sidelines and invaded the end zone to celebrate. Translation: We’ll take these penalties for this celebration, and we don’t care. We came to play today! Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno led the Bulldogs to a 42-30 win that day. I have always credited Richt’s moxy for that victory. Now of course, he paid for it the next season. Florida smashed UGA by a 49-10 count. In the final minute, Urban Meyer used all three of his timeouts to force UGA to stay on the field and absorb that pimpslap for an extra five minutes.

-- Georgia has two tough games left, including Saturday’s home game vs. Ga. Southern (then at Ga. Tech). The Dawgs are 13.5-point favorites. The Eagles own a 6-1 spread record in seven games as a double-digit underdog since 2010. The only non-cover was this year’s 44-0 loss at West Va. when starting QB Kevin Ellison was out due to a suspension.

-- Florida is a 31-point home ‘chalk’ vs. FAU. DE Alex McCallister is ‘out’ with a foot injury and there’s concern in Gainesville that McAllister might not be ready for next Saturday’s showdown vs. FSU.

-- Big hat tip to my guy Chris Vernon of Verno Show fame in Memphis. I’m a guest on his show every Friday and as I was endorsing my play on Arkansas this week, he let me in on these tidbits. Check out what these teams have done the week after they played Alabama this year. (We’re omitting Arkansas because it had an open date the week after falling in Tuscaloosa). Ole Miss looked horrible and never threated to cover in a 27-16 home win over Vandy as a 27-point ‘chalk.’ ULM lost 51-31 as a six-point home underdog vs. Ga. Southern. Georgia lost 38-31 at Tennessee as a 2.5-point favorite, while Texas A&M got spanked 23-3 at Ole Miss the week after losing to the Crimson Tide. LSU? As we saw last weekend, it was favored at home and got drilled by the Razorbacks, 31-14. Tennessee was an exception to this, but it was playing Kentucky (in football). The point is that teams are not only beaten up physically from Alabama’s style of play, but they’re also drained mentally and emotionally after giving their all against Nick Saban’s powerhouse program. Mississippi State falls into this mode in Fayetteville this weekend.

-- Vanderbilt is a 6.5-point home underdog vs. Texas A&M. The Commodores still have hopes of getting bowl eligible with a win over the Aggies and at Tennessee next Saturday. Derek Mason’s team is 3-1-1 ATS at home this year with three outright victories. The ‘Dores are 4-2-1 ATS as home ‘dogs since Mason took over.

-- Texas A&M has failed to cover the number in five straight games, winning outright just twice in that span (vs. South Carolina and vs. Western Carolina). With an underdog spot looming at LSU next week, a win in Nashville is imperative for Kevin Sumlin’s program. If the season ended with five losses in seven games, including one at Vandy, Sumlin would be under all sorts of pressure heading into 2016.

-- Ole Miss was favored by four for Saturday’s home game vs. LSU early in the week. However, the number was up to 6.5 by Thursday afternoon. The total was 56. The Tigers were +205 on the money line (risk $100 to win $205). A report in the Baton Rouge Advocate earlier this week stated that there were ‘strong indications’ that Les Miles is coaching for his job the next two weeks. I find that difficult to comprehend, especially with a $15 million buyout, but five straight losses to Alabama have the fans in Louisiana restless. We shall see…

MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS (9-1) at OHIO STATE BUCKEYES (10-0)
Ohio Stadium - Columbus, OH
Kickoff: Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line Ohio State -13.5, Total: 52.5

Reigning national champion No. 3 Ohio State hopes to stay undefeated Saturday in a showdown against visiting Big Ten rival No. 9 Michigan State.

The Spartans (9-1 SU and 3-7 ATS) bounced back from their sole loss of the season (Nov. 7 at Nebraska) to dispatch Maryland 24-7 last weekend, but lost star QB Connor Cook to injury in the second half. The Buckeyes (10-0 SU, 4-6 ATS), meanwhile, saw the return of their star QB J.T. Barrett from a suspension last weekend as they easily knocked off Illinois 28-3 to improve to a perfect 30-0 against Big Ten opponents in the regular season under head coach Urban Meyer.

The team has gotten the better of the Spartans in recent history with advantages of 13-4 SU and 10-7 ATS since 1992, and in their meeting last year, 14th-ranked Ohio State upset 8th-ranked Michigan State in a 49-37 shootout.

Neither team has been a profitable bet against the spread this season, but both have strong trends running in their favor to cover the spread this week. The Spartans are 13-2 ATS when playing against a team with a winning record over the past three seasons, and 10-1 ATS after having won five or six out of their previous seven games over the same time period.

The Buckeyes, meanwhile, are 18-5 ATS at home after outrushing an opponent by 200+ yards in the prior game since 1992, and 6-0 ATS in the past two seasons versus good teams (10+ PPG margin).

Michigan State will be closely watching QB Connor Cook, who was sidelined with a shoulder injury in last week’s victory over Maryland and is listed as probable for Saturday. Additionally, DL Joel Heath (leg) is questionable for the Spartans. Ohio State has two defensive additions to its injury report this week, as DB Marshon Lattimore (hamstring) and LB Chris Worley (undisclosed) are both questionable to play.

Under the leadership of Senior QB Connor Cook, Michigan State’s offense has put 32.9 PPG (42nd in nation) and averaged a respectable 406 total YPG (61st in FBS). Cook averages 31 passing attempts per game for 17.4 completions and 247.2 passing YPG, while throwing for 21 TD and just 4 INT. In the event Cook’s shoulder injury forces him to the sidelines again on Saturday, he’ll be spelled by backup QB Tyler O’Connor, who has thrown just 11 times for six completions, 44 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT.

The team would also want Cook to play in the game considering how well he played versus OSU last year when he threw for 358 yards with 2 TD and 0 INT. WR Aaron Burbridge has been Cook’s No. 1 option through the air this season, catching 64 passes for 1,011 yards and six touchdowns. RB Gerald Holmes has emerged as the late-season preferred option on the ground, running an average of 20 times for 100 YPG and a touchdown in each of his past two games.

The Spartans’ defense has been relatively solid on the season, allowing opponents 22.3 PPG (37th in nation) and 364 total YPG (46th in FBS). The team is especially effective against the run on the road, giving up just 100 rushing YPG on a meager 3.2 YPC.

Ohio State has managed to stay undefeated despite a quarterback competition that has only recently been settled, all while scoring an average of 36.4 PPG (28th in nation) and generating 453 YPG (33rd in FBS).

Sophomore QB J.T. Barrett has established himself as the starter over junior QB Cardale Jones, leading the team to victory over Illinois after serving a one-game suspension for operating a motor vehicle under the influence. Barrett has proven to be the more athletic option, complementing his eight passing touchdowns with an equal number of running scores. Last season in East Lansing, he lit up the Spartans for 386 total yards and five touchdowns (3 passing, 1 rushing).

Amid the instability of the QB position, junior RB Ezekiel Elliott has been the heart of the team’s offense and the third-best rusher in the nation. Elliott averages 22 rushes per game for 142.5 YPG and has contributed 16 TD. Last season against the Spartans, he ran for 154 yards on 23 carries (6.7 YPC) and a pair of touchdowns.

The Buckeyes’ defense has been elite this season, holding opponents to a meager 13.8 PPG (2nd in nation) and 298 YPG (9th in FBS). The team’s performance has peaked over the past several weeks, allowing just 8.0 PPG in their past three games.

LSU TIGERS (7-2) at OLE MISS REBELS (7-3)
Vaught-Hemingway Stadium - Oxford, MS
Kickoff: Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Ole Miss -6.5, Total: 56

No. 15 LSU and No. 22 Ole Miss will renew their SEC West rivalry on Saturday afternoon in Oxford, MS.

The Tigers (4-5 ATS) have lost two straight games to fall out of conference title contention and are 0-3 ATS on the road this season. The Rebels (5-4 ATS) are coming off a bye week following their heart-breaking 53-52 overtime home loss to Arkansas, but can still win their division with two victories and an Alabama loss to Auburn next week. These teams have played three straight close games where the home team has prevailed each time by six points or less.

Ole Miss won the last meeting in Oxford two years ago by a 27-24 score as a 9.5-point home underdog, and LSU was a 4.5-point home 'dog to the No. 3 Rebels last year when it pulled out a 10-7 win. The betting trends are pretty even for both sides in this matchup, as the Tigers are 9-0 ATS on the road after being outrushed by 125+ yards in its previous game since 1992, but also 0-7 ATS on the road following a home game since 2013.

Ole Miss is 18-9 ATS at home under head coach Hugh Freeze, but favorites of 3.5 to 10 points with a winning record coming off an extremely close conference loss (3 points or less) are just 20-50 ATS when facing another winning team since 1992.

Although the Rebels are more well-rested coming off a bye week, they have a longer injury list with LB Denzel Nkemdiche (undisclosed) doubtful and four others defensive players questionable in DE Fadol Brown (foot), DT Herbert Moore (knee), LB Tayler Polk (undisclosed) and CB Kalio Moore (undisclosed). For the Tigers, only TE DeSean Smith (undisclosed) is doubtful while OL Jerald Hawkins (ankle) has been upgraded to probable.

LSU has posted strong offensive numbers of 33.6 PPG on 420 total YPG (6.7 yards per play) this season. The offense is much more reliant on the ground game with 42 rushing attempts per contest (254 YPG, 6.0 YPC) and only 20 passing attempts per game (166 YPG, 8.1 YPA).

Superstar RB Leonard Fournette (FBS-high 1,643 rush yds, 17 TD) was near the top of everybody's Heisman list after rushing for at least 150 yards in each of the first seven games, but he has been limited to a meager 61 rushing YPG on 3.2 YPC over the past two defeats. Fournette did run well against Ole Miss last year though with 113 yards on 23 carries (4.9 YPC).

If he can't gain yards against a talented Rebels front seven, sophomore QB Brandon Harris may have to throw 35 times like he did last week when he completed 21 passes for 271 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT.

The Tigers have a very talented defense that allows only 24.3 PPG and 343 total YPG (5.2 yards per play). But because the run-stop unit has surrendered 549 rushing yards and 6 TD over the past two games, the season numbers have jumped to 134 YPG allowed on 4.1 YPC. The passing defense has been decent with 209 YPG allowed on 6.3 YPA, but the entire unit must be ready for a challenge after the Rebels racked up 52 points and 590 total yards in its last game.

Ole Miss scores a hefty 40.7 PPG on 527 total YPG this season, and those numbers are even beefier at home (50.5 PPG, 578 total YPG). This offense doesn't like to huddle up, and the fast pace has led to a subpar 26:15 average time of possession. The Rebels are known more for their passing game, but have an evenly balanced offensive attack with 178 rushing YPG (5.0 YPC) and 349 passing YPG (8.9 YPA).

Over the past three weeks, they have averaged more than 203 rushing YPG. The passing game continues to thrive with QB Chad Kelly (3,224 pass yds, 8.9 YPA, 23 TD, 12 INT) frequently targeting top WR Laquon Treadwell (68 rec, 1,002 yds, 7 TD). The junior pass catcher has gone over 100 receiving yards in five straight weeks, scoring at least one touchdown in every one of those games.

Ole Miss has a wealth of talent on the defensive side of the ball, and that has translated to opponents scoring only 23.0 PPG on 374 total YPG, including a mere 16.5 PPG in Oxford. Opposing rushers are gaining 126 YPG on a paltry 3.2 YPC while opposing quarterbacks are having more success with a 60% completion rate, 248 passing YPG and 6.3 YPA. Turnovers have not come very easily in the past seven games with just seven total takeaways in this span.

Title hopes on line for some, rivalries on tap for others
November 21, 2015

For many, it's all about the playoffs. Who's in? Who's out? Will a Big 12 team make it? What's up with Michigan State-Ohio State.

Well, when it comes to some of college football's most cherished rivalries, let's take a national title break. There are a few games Saturday offering something else: braggin' rights - and trophies!

So while Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State and Notre Dame try to maintain their spots in the College Football Playoff ranking, here's a look at some other worthwhile matchups - from The Game (Harvard-Yale, NBCSN, 2:30 p.m.) to the Big Game (California-Stanford, ESPN, 10:30 p.m.) to the Most Played Rivalry (Lafayette-Lehigh, Lafayette Sports Network, 12:30 p.m.):

---

THE GAME

It's the 132nd meeting between Harvard and Yale, and this one has Ivy League title implications. A win by Harvard (8-1, 5-1) clinches a tie for the league title, with Dartmouth and Penn also needing wins to claim a share of the crown. Harvard is looking for a school record-setting third Ivy title in a row despite a loss last week to Penn.

The most famous game in the series that started in 1875 came in 1968. Both teams were undefeated. Yale led by 16 points, but Harvard staged a miraculous rally and scored 16 points in the final 42 seconds - a touchdown and 2-point conversion with no time remaining left the final score 29-29. The Harvard school newspaper headline the next day read: ''Harvard beats Yale, 29-29.''

The Crimson is led by quarterback Scott Hosch, who is 149 yards shy of breaking the school record for yards passing; Yale (6-3, 3-3) is led by Morgan Roberts, who has thrown for 2,203 yards. Harvard completed an undefeated season last year with a 31-24 win over Yale, scoring on a 35-yard TD pass with 55 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

''If we were 0-9 this would be an important game,'' Harvard coach Tim Murphy said.

---

THE BIG GAME

Unlike Harvard-Yale, this one is on the national radar even though No. 15 Stanford (8-2, 7-1 Pac-12, No. 11 CFP) is unlikely to make the final four with a win over Cal (6-4, 3-4). The Cardinal can clinch the Pac-12 North with a win, while the Golden Bears haven't won since 2009. The winner of the 118th Cal-Stanford game is awarded the Axe.

In a season already filled with unimaginable last-play miracles, there is no play more incredible than ''The Play'' in the 1982 Big Game. With Stanford, quarterbacked by John Elway, up 20-19, Cal fielded the kickoff with 4 seconds left. Five laterals later - and with Kevin Moen running through Stanford band members who made their way onto the field believing the game was over, the Golden Bears won 25-20.

This one features two of the league's top QBs in Jeff Goff (3,324 yards and 30 TDs) and Kevin Hogan (a 162.1 quarterback rating).

''We have a lot of older guys who want to beat Cal and keep the Axe and a bunch of guys who want to go to the Pac-12 championship game,'' Stanford coach David Shaw said. ''That's where our focus is.''

---

MOST-PLAYED RIVALRY

For the 151st time, it's Lafayette-Lehigh, with the visiting Leopards (1-9, 0-5 Patriot League) looking for a third straight win over the Engineers (5-5, 3-2). The series began in 1884, but is the most played because the teams met twice a year from 1884-1901 - and three times in 1891.

Last year's game was memorable - it was played at Yankee Stadium, and Lafayette won 27-7. Third-string QB Zach Zweizig was the hero. He started his first game in over a year after a series of concussions and threw a TD pass with 2:37 left to seal the win in what is considered among the top moments in ''The Rivalry.''

---

AND LET'S NOT FORGET ...

... Cats-Griz for the Great Divide Trophy and Duel in the Desert for the Territorial Cup

First, it's Montana (6-4, 5-2 Big Sky) at Montana State (5-5, 3-4), with the winner claiming the Great Divide Trophy (created in 2001). Many times the game has had conference title implications - and sometimes a national title - but no matter what, the winner at least gets to boast for a year.

The rivalry began in 1897 and at one point Montana won 16 in a row, beginning in 1986. Since the teams joined the Big Sky in 1963, Montana leads the series 29-22.

Most memorable game? Maybe 1968, when Montana State quarterback Dennis Erickson rallied the Bobcats from a 15-point, fourth quarter deficit to a 29-24 win, capped by Paul Schafer's dive into the end zone with 12 seconds left.

The Duel in the Desert matches Arizona (6-5, 3-5 Pac-12) at Arizona St. (5-5, 3-4), on FS1 at 3:30 p.m. The rivalry is not among the oldest (started in 1899) but the NCAA says the trophy - the Territorial Cup - is.

Last year, a Pac-12 title game berth was on the line. Not so Saturday. The Sun Devils need a win to become bowl eligible. The Wildcats are coming off an upset of Utah.
